on one hand i've stayed friends with people who have confessed to me in the past and they're great friendships until today

on the other hand i think i'd feel super awkward trying to talk to them normally while dealing with that?

maybe i'd cut off contact for a while and get back to being friends once we moved past that...

I've never had strong feelings for anyone. I'm emotionally quite closed off, so it's not very likely to happen. But if it happens, knowing myself I'm pretty sure I can stay friends with that person. 

I have rejected friends before though, but our friendships never last because they've cut me off and it sucks, but it's understandable

Its rather difficult for me to explain in words, but if you have strong feelings for this person, even if they reject you, you still respect them as a person and if you take away the romantic prospects, do they still mean something to you in your life, can you imagine your life without them? I was in a similar situation, and they really helped me through much, even though he rejected me. He was still kind to me after. Sadly, too much happened between us in the end, so we couldn't be friends, (I'm still hurting over this) if that person is a good, then you can be friends. It just takes time.

It happened to me, I cried a lot and was sad so I was on my way to get rid of our friendship until this new hoe appeared and made me forget my old friend... now we are fine
