Things people do that baristas hate

Before I started my grownup job (like two weeks ago) I was a barista and these were things that my coworkers and I hated. So when I say baristas, I basically mean myself and my old coworkers.

1. Ordering drinks that are not on the menu. Seriously though, every coffee shop is not the same and doesn't speak (insert coffee shops name here) nonsense language.

2. Not specify if you want your drink iced, hot, or blended. If you don't say I would just assume you want it hot.
3. Not specify what kind of chocolate you want in your mocha. If you don't specify I'm just going to assume milk.

4. Not specify if you want a special milk (almond, soy, skim, etc.). If you don't specify I'm just going to assume you want 2%.

5. Generally just act like you've never ordered a drink before or ordered food.

6. Drink half a frappe then try return it for a refund 25 minutes later because it was, "Diabetes sweet." Well, yeah. It's basically a coffee milkshake.

7. Talk on the phone while you're ordering. This one is seriously annoying, I couldn't tell if people were talking to me or the person on the phone when they did this. Just stop talking for a minute and tell your barista what you want.

8. So this is one that I really hated is when people would try and give me their trash. People would do this at the drive thru and when I would hand people their drinks at the end of the bar they'd try to hand their straw trash to me.

I'm sure there are more things that annoyed me, but these are the ones I could think of. If you're a barista let me know the things that customers do that annoy you!

I am not a barista but i know that baristas hate it when people

- Ordering an iced cappuccino

- Ordering a macchiato, get their order but then complain that it is not what they want because apparently what they actually want is "starbucks macchiato"

is being a barista a recommended first job

So, it wasn't my first job so I'm not sure how much I can comment on this. You have to be able to deal with people really well and deal with difficult people well. I think almost all the people at my store had worked some other kind of job before.

I do think that being a barista is a really good job for students (college not high school-most of the coffeeshops where I live try not to hire high schoolers because it's harder to work with their schedules). It can work around class schedules (if you have afternoon classes , you can open-if you have morning classes you can close) and at least where I worked we got free one free drink per shift (but we usually would have like 2, our manager super didn't care if we ate or drank for free).
