I'm here today as a lowly messenger to bring you the receipts to support this fact. A little tidbit for those of you not previously aware of it: Moonbyul wasn't initially trained to be a rapper; she was indeed a true vocalist at the time she got accepted into Rainbow Bridge World, the company that would go on to produce the Mamamoo that we know and love today. She was then later advised by their trainers to take up rapping, and gradually found that she actually felt more comfortable performing as a rapper because this position allowed her to show genuine gestures and facial expressions while performing that are more in line with her tomboyish nature. As we all know, the rest is history and it turned out to be for the best after all. Moonbyul has certainly made a name for herself as a rapper now, and her charms and charisma never fail to overflow to the brim with every lines that she gets in Mamamoo's discography. One thing people usually notice is her unique husky voice and the distinct grunt and occasional growl she uses for her raps. Which is why it always comes as so big of a surprise when they discover what her singing voice really sounds like: Okay imma let you finish but if that just isn't one of the sweetest things you've heard then you're lying to yourself But wait, it gets better! You've actually been listening to Moonbyul's singing/harmonising this whole time without realising it! The thing is, Moonbyul has quite a naturally low vocal register that adds depth and a perfect additional dimension to any harmonisation, but this also means it's not always obvious to spot what she sounds like exactly, unlike the cases of Solar or Wheein who are in charge of high notes and thus naturally stand out more in Mamamoo's harmonies. However, if you do try to identify the lowest notes you can possibly hear whenever they harmonise, chances are you'll probably find it in more occasions than you had anticipated at first. Exhibit A is Mamamoo's signature greeting which was made all the more balanced and rich in vocal texture by Moonbyul's alto range: (note that while she's singing within the alto range, she's NOT a contralto, contrary to popular beliefs. Her voice type is still a mezzo-soprano, so please do not confuse these terms and use them loosely if you're trying to quote me lmao) Down below is a compilation of Moonbyul's low notes sung around the time of Mamamoo's debut so that you could have a better grasp of her ability even from the early beginning: Another good place to start is the last 40 seconds of literally . . . you could possibly find on the internet. Compare those lives to the in which Moonbyul didn't take part, and the difference that she creates to the harmony is definitely apparent if you pay attention. Or else Mamamoo's harmonisations could never have sounded so perfect and multidimensional; it only takes one person to go off-key to ruin the whole balance in the harmony after all. So please I beg of you: do not ever underestimate any part of Mamamoo's complete 4-member package because each member has their fair share of contributing to the group's harmonious existence. I will say, though, that the one thing Moonbyul does lack is proper breath support, which can make her singing a bit breathy and shaky at times, and that is where she is not up to par with the rest of her insanely talented group, and the reason why she cannot belt out those monstrous notes Mamamoo has become famously known for. But before I get your mood down, do not fret on it just yet, my friend, because only the sky is the limit for this incredible human being. The strides of improvement Moonbyul has been making ever since becoming an idol are striking and amazing to witness. Her lack of confidence in singing might have affected some of her performances in the past, but she has continually been challenging herself and trying to eliminate her weaknesses little by little. That really is Moonbyul actually delivering vocals for the song's melody while Solar's doing her thing - belting out powerful high notes. I personally think they sound really good together; Moonbyul did a fantastic job accompanying her bandmate and not overpowering Solar who was the spotlight of the performance.
