So, what are we all watching this week?

  • Mad Dog: The plot may have been simple in the sense that they were just chasing one case for the entire length of the show, but this drama hit every single emotional beat that I wanted. The team came together like a real family (plus romances, yay!), and I finally got to hear Woo Do-hwan call Yoo Ji-tae “hyung.†It took 16 episodes to hear that one damn word, but when he said it, it was perfect.

  • Mad Dog: Episode 15MadDog15-00797-copy.jpg

The tension doesn’t let up as Mad Dog scrambles to bring those responsible for the tragedy of Flight 801 to justice. Their investigation suffers one setback after another, but help from an unexpected source gives the team hope. Until the truth can be revealed, the ever vigilant Kang-woo has his hands full making sure that his team stays safe.

EPISODE 15: “There is no subjectâ€

The episode begins with a flashback to Hyun-gi’s meeting with Chairman Cha in the hospital. Hyun-gi offered a deal—if Chairman Cha accepted the blame for Hong-joo’s actions, he would hold a press conference to call for a new investigation into the crash of Flight 801.

Hyun-gi explained that he wanted the public to see him as a prosecutor rather than a suspect. When Chairman Cha realized that Hyun-gi planned to influence the investigation, he admitted that it was the best way to alter evidence and successfully shift blame to President Joo and Chairman Cha.

An anxious woman is among the throng of reporters outside of Taeyang Insurance when Hong-joo makes an appearance in the lobby. Surrounded by cameras, the woman shoves a photo of her son, who was a victim of Flight 801, into Hong-joo’s hand and begs her to tell the truth. Hong-joo just drops the photo and retreats, looking numb and terrified.

Hyun-gi reads about Hong-joo’s confrontation as Chief Prosecutor Ohn proposes a friend of his to head the reinvestigation committee. Hyun-gi wants a drawn out investigation to turn the public’s opinion in his favor but Chief Prosecutor Ohn urges him to resolve the investigation quickly.

Hyun-gi uses the online report about Hong-hoo to argue the need to overcome the negative press. Hyun-gi figures that the longer the investigation drags on, people will grow tired of hearing about it and the public’s sympathy will shift.

===

Hyun-gi predicts that if he insists, “Let’s investigate the truth until the end,†eventually the public will think, “‘Stop it already… How much more should they pay out? Poor JH Group!’†Only when that happens will Hyun-gi close the investigation.

But Chief Prosecutor Ohn informs Hyun-gi about the illegal recording that Kang-woo made of their conversation in Noo-ri’s hospital room. Chief Prosecutor Ohn warns that if it’s released, all of them are finished.

MadDog15-00180-copy.jpg MadDog15-00181-copy.jpg

At Mad Dog, the team watches a news report that Chairman Cha confessed to the coverup of Flight 801. Min-joon realizes that Chairman Cha sacrificed both himself and President Joo to save Hong-joo.

Ha-ri and Kang-woo guess that Hyun-gi was behind Chairman Cha’s confession but Noo-ri reminds the team that his father must be involved as well. Noo-ri proposes, “Let’s get them and make them pay. People who committed a crime must be punished.â€

Soon-jung runs in with news that a swarm of reporters is outside. The team glances out the window as Soon-jung guesses that they want to interview Min-joon, but when Min-joon tries to get a peek, Ha-ri pushes him away. He asks if he’s being protected right now.

Min-joon surprises everyone when he suggests that an interview would be the perfect platform to release the recording of Hyun-gi’s conversation with Chief Prosecutor Ohn. Suddenly, there’s a commotion on the street as Hyun-gi enjoys the reporters’ attention on his way to personally apologize to Min-joon.

MadDog15-00255-copy.jpg

Inside, the team surrounds Hyun-gi, who notes, “You’re staring at me as if I killed someone.†Kang-woo lunges at him but Min-joon grabs Hyun-gi first. While Secretary Han records video of the confrontation, Hyun-gi apologizes to Min-joon and promises, “Through a thorough reinvestigation, I will clear your brother’s name.â€

Secretary Han continues to record as Min-joon reverts to German and promises, “You jerk. I’m going to kill you.†Min-joon doesn’t release Hyun-gi until Kang-woo shouts at him to let go. Satisfied, Hyun-gi compliments Secretary Han’s efforts and dismisses him.

