Popularity peaks of popular girl groups.

this thread mainly focuses on digital sales to measure how long the group maintained their peak popularity.Since digitals are what indicates a groups popularity with the Korean public and they fluctuate a lot according to the publics interest while Physical sales are mostly constant. Also, a group's physical sales may increase in a year but digitals may drop a lot something like gfriend, so you wouldn't call 2017 gfriend's peak year even with good physical sales.

Anyway, this is what I think:-

Wondergirls :- 2007,2008

SNSD:- 2009,2010,2011

2ne1:- 2009,2010,2011

f(x):- 2011,2012

4minute:-2009,2010

T-ara:-  2011

Kara:-2009,2010,2011

Miss A:- 2010,2011

Sistar :- 2012,2013,2014

Girl's day:- 2014

Apink:- 2014

Exid:- 2015

AOA:- 2015

Mamamoo:- 2016,2017

Twice:- 2016,2017

Red velvet:- 2017

Gfriend:- 2016

Notes:-

1.Blackpink isn't included because I don't think they have reached their peak yet.

2.This is specifically about the time period when the group was a huge trend in S.K. for example 2011 for sistar is not included even when it's the year they released their best selling song or 2013 for apink, 2015 for gfriend etc.

3. I don't know if 2016 should be included for Mamamoo because it's only this year I started feeling their popularity, but they had a huge boost in popularity towards the end of the year so I don't know.

4.For Twice, Mamamoo and RV, their peak hasn't ended.I don't know Kara, T-ara, F(x)'s peak years so feel free to tell me.

Also, this is just a personal opinion and you are free to have your own criteria. There can be multiple ways to measure a groups impact, this is just my way of doing it.

I think for SNSD you should also put 2012. They may not have released anything that year, but Twinkle was one of the biggest hits that year, they were number two on both Gallup and Forbes behind PSY for the entire year, and all nine members ranked within the top 14 of most popular idols at the end of the year, despite not having a comeback.

Regarding Kara and T-ara:

Kara: 2009-2011

T-ara: 2011-2012 (half)

Apink should also have 2013 imo, they sold over 50k of one album and had the most streamed song of the year smile.png

2016 should definitely be included for Mamamoo. You're The Best scored a PAK on the charts despite DOTS OSTs ruling the Melon at the time, and they won 8 music shows with that song, with competition from Big 3 Acts.

And Decalcomanie was released later that year in November. It finally left the Melon top 100 last month. What a run.

UOAY in 2015 is what really catapulted Mamamoo (along with a host of other factors I won't get into) in the eyes of the public, but 2016 is when they solidified as a top girl group.

SNSD's peak was 2011 - 2013

and i don't think RV's peak is now yet

They had gee, genie,oh,rdr, the boys during 2009-2011.While they didn't release anything in 2012 and there were multiple acts that did better digitally than IGAB.

Also about RV,I think their sales have become more front loaded,I honestly think their peak has started.

were they big during 2009 and 2010?

Don't do this unsure.png

Yes, that's their peak. fresh from their hits roly poly and then lovey dovey. if i remember it right, 2011 is also the year jiyeon was the most beautiful idol (above yoona and suzy) in some poll.

People thought SNSD had peaked in 2010, then 2011 happened, then people were like "they're over" and then IGAB happened - four years later they're still the best selling girl group.

ok and? overall yes they're the best selling girl group but they are clearly past their peak.  you aren't understanding the concept of a "peak"

I almost want to bring in some sports terminology to distinguish what sports fans refer to as a player's prime vs. a player's absolute peak.

Typically we measure primes in years and isolate peaks to one year.

For instance, Michael Jordan's prime was roughly from 87-93, but you could make the argument his peak year was 1991.

You can do the same with K-Pop groups, because I don't think Twice, RV or Mamamoo have peaked yet, but they're definitely still in their primes.
