A possible new war?

So with all the recent tensions arising between Russia, Ukraine and Western countries do you think the possibility of a new war or a new cold war is likely?

 

I personally used to think that with the globalization which increased interdependences, institutions like the G8, G20, UNO, major tensions like that wouldn't happen between northern countries again but with the way things are going i can't help be worry though i think a war is a bit too much regarding the actual situation.

I see Russia taking land from Ukraine but I don't see the West getting involved. And if they do, I see backlash against Western governments by their own citizens since we don't want more wars about shit that doesn't involve us / we don't care about.

However if my government (UK) throws us into another war their will be uproar, it took years for people to quiet down about America dragging us into the middle eastern war but dragging us into a war with Russia? Gosh there will be a civil war in Britain if that happens!

I mean its not a bad thing if it doesn't effect you (ignorance is bliss)....but somebody with the ability to surf the web should take the time to read the news every now or so

Well People went to war on less.... I do believe with the increased tensions russia and ukraine will go to war. The U.S. won't go and help ukraine because there is nothing in it for us. We wouldn't gain anything from going to war against russia. I do see a possibility of WW3 if putin continues taking over neighboring countries. Things are gonna get messy tbh

I don't see it happening unless Russia do something similar soon. There was a lot of tension when they invaded Georgia too, but after a while it eased.

it sounds like the West is trying to avoid any kinds of war whatsoever. Hence why they are imposing sanctions, kicking Russia out of the G8 and waging their fingers at Russia.

 

I don't think we need to worry about a war unless Russia goes in and starts invading other countries

A war over the Crimea? Anything is possible, but I seriously doubt it.

 

What may lead to war is if another region of an ex-Soviet satellite state bordering Russia is 'inspired' to do likewise and seek to secede so as to join Motherland Russia.

 

Even if the region in question has an overwhelmingly large ethnic russian population (like in the Crimea), any attempt to secede will not go smoothly unless there is already a Russian military contingent in its midst (like in the Crimea). The opposition to such a move is likely to be more intense, both within and outside of the country. And if the country is close to the EU (e.g. Latvia), the West may find itself unable to stand aside and do nothing.