COMMENTS

Kang-woo just locked himself in with a very determined, experienced murderer and all I can think is that this would be the perfect time to make use of that secret room. If only there had been time to sneak some backup in there. I’d be more worried about Kang-woo’s chances in a face to face confrontation with Lawyer Lee, but he’s nicknamed Mad Dog for a good reason. My money is on Kang-woo.

There were some very heartfelt sentiments peppered throughout the episode that made it more touching than I expected at this point in the drama. Soon-jung’s conversation with the jailed Nurse Oh had me wondering how his warm heart didn’t manage to melt those bars away. When I imagined pillow talk, I expected something between Ha-ri and Min-joon so it was hilarious that the two characters who shared a bed were Min-joon and Noo-ri. And Kang-woo’s scene with Manager Park was unexpectedly moving too. When Manager Park assured Kang-woo that he was still a good husband and father, my heart just shattered. Such unexpected emotions for a suspenseful drama, but it just made me love the characters even more.

MadDog15-01116-copy.jpg

Even Ha-ri and Min-joon had their moment, but that was a frustrating almost-kiss if ever there was one. It makes sense when I think about Min-joon’s inexperience with close relationships—he kept Beom-joon at arm’s length too. What Min-joon needs is time to learn how to trust people and I appreciate that the drama didn’t ignore that and accelerate the relationship with Ha-ri.

Once his brother’s name is cleared, Min-joon may feel more comfortable about pursuing Ha-ri, but for now Noo-ri is right, Min-joon is terrible boyfriend material. He’s the brother of a murderer, a con-man, a flirt. Ha-ri isn’t just a casual flirtation, and Min-joon cares about her way more than that. For her part, Ha-ri has been amazingly understanding and my hope is that we’re rewarded with the promise of a real connection between her and Min-joon before we say goodbye.

As heartwarming as the episode was, the Mad Dog team still has to deal with some very serious threats. Not only is the team in danger, but so is everyone who’s ever helped them. No one can relax for a second as they look over their shoulders for the next threat. What Mad Dog has going for them is that they have each other’s backs, while the bad guys continue to stab each other in the back. Because if their enemies actually worked together like them, the Mad Dog team might not have a chance at success. But that’s their biggest strength, and before I say goodbye to the Mad Dog family, I want to see them use their teamwork to successfully reveal the truth about Flight 801 to the world.

  • Mad Dog: Episode 16 (Final)

    MadDog16-00809.jpg

It’s finally time to try to drag down the people truly responsible for the Flight 801 crash, but can Mad Dog ensnare everyone involved or will some of them manage to escape our team’s carefully laid trap with some smooth maneuvers of their own?

EPISODE 16: “Dr. Kim, inâ€

MadDog16-00008.jpg

Lawyer Lee sneaks into Min-joon’s empty apartment and waits in ambush. Downstairs, Kang-woo catches up to Min-joon and urges him to join the rest of the team for a meal instead of going back to change clothes.

Kang-woo checks the security footage and sees Lawyer Lee enter the apartment upstairs. Kang-woo heads straight in and bolts the door behind him. He draws Lawyer Lee out from the shadows and says he’s now trapped inside with him.

Lawyer Lee laughs and says casually that he was only there to meet Min-joon, but Kang-woo notes both the scarf and knife in Lawyer Lee’s hands and surmises that the real reason he came was to kill Min-joon.

MadDog16-00100.jpg MadDog16-00091.jpg

Kang-woo challenges Lawyer Lee to take him on instead of Min-joon, since Kang-woo is a more equal match for Lawyer Lee’s strength. Lawyer Lee wildly slashes the knife at Kang-woo as the two clash in the apartment, and eventually Lawyer Lee catches Kang-woo with a swipe to the arm.

At the restaurant, Min-joon wonders why Kang-woo still hasn’t joined them when it was his idea to get a meal together. Back in the apartment, Kang-woo and Lawyer Lee battle to gain the upper hand on each other, and eventually Lawyer Lee manages to overpower Kang-woo by choking him with the scarf.

