"Enough with these Chinese member castings."

This is definitely not new, but I'm getting really tired with this shit.

2. [+791, -174] Enough with these Chinese member castings. Nowdays, the Korean members in girl groups just seem like extras. Companies are always bringing in Chinese members and getting Korea unnecessary hate like this. I assure you that these Chinese members are leaving the minute they hit popularity.

I'm honestly so sick and tired of this shit. Usually I just pass by these comments and forget about it but I need to blow up real quick, just this once.

First of all, the only Chinese members that have left ANY kpop idol group that I know of are Hangeng from Super Junior and Kris, Luhan, and Tao from EXO. These are only 4 Chinese idols out of more than a dozen. And last time I checked, Zhoumi and Henry are still a part of Super Junior, and Lay is still a part of EXO - the same groups that are so often used as examples of the so-called treachery... that alone is enough to invalidate this whole argument.

But the real gag is, JYJ made a similar and arguably much more dramatic exit from the 5-membered DBSK in 2008/09, yet nobody ever calls them out on that, despite it having affected the group much more significantly. Super Junior was a 13+2 member group, and EXO had 12 members. There were still enough members to hold up the group after the member changes, and the general public probably wouldn't even have noticed if it wasn't reported in the news. But DBSK literally went from 5 to 2. Sure, the members of JYJ are getting hate nowadays for their own reasons, but very rarely if ever do I see them getting accused of betrayal.

And here's another kicker - Korea accuses Chinese kids of going to Korea to make easy money, but what about the Kpop groups that go to Japan with a half-assed debut and without even knowing how to speak Japanese, just to make easy money by holding concerts and riding off hallyu? Is that not the same? Many kpop groups, including my favs, make unexpected and arguably unnecessary debuts in Japan with translated "Japanese version" songs and take large breaks from Korean promotions just to make some extra yen. Kpop groups also often go to China to make money, whether its holding concerts or selling merchandise. And it's not just kpop, but also Korean dramas, other facets of the Korean entertainment industry, or even other kinds of Korean businesses. The truth is, the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean markets have close economic ties (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), and having a Chinese (or Japanese) idol helps with the marketability of a certain idol group in China and/or Japan.

So where is Korea getting "hate for bringing in Chinese idols"? If anything, Chinese idols promoting in Korea have brought a lot more positive attention to Korea in China, and have been an important part of not only the success of individual idol groups, but also in the money Korea makes from Chinese tourism. That's one of the reasons why China dealt with THAAD in the way that they did, because they knew that cutting off all Korean culture from China would have a notable impact on Korea's economy.

And I mean, it's also just a simple ignorant generalization. I mentioned before, those 4 are just some of many, many Chinese idols. To avoid complications, I'm also going to count other idols linked with China here, like Taiwanese idols. Like I said before, what about Henry and Zhoumi, who have been with Super Junior for 10 years, or Lay, who has stayed with EXO despite everything that he had to go through? Also in SM, what about Victoria, who's staying with f(x) even though she could make better money in China? And Amber? Or, WinWin, Kun, Lucas, Chenle, and Renjun of NCT? And my girl, Zhang Li Yin. Outside of SM, there are so many I can't even count... Jackson and Mark, that are much beloved members of Got7... Fei and Jia that were in Miss A, The8 and Jun of Seventeen, Pinky in Pristin, Cheng Xiao + Meiqi + Xuanyi in WJSN, Tzuyu in Twice, Elkie in CLC, Sally of Gugudan, Yan An in Pentagon, Cao Lu of FIESTAR, Casper in Cross Gene, Wenhan + Yibo + Yiquan of UNIQ, and yes, Guanlin of WannaOne. And there are probably more, too.

Finally, there's the issue of why a company would choose a Chinese trainee over a Korean trainee. First let me start by saying, most Korean entertainment companies would probably prefer NOT to take Chinese trainees because there's a whole language barrier and so many other loose ends to take care of, like broadcasting issues, extra contract terms, etc... so Chinese idols have to stand out or work twice as hard to be noticed, whether its for their visuals or for their talents. And this is true. Victoria, who was the first idol to do acrobatics on stage. Cao Lu and Jackson, who are basically a variety show staple now because they're such naturally funny and loveable people. Cheng Xiao, the face of WJSN... Pinky, the center of Pristin... Henry, Zhoumi, Lay, and Amber, all of which have solo potential and have debuted as solos. And the list goes on... so, if it's easier for Korean trainees to sign with a company and debut, and if 99% of Kpop idols already are Korean - if Korean entertainment companies have a surplus of Korean trainees, it's not because their debut spots are being taken away by Chinese trainees, but because they're simply not good enough. Which isn't surprising because so many young kids in Korea want to become idols nowadays.

So "enough with the Chinese member castings" my ass, there are plenty of all-Korean membered groups out there that you can choose to stan. Nobody's forcing you to stan a Chinese idol.

I agree soo much with this.

I understand that both china and korea have a history, and not a very good one at that, but that doesnt justify koreans constantly accusing and insulting people due essentially to their nationality. I'm sure korea isnt the only nation to do this, but ive never seen a society quite so accepting, and in fact applauding of remarks such as these. I don't think they see the underlying hypocrisy in everything they say either, esp when they accuse other nationalities of 'wanting to make a quick buck' in korea yet these foreign idols are brought in by ent comalnies so the korean companies can profit from their foreign fans. Also the argument that chinese idols come to korea for money/success is rediculous because they'd more successful in their own market tenfold the size of the korean market

Anyway, your post was extremely thorough. You get my upvote :)

Uh why did you include/mention Amber? She's Taiwanese-American and has no physical ties to Taiwan or China whatsoever. California, USA has been her home since birth. Koreans don't even associate her with Taiwan or China but America, like every American-born Kpop idols.

but it's only a couple handful of Korean netizens who think like that. They do not represent the majority of the country's population at all. Most who don't pay attention to Kpop probably don't even care.

Actually the one is milking the money is Kpop agencies.

Why u need foreign members from China or Japan? It's because Kpop agencies is smart, recruiting members from China or Japan make them easy to promote in China or Japan.

The one milking here is the agencies not the members.

I agree very much but it's not correct to say all Koreans think harmful thoughts about Chinese Kpop's Idols.

I must correct you in one thing. Mark and Amber are Americans. Henry is Canadian. They were born, raised and educated in their respective countries. Because of being produced by Korean companies,  their facial features, their names and being children of immigrants they are not considered Americans or Canadians.

If one day they claimed to be Chinese. They were forced to say that to get fans from Chinese people everywhere. Company's strategy.

Not only that

A lot of the foreign idols, including Chinese ones, are from affluent families and pay a lot more than Koreans for their membership. From a business POV, K companies doesn't want to lose this easy source of money.
