Is it better to travel to another country during High school or College?

Assuming you will be staying for more than 2 weeks and less than 6 months. Not a large sum of money... To Korea or Japan. You know a bit of the language, but obviously not at a native's level.

Btw have you ever experienced host families?

I think it's better to go since you'll learn another language~

Sometimes it's riskey studies wise, cause you might miss important things that you won't be able to catch up on, other than that i'd say go for it.

So is it better to go during high school or should i go during College?

It depends on your goal:) I didn't study abroad in high school because I didn't want to deviate from my AP classes and extracurriculars, and the ACT. However, in college it can be more difficult since you are working towards a degree. At the same time, a larger amount of people study abroad during college. It depends on what your goal for studying abroad is and what your goal for school in general is.

I love to travel and hope everyone can do it. Should if they can.

But i never went as a student abroad lol bc i can enjoy/learn and spend less at my own pace. Aka i never went part of the school but on my own when i was still i high school and college.

Ive done numerous trips ranging between 1 week to 3 months each, around the world. (1-3 wks is for christmas and spring break typically, the 1-3months is summer season usually)

The only study abroad program that has ever enticed me is student at sea or something like that.

I have stayed with families that i didnt know because of connections (i.e. my sis french teacher hooked me up with this retired couple in switzerland for about 2 weeks and we explored their countryside and places together lol. At first it was strange & i was close to backing out because of it, but honestly one of my favorite trips im glad i went for it lol)

I assume regular host fams youd feel the same but appreciate it later?

If you get the opportunity to live in another country you definitely should do it.

Regardless what happens you will gain experience and memories you will cherish forever and ye it definitely will make you learn a lot about the world and yourself.

It doesn't matter tbh if you go during highschool or college, just try to grab any opportunity.

I say definitely, last summer (between my junior and senior year of high school) I did a summer study abroad type program in Madrid. I learned a lot while I was there (not only Spanish + the culture but also about myself which may sound cheesy but it's true lol)

+ I stayed with a host family, they were extremely welcoming and always helped me out. I also got lucky bc my host sister was fluent in English, and I didn't know very much Spanish prior to going there so luckily I was still able to communicate with them. I still keep in touch with them and I plan on going back and visiting again someday

Lol, don't worry about it! I'm perfectly happy to answer questions about it haha. I did go to school there, but it was only with other people on the program; they were language classes, and we were split into different levels based on how proficient we were in Spanish. It was a month long program, with classes in the mornings on weekdays and usually activities in the afternoons and sometimes on weekends. I didn't know my host family prior to going, but the program screens them all thoroughly + lots of them have hosted dozens of students before. The program I went through was CIEE (Council of International Educational Exchange), so it's not related to any school but they do lots of exchange programs. If your school ever has foreign exchange students there's a high probability that they came through CIEE.

Lmk if you have any other questions!

Oh one more thing, that program has scholarships available so if you're able to get one then that's a plus as well!

Thank you very much! I really appreciate it. I visited the website just now... are the summer programs only available at a specific time? It says its unavailable warstarplz.png If you dont mind me asking, how much does the program cost? The only information I saw was the application fee of $25. Were there any absolute beginners or were they all experienced with Spanish? What do the applications judge you on?

College if you want a more independant lifestyle. If you go during high school, your host family will still be watching heavily over you because you're a minor.

But cost-wise, its better to go during high school because its heavily subsidised, so its cheaper than when going during college (there's more expenses that arent covered0

Unfortunately yes, I think the summer applications open in like October? And close in maybe April. The cost varies depending on which country/program you do (they have tons!), but it's usually around $5,000-$6,000 but like I said they have scholarships available (luckily I got a full ride lol I wouldn't have been able to afford it if I didn't) + I had to pay my own airfare but lately they've been posting things about winning free airfare too so idk (of course they would once in done haha). You can be an absolute beginner at the language, I was! And my best friend went to Italy the summer before me and she was a beginner too so I can assure you that it's okay lol. And the main application was just like activities you do, preferences on smoking/pets/religion/etc, and stuff like that. The scholarship application asks about financial stuff, grades, and (pretty sure this is the most important part based on my experience at least) a short essay (maybe two?) about past experiences that have changed you or something along those lines.

Is there something specific theyre looking for in the activities you do? And is the school like a language school or...? Is it possible for your host parents to not speak English? How much of a barrier was not being able to speak the language? Thanks so much by the way

Not really, just as long as they can see that you're not completely lazy lol, you'll most likely be walking a lot for the activities and whatnot so they just wanna know that you'll be able to handle it. As for the classes, yes they're language classes. Mine were taught totally in Spanish as most high schoolers in the US do take Spanish so I was the only one who didn't know anything, it was a tad overwhelming at first but they were great about it and helped me out a lot until I got to where I could understand more of what was happening. And if you do a program to a different country chances are they'll teach using English more since chances are less people will know it. My friend who went to Italy said hers was geared more towards very beginners since not many people here learn Italian.

There is a slight chance your host family won't speak English, but for the most part there'll be at least one who can speak conversational English at minimum. Especially if you go to Europe or somewhere else where they learn English from a rather young age/where lots of tourists go. But if you do somehow end up with a host family who knows 0 English, you can probably get by using Google translate + what you learn in your classes. I don't see communication being a problem at all lol. I didn't really have any problems with not knowing Spanish, as I was usually with someone from the program or my host sister who could translate, and on the occasions that I was alone I had either learned enough to help myself out or the other person knew enough English to help me out haha
