I will tell you the number one trick of being a better conversationalist - asking questions and then actually listening to the answers.

 

Also ask open ended questions not Yes or No questions - but questions that will keep them talking for a while.

 

Trust me, people will get bored if one person is constantly talking and not listening.

You listen and answer back.

 

Conversation is a transaction of questions and replies.

 

The more value or meaning you put behind a question or reply the better reply or question you'll get in return.

Listen to what others are saying first.

Keep your words clear and try to use emphasis and other highlights while making a point or telling a story.

Try not to take large pauses and do try to add to a running topic( or atleast something within the same category) and not diverge from it, unless the subject starts to become stale.

The only way to understand the flow of a conversation is to practice it. As a group becomes larger in size the more difficult it becomes to gauge the response and also to pique others interest.

Practice speaking. Start by greeting them or complimenting people sincerely.

 

Listen. Not only to the words spoken but also to their body language.

 

And just be nice. Don't be nervous. Just be yourself. Smile