Meanwhile, Ha-ri tries to get a hold of Kang-woo but he won’t answer. Min-joon realizes Kang-woo is up to something and rushes back to find him, with Ha-ri and Noo-ri quickly in tow.

MadDog16-00178.jpg

Kang-woo manages to get out of the chokehold and quickly turns the tables on Lawyer Lee, turning his own scarf against him and choking him instead.

Min-joon and company find the security footage of Lawyer Lee entering Min-joon’s apartment and dash upstairs to intervene, but can’t get past the bolted door.

Inside, Kang-woo throttles Lawyer Lee and asks why they’re after Min-joon all of a sudden, when he himself was the original target. Lawyer Lee refuses to answer, instead urging Kang-woo to just kill him.

MadDog16-00221.jpg

Will Kang-woo end up a killer?

Min-joon and gang yell through the blocked door to see if Kang-woo is okay, and Lawyer Lee promises that he’ll kill every one of them if he gets the chance. His words enrage Kang-woo, who tightens his grip on Lawyer Lee’s neck.

Min-joon notices Kang-woo’s reflection in the window and screams, “Stop! Don’t do it! You can’t become a murderer!†At his words, Kang-woo finally comes to his senses and lets go right as Lawyer Lee loses consciousness.

Noo-ri finally breaks the chain and the team rushes in to find Lawyer Lee lying motionless on the floor. Ha-ri frantically calls an ambulance as Kang-woo staggers away looking stunned.

COMMENTS

Yay, they’re all working together as a team now! And even Nurse Oh and Professor Byeon are getting involved more! It’s a happy note to leave the series on, and I can only imagine how well their schemes will work now that they’re all on the same page and willing to trust in each other. Their final plot to corner Hyun-gi went about as smoothly as anyone could have hoped for, and though I unabashedly love Hyun-gi as a character, his comeuppance was satisfying to watch in the end.

I’m a little bit disappointed at how muted the whole affair was, though. Mad Dog spent all of this time setting up their elaborate trap and the end result was a simple switching of the press conference materials to incriminate Hong-joo and Hyun-gi. It really lacked the panache I was expecting, and diminished the payoff slightly that there wasn’t some big, unknown twist that changed everything. We already knew Hyun-gi’s secretary was collaborating with Mad Dog, so there was no real surprise when he became the key to ruining Hyun-gi.

It’s just a shame that the solution was so simple. When you consider how much the main conflict revolved around each party reading the other side’s moves correctly and plotting around them, Hyun-gi falling because he trusted one person is a disappointment. He was so on top of everything throughout the series and even read Mad Dog’s final plan for the most part, but failed to account for one variable and it brought everything crashing down.

MadDog16-00251.jpg

Still, Mad Dog was a decently fun ride along the way thanks to its smartly written villains, who all felt like they were reasonable opponents for Kang-woo and company to match wits with. Their motives are maybe a bit too nebulous if you look too closely at them (I still have no real sense of what Taeyang stood to gain from taking such an active role in the conspiracy), but if you don’t squint too hard it’s not glaring enough to be a massive hindrance to your enjoyment.

For me, Mad Dog’s core competency is the relationships of the team members themselves. There were a ton of cute moments throughout, not only from Min-joon and Ha-ri’s budding romance, but also neat little touches like Soon-jung and Noo-ri’s extremely close bond, or Kang-woo and Min-joon’s escalating competition to selflessly sacrifice themselves more than the other person. Plus they packed in enough detail with the characters on the periphery like Nurse Oh and Manager Park that it felt like there was an abundance of warmth around everyone on the team.

So now that Min-joon successfully absolved his brother and helped Kang-woo get justice for his family, I’m glad they all stuck together and even kept working with their leader in prison for a year. It shows, really, how much Min-joon grew over the course of the series, that he went from grouchy con man who refuses to trust anyone to a fully integrated team member in the end. His heartwarming referral to Kang-woo as “hyung†left me sharing the same dopey smile the rest of the team expressed when they heard it. It goes to show that even with all the corruption out there in the world, you can find hope in the support of a solid group of friends who will back you through thick and thin.
