Chinese drama recommendations

Recommended Posts

Could you recommend me some good c-dramas or even tw-dramas ? I'm mostly searching Period c-dramas. I've watched one once but I stopped after the fourth episode because the men's hairstyles (half-shaved hair) bothered me lol. As for tw-dramas, I've watched most of Rainie Yang's and some Japanese remake of BOF etc. But I heard Chinese were the best when it comes to Period dramas so I want to try again. Thanks.

Just finished watching ToGetHer with Rainie Yang, Jiro Wang and George Hu.

Honestly, this is one of the best that I've seen in Taiwanese Dramas.

It's light but touching, no overly evil antagonist and the story fits into only 12 episodes.

Technically speaking, cinematography is great, the flow is great, and OSTs are great.

I highly recommend you watching this.

For action/wuxia period dramas:

Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei æ€ªä¾ ä¸€æžæ¢… (based off the same folktale as Ilijimae)

Swordsman ç¬‘傲江湖

Legend of the Condor Heroes å°„雕英雄传 (2008)

The Myth ç¥žè¯, the TV adaptation of a Jackie Chan movie

all come highly recommended.

For more romance based ones, apparently Perfect Couple é‡‘玉良缘 which just wrapped up was really good. And who could forget everyone's favourites BBJX æ¥æ¥æƒŠå¿ƒ and Legend of Zhen Huan åŽå®« 甄嬛传?

Okay well one that is currently airing is called Fall in Love with Me. It stars the sexy Aaron Yan and Tia li. It is pretty much two advertising agencies that compete with each other and problems rise and identity's are revealed and whatnot. I personally really like it. BUT if you're big on acting, this one is not for you because it will frustrate the hell out of you lmao. Another one is Devil Beside You? Assuming that you saw that one though but if not its really good! ^^ There's also another one called Just You, it also stars Aaron Yan and Puff Guo and because of circumstances they live in the same house. But he is no random guy, he is also her boss and landlord! Hopefully you like my recommendations. C:

Just watched the first episode of You Light Up My Star and as of now I'm pretty interested. Has a similar style and feeling as ITWY (same director so of course xD) but it seems to have a much darker edge to it!

Worth checking out i think.

Wow I'm so sorry for visiting such an old post....but how good was Taiji Prodigy compared to Proud Twins? I like Dicky Cheung too and wanted to watch Taiji Prodijy but the video quality I'm watching is pretty sucky so I'm wondering if it's worth it. I really liked Proud Twins (& Chinese Paladin & LOCH) so is Taiji Prodigy just as good?

And here's a list of period Chinese drama that haven't been mentioned yet if anyone cares anymore lol

Wuxia (martial arts)

  • Heavenly Sword Dragon Saber 2009 <- part of the Condor trilogy
  • Tian Xia Di Yi <- really liked this one

Palace

  • Legend of Lu Zhen
  • My Bratty Princess
  • The Switch (Tou Long Zhuan Feng) <- this one is my person favorite
  • Jade Palace Lockheart (Gong)<- it's like ripoff version of Bu Bu Jing Xin but less serious
  • Beauties of an Emperor

I don't really watch period dramas >< and if I do, I don't really remember the names of the drama~~

Have you tried watching HK dramas? :)

Some are nice too, eg. æºå¿ƒé£Žæš´ï¼Œand the cid dramas.

For taiwan idol dramas,

maybe you can consider watching 翻糖花园?

The only period drama I've watched was The Legendary Siblings 2 with Jimmy Lin... XD

But for Taiwanese drama... I really liked The Rose a lot! It was pretty old though, aired way back in 2003.

I haven't watched a lot of Chinese (mainland China) dramas, when it comes to Mandarin-speaking dramas I usually watch the Taiwanese ones. Period/historical dramas too, unless they are airing on my local TV (which then maybe I will watch it), I don't go online and search for them.

But there are some that I actually enjoyed, like Xiao Yu Er Yu Hua Wu Que/The Invincible Duo, starring Dicky Cheung, Nicholas Tse, Fan Bingbing etc. And also The Legend of the Crazy Monk series, starring Benny Chan as Ji Gong/the crazy monk. So far it has had 3 seasons and I've watched the first and third one, all really entertaining. A classic one that I watched when I was a young child is the My Fair Princess/Princess Returning Pearl series, starring Vicky Zhao, Ruby Lin, Alec Su etc, but I'm not sure if you have watched it already. Next, there was this drama called Lotus Lantern which I also enjoyed. I don't know if you know the story of Journey to the West (Monkey God) story well but in Lotus Lantern there are some characters who also appeared in the Journey to the West story and I think it's cool how different stories can be sort of linked through some same characters. Speaking of Journey to the West, I liked the 2011 version (there are too many remakes of this lol, but I think it was the 2011 one...).

Hua Pi/Painted Skin also looks interesting, although I haven't watched it. It's based on one of the more famous Liao Zhai horror stories, and there were also 2 movies made about it. Also, an extremely popular one is Bu Bu Jing Xin/Scarlet Heart, which I was watching but didn't finish, it's really nice though! I'm just lazy lol.

I think I've only watched one modern C-drama from mainland China, and it's Let's Go Watch Meteor Shower. The producers were saying that it's not a remake of Meteor Garden/the Hana Yori Dango manga series (not licensed) but if I were to consider it as a remake then it actually be my favourite (I watched the Korean one and half of the Taiwanese one).

Anyway hope that you find something you like, with English subs haha.

P.S. Oh some time ago there was quite a big hype surrounding Lan Ling Wang, a mainland China-Taiwan collaborative period drama, staring Feng Shaofeng/William Feng, Ariel Lin, George Hu etc. I haven't watched it but you may want to check it out.
