[Important Reminder] Bilboard will not count purchases of over 5 albums, bulk-buying is pointless

Was talking to some fellow K-Pop fans/lurking ARMYs here on OH who don't really visit the long BTS threads like MT or the Sales one so just in case there are some of those like them who are planning to purchase Love Yourself: Her on Amazon, just a very important reminder.

Posting this because I had a RL multifandom friend lurker here on OH who got so excited it would count to the Bilboard chart and was ready to buy one for all herself, her siblings, her mom and her cousins in hopes in adds to the Bilboard charting. Girl you know who you are, you were planning to buy 8 but they just gonna count that as ONE sale.

I hope Hanteo does the same thing tbh.

I don't think it would be that easy with hanteo, since almost every idol company major income are from fansigns bulk buying. Gimmicks are so common in kpop album sales while I believe Billboard is always against it. So, unless there is a big revolution on that culture, I dont see it happening anytime soon.

if they did that in Korea, the whole idol industry would probably crash.

But it's also why the US charts are just way more accurate in terms of what the public actually likes and what songs/albums are genuinely huge instead of just what the most devoted young fandoms are willing to spend the most money on. The often tragic top ten are indeed a reflection of the tragic taste of the GP.

So ARMY can just bulk buy in another site for GAON but buy 5 albums each from amazon.

Tbh knowing this just make me realize how amazing Beyonce and Adele sales are.

Theoretically Beyonce and Adele fans could bulk buy easily since their albums are available in stores and not just Amazon. It wouldn't be hard to buy 5 on amazon then in various different stores that also sell the albums.

No one does that. They'd have to only buy 5 from every store, and there aren't that many stores anymore that actually physically sell cds. And there's no benefit to buying multiples, no fan signs and one version. Adele and Beyoncé really do sell the way the way the chart says.

Well, the physical album market in America (in fact, all over the world except Korea and Japan) is so dead right now. With streaming being the major scorer on Billboard Chart, there is no reason to bulk buy for fans and company of American singers anyways. (edit: but physical sales is important for BTS to compensate for the streaming gap between them and others)

When we talk about the American version of "sajaegi", it's more about buying Youtube views or streams. I recalled a couple of top stars got billions of youtube views removed when Youtube found out the views were fake. (link)

Let's not pretend the American charts are cleaner than korean charts and tbh buying views are cheaper than buying physical albums.

Okay, so say if they brought 20 orders of 5 CDs. Would each order would count as 5 or 1 sell???

Sent from my SM-J320P using OneHallyu mobile app

So far this is not addressed, so no one knows.

I didn't say they did. Just that in theory it's possible to bulk buy that way. And they could very well buy more than 5 from a store. Separate transactions(so only 5 at a time) and in stores you can actually pay in cash and not use a credit/bank card. And many stores do sell CDs usually the big ones like Walmart, Tatget, Best Buy, some shops in malls, etc... Even some book stores. Depending on where you live there are multiples of these stores.

Ok, but why are you even bringing it up if you're not trying to suggest something? In theory, many things are possible. That doesn't mean they are remotely probable.

Adele doesn't really have a fanbase. She just has massive recognition.

No, she has a fanbase. It's just that her demographic appeal lends her a wider reach than Taylor or Beyoncé. Both who are the best album sellers behind her these days. Usually, first week sales in the US are carried by their usual fanbase, the rest on is carried by the public gradually buying the album.

Which is why Taylor went from a 1M debut to 6M, Beyoncé went from 600k to almost 2M, and Adele like 3.4M to 10M.

Not really they can buy 5 abums a time; 10 to 20 times a day.

but they don't. That's why the physical market is dead af. Maybe the music companies will pressure them to allow bulk buying again, cause they don't care if it's actually a million people buying a million albums or if it's just 100k people buying them, but the charts are really strict about these things.

It's a good thing too. Charts/Records shouldn't be about which fandom is the craziest, richest and youngest (cause older fans are a lot less intense, not to mention busier and don't spend all their days streaming and buying).

The people who really sell the most albums in the US are the people who are considered A-list famous and are known to a huge chunk of the public, by name, face and a few songs at least.

I'm pretty sure it's really hard to game the system in America but people have tried, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Tidal. But it's usually on the streaming end. There was a big to do a month ago? About who would get the #1 record, Lana Del Rey or Meek Mill who is a tidal artist. People were saying tidal inflates their streaming for their artists or does something to make it seem as if there are more sales than there are. There are so many eyes on the charts and they don't play if they think someone is trying to game the system.

Billboard almost got in trouble with the public because they thought they were going to give the #1 to the wrong artist. And there is another industry watch dog called Hits Daily Double that really keeps the industry honest. They were the ones calling out Billboard to make sure they were honestly putting the chart together. They really scrutinize sales with a microscope so if some group comes out of nowhere with some suspicious sales numbers you best believe they will be looking at the numbers to see where they came from.
