"Her" might actually be the most "bts styled" album bts has ever released

one of the major criticisms i've seen from armys about Her is that the album "doesn't sound like them". but in all honestly, this is a fallacy on various levels. bts has taken their style and refined it. they've drawn influences from styles and genres they've always wanted to peruse, chiseled away the rough edges that were still present in wings, and have taken the next step into  their defining sound. they have matured their defining sound.

at first listen the album sounds quite experimental. but if you really think about it, bts has not only always been experimental, but they've also always been inspired by the things that the tracks on Her where inspired by. various genres of hip hop, r&b, and even the electronic stuff which they did during i need u and young forever. none of what is on this album is 100% new to them.

Outro: Her is very HYYH reminiscent, similar to songs like Whalien 52 and Move

Mic Drop is a bit Dark & Wild era - esque, similar to their 3rd Cypher in the sense of the period of  hip hop the beats are inspired by

Go Go reminds me of Skool Luv affair era with Spine Breaker

Best of Me is similar to the Young Forever original Save Me in terms of stylistic electronic influences

And Serendipity honestly sounds like something that would have fit right in with the other solos on Wings

opinions? really interested to hear other bts fan opinions on this. and any opinions on the album in general.

bts albums from skool luv affair to now has been bop after another.

her i think is the most differentiated if it comes to genre styles. i loved DNA and the album from the first listen. bts just released another amazing comeback no complaints

BTS always experiments and those who say this is ain't their style ,they know shit

Each album is different form the other. Since when BTS keeps the same style?

They themselves state that they always learn and want to try new genres.

And this time HER is superior, full of bops, different genres

The best example is that many of us pick a fave song according to our own taste. The album is versatile and fantastic

Agreed.

The "it's not them" argument is largely nonsensical. Especially about the title track. Going through the eras there were quite substantial differences in how the titles tracks sounded, i.e. what genre overlays/undertones they had alongside the ever present pop. And it has always followed with the current trends (especially on the international scene since 2015), with a bit of touch of their own ofc.

I thought that was one of the main reasons why we loved BTS. The exploration, reinventing.

What went downhill with this album to receive such reactions is still beyond me... cuz while I respect differing tastes, it is the arguments I've seen that simply do not hold water.

Her is a great album and I loved it instantly. I think some people expected HYYH 3.0, but bts never sticks with one genre and they always do something new without losing their signature sound. People just have to listen to the album a bit more and get used to it.
I'm sure after a week no one will complain anymore and start to love the album.

Agree. It actually meets my expectation. Especially bcs I don't like WINGS, bcs ... I can say, their most experimental album (?), that is why I'm longing for some classic style BTS, at least the HYYH pt.1 style.

I'm gonna put this statement below on spoiler, bcs some of yall might thought I dragged this group, but, no. It's just another example of a similar case

last year, EXO released Ex'act, which is... the "weird" one compared to their other albums/EP. And I don't like it (But, sure, Lucky One are good). I'm longing for some classic EXO twist, and what happened this year? EXO released The War, which sounds alike their previous album. And I like it!

I think when people say "it's not BTS style", perhaps they mean the 'over- generic' sound this album has.

For me, I disliked most songs at first listen. After multiple listenings, Go, go, go, Mic drop and last but the best, Pied piper has BTS 'unique' sound it.

It took me 20 secs to fall for these as they began. That's what BTS' music is for me.

For rest of the songs, Best of me is too generic for my taste ( just like any other CS song), Illegal is too cheesy and Outro is too slow.

And, they just messed up beat drop part at DNA.

Conclusively, this album was 'heavily' influenced by Western music and kinda lost BTS touch at places.

I generally agree with you. From the lyrical topics and tones, to the genres and stylistic elements of the songs -- some of it we've seen from BTS before (classic BTS), and some of it is new (turning point BTS). There's usually a little something new incorporated into their musical identity every comeback, I'd say.

Whoever is saying this album "doesn't sound like BTS" makes me think they don't actually listen to BTS -- both their songs and the words they say. I've also heard this comment nearly every era since INU lol.

If you don't like a song, it's not hard to just say that and leave it at that. No need to make it into something bigger than it is just to rationalize it. ohla.png

note: please attribute everything to my personal pref being really obnoxious and picky (I don't like most k-pop releases), I'm not tryna drag, I just really like HYYH and have HYYH-colored lenses on and Her just doesn't quite make it

I don't agree (as in I absolutely, completely find myself preferring the HYYH era to Her's, I actually agree that they've maintained their BTS "sound") but I can see where you're coming from

Outro: Her is my favorite song on the album and imo it's more comparable (despite using very similar notes to Whalien) to Rain than Whalien just because it reshuffles into a more classic hip hop style

Mic Drop is very D&W era but in general I find myself averse to trap so I can't bring myself to enjoy it

Young Forever is my favorite BTS song and Best of Me merely being electronic doesn't match up, I really don't like tropical house instrumentals being blended anthemically

Go Go's instrumentals try a little too hard to find a unique flavor and loses itself that way imo

I don't like Serendipity at all because I feel like it fails to hold onto a powerful melody (also it doesn't help that I dislike slow bpms and R&B-esque sounds and beats that don't fully commit, and R&B-esque sounds in general)

I actually really like the DNA riff, though, and Pied Piper is actually really amazing too

I respect BTS for that exact reason that they are so versatile, love experimenting and don't cling to one sound

It is more interesting to stan them, cause you never know what they deliver to you

For me tho, they always make me love their music no matter genre ...

it's just generic, underwhelming and bts has done better; but i understand why some people love their album

but what about it is generic? DNA and Best of Me are probably the most generic for obvious reasons, but stuff like their outro, mic drop, and i'd even go as far as to say dimple, are things that you  do not typically hear in mainstream today. and imo are unique attempts at the inspired genres.

but i can respect the opinion that bts has better albums.
