What made you choose your current major? Are you happy with it?

I chose my current major, because of a high school prof.  She turned me onto Psychology and I still love the field, so no complaints here.  lol  The thing I wish is that I could have taken on a second major, but i'm too far ahead in Psych to let that happen.

I took up my major because my parents forced me to. why? because the major that I'm really interested in 'does not have a future/won't guarantee a job'. And I hate it and could care about it less. #asianparentsFTW

edit: oh also, it worsened my depression and poor self esteem. Prompted to post this:

to the kids who are still in high school...please be sure of what you want to do and do just that. Money will come. Go to college to learn and educate yourself, not with the thought that your time there will eventually get you a job, because there's a high probability that you will be disappointed.

I'm no longer in college but I'm replying anyway and you can't stop me

originally I did Graphic Design. suffered from depression, dropped out. then I did Film & TV Production, was still suffering from depression, dropped out. I didn't get into any UK colleges I applied for or anywhere outside of my city in Ireland really except for a couple nowheretown colleges I never really wanted to go to, so I ended up applying for Arts (aka Liberal Arts/Humanities, one of the few subjects in Ireland where you do a variety of things before specialising) at my local university as it's the usual "we'll take anyone" thing to apply for... got into that, did English, French, History and Art History and then specialised in History and Art History for my BA. then I didn't know what to do with myself so I stayed in the same college and did an International Relations MA.

it was never really what I wanted to do, I just had to do something, so that's why I did it. I was good at English and History in secondary school which is why I chose those subjects, and I also chose Art History since I tried to keep my interest in art and design in my life somehow after dropping out of my actual design course. after that, I knew I wouldn't get into anywhere else besides my own college for postgrad and the only history MAs they had to offer were IR, Medieval history or Irish Local history, so I chose IR by default since I prefer modern history. there was a Contemporary Art History MA course but I was disillusioned with it at that point.

not very romantic or ideal but there you go. I tried to do what I loved and it didn't really work out because of my own personal issues, so I just did what I could with my situation... it's not like I disliked my BA or MA at all, but they were never what I wanted to originally do, nor do I benefit from them much now beyond "I have a degree" really.

I choose the thing that I'm good at though I don't like it.

I end up hating it so much.

It also affect my social life in a bad way because studying a thing that we have no passion for usually makes us feel exhausted and depressed.

My advice: Choose what you like, not what you're good at.

It's one of the few scholarly subjects that I like. I'm not sure how I feel about it at the moment. I still have 3-4 years before I can earn my doctorate, and things feel very stagnant. I don't know if I'm growing bored of it and crave different horizons or if I'm just going through a phase right now.

I didn't go to university in the UK in the end, I stayed in Ireland which is a different system altogether. I applied through the Irish college application system (CAO) and the UK system (UCAS) at the same time with no success in the latter, unfortunately. my application counted as an overseas application, since Ireland isn't part of the UK.

so sorry, I can't help... I live in the UK now but I'm long out of college so I don't keep up with college news really.

I'm on the same situation of you.  My parents forced me to do medicine or be military because this jobs always guarantee you a job.  :._.:

They had fear that if i choose another college i'll be unemployed.

I ended up choosing medicine but it's a hell when you are forced to do something you don't like. I passed on the mega difficult exams and i'm doing something i don't like.

it's very sad. I can't go back now and i hate my parents. I don't like to talk to people, but a medic must talk to people all the time and i hate that.  :omg:

fortunately, I'll end up doing medical Genetics and do research.  :ahmagah:

I went into university thinking I wanted to do psychology. Took first year classes and psychology was my least favourite subject, and I enjoyed my science classes a lot more. I ended up majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Organic chemistry and biology. Yes I'm very happy with my major. It takes up a lot of time and its really difficult, but i find it really interesting and would choose it again.

since I want to teach english, I thought it was the obvious major to pick. what I didn't realize is that being an english major has very little to do with the grammar and mechanics of the language (what I'm interested in), and instead it's all about reading books and analyzing them.

I'm not sure whether I'll stick with it. I know that this isn't what I want to do at all, but all the classes I've taken this year are a part of the english major requirements--meaning, if I switch majors then it will mean I've wasted an entire year. if I do switch, it will be to linguistics.

I've graduated and work as a financial portfolio manager. I'm doing it for the money I guess but I do have interests in stock markets and investing.

I don't know if I regret it since too early to tell. I've always wanted to stay in fashion retail though, was enjoyable being a sales supervisor at Ferragamo during high school/first years of college. Maybe I'll just try to get more money and switch back to retail when I feel like I've earned enough..

I've been thinking about cognition and perception.

I'm also interested in doing something with sex (not weird sounding at all).  lol

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance (I didn't specialize, so I took courses in investing, corporate finance and financial advising) and didn't want to do financial advising, the only jobs available in the city where I live. I'm going back to get a master's in accounting...and I originally ditched accounting for finance because I really liked finance and was good at it. We live in a world that values a person based on their skills and abilities, not their interests. That's why I'm choosing something practical.
