Has anyone taken online classes in college/uni?

I don't know how to phrase it correctly so just bare with me, is there a format that these online courses follow?

Reason why I am asking is because I am taking 2 online courses this semester. For one of them the professor just decided to post a bunch of assignments and there's no lessons, no lectures, no nothing. You're basically on your own reading the damn textbook and countless supplemental articles for that specific chapter and I'm like WTF? So what's the point of that? Why am I paying for something when nothing is being taught to me.

The class is a psych class and the professor basically gave us like 4 different multi-part assignments that we have like 3-4 weeks to complete. She's not doing any powerpoint lectures, nothing. She's expecting the students to follow the syllabus, read what's assigned for those weeks and complete the tasks that she has given out, oh and the best part is the she is only available once a week to answer emails, so if you email her on the wrong day she won't even reply to you.

Is that a common thing with online courses? You're basically self teaching yourself.

I did take 3 classes and no it shouldn't be that way, there has to be something that the teacher has to do in order to ask for an assignment like a lecture, video, anything that will help with the assignment, i think you should report the teacher because no matter what there has to be always a backup material to help you with anything with the class, thats a reason you are paying for this.

so i think you have to report the teacher.. yeah sometimes you have to learn thing by yourself but there has to be always some material coming form the teacher

online classes are good if you don't have time to attend classes or the course is easy (requires little effort). Yes that sounds normal to me bc I've taken some online classes before. Didn't she give you a syllabus? just follow that and it should be all good. It's really not that bad if you manage your time lol

I took Calc 2 and 3 online but the professor provided notes and had recorded lectures for us to watch for every chapter. And she was always available for questions. That's pretty messed up that your prof will only answer questions once a week, especially when it's just through email and they don't need to be in at their designated office hours anyways.

I do think a lot of what's done in online classes is self-taught but your cases sound extreme.

yes, my Korean courses are online because our Korean teacher would rather have it online than on campus. I've also taken some other courses online like Statistics.

And how online classes are run depends on the professor. In my Korean class for example we have weekly online meetings where our teacher will go over newly introduced grammar concepts for the week.

Also, with online courses you are essentially on your own for the most part as your professor will not be there in person to hold your hand throughout the learning process. It's why online courses aren't for everyone and why my college has a "is an online course right for you" page that lists the difference between taking a course online vs on campus.

I did some online college courses back in high school, in mine there were due dates set up but for the most part you had to take charge and take care of your own schedule. As long as you don't allow yourself to slack off, you should be fine.

no, if i'm able to physically be in a classroom, i'll do it.

online classes are a scam.

off topic but your sig is so adorable ahmagahplz.png chuplz.png

I've taken a lot of online classes. But, the professor usually provided some kind of reading material to go along with the textbook/assignments. Your classes don't sound that bad though. Online courses do require a lot more work on the student's part. You're expected to understand all the material and seek help when you don't.

My french online class was basically you read a bunch of articles, chapters and check some video files then do the exercise related to it. When it's corrected, you can do the next one. So if you wanted, you could finish in like in 2-3 week if you were lucky and also have a lot of free time for it.

Like any uni class it really depends on the professor. I took an online class similar to what you described where we were given a textbook and a syllabus of topics and assignments but no real lecture material or guidance from the instructor (who was a TA so that may be why). I've also taken an online class where there are recorded podcast but no notes or assignments, we just had to video call in during exams.

My advice is to first question if you really need the class. If not, it isnt worth keeping, drop it. Or if you need it, find the same class with a physical lecture, switch. If none of the above, i really feel for you but you'll have to find a way to buckle down and get by (unis usually have free tutoring help). When instructor evaluations come around really be honest about your grievances, usually the administration will review really harsh evals.

Online courses are such a toss up when it comes to quality. I've taken ones that are like that, just a dump of information you have to handle yourself. I've had others that have online lectures you can attend and ask questions at the end, and some have been a 50/50 split between online and in class.

I'm terrible with online courses. If I can, I'll take a version of that course that's in class. I never absorb material presented to me in online courses and sometimes I'll straight up forget the course even exists.

She will only reply to emails sent out on Tuesdays before 6PM. If you send her an email later on Tuesday or on any other day she will ignore it.

The class is an abnormal psychology class, there's no exams or quizzes. As I said she gave us 4 assignments that have different subsections and that's what makes up the class. She provided us with different case studies of individuals with different mental disorders and our job is to basically identify the disorder, give examples of how the person with said disorder acts based on the case study, treatment plan and prognosis.

What annoys me is the fact that how you as someone with phd is going to teach a class without any interaction with students? She basically dumped a bunch of material online for us to download, told us to reach specific chapters of the textbook and do the coursework.

Oh and the best part is that she told us to buy the textbook that she co-wrote and that was released 3 months ago.
