For those who studied abroad in Korea, which university did you pick?

my university only let us attend yonsei. i had a great time, accommodations are decent, classes were great as well. although dont underestimate major courses if you plan to knock out some of your classes out. my uni required us to take the 5 days a week, 2 hours a day korean course. you are allowed to miss about 3 weeks total without penalty but obviously you want to learn th language if you dont already know it.

I went to Seoul National University through their international summer institute program. All classes are in English except for the Korean language courses (which is conducted in both English and Korean--English is used to explain grammar, Korean is used the rest of the time). Every year the field trip excursions change. When I went, some of the field trip excursions included hiking up Mt. Seorak, going railbiking at Gangchon, a temple stay, an overnight trip to Sokcho, and a visit to the DMZ. Since the school is located on a mountain and the bus you take from the airport drops you off at the bus stop downhill near the back gate and your dorm is somewhere uphill, it's a long uphill walk to get from that bus stop to your dorm once you arrive. And since the campus is huge there are buses going around the school that can pick you up and drop you off close to where your classes are.

Yonsei>>>>>>>>>>>>>>every other, you'll thank me later <3

if you're doing a language exchange program though, I read that Sogang and Ewha are better since they focus more on conversation whereas Yonsei focuses on grammar/writing than actually speaking.

   How was your experience?

I was only there for summer study abroad so my time was shorter compared to those who studied abroad during the regular school year, but I had a good time. Along with our classes, we also had field trips and cultural events like making kimchi.

I went as an exchange student and tbh it was my third option because I underestimated their quality of education and I was practically judging them based on stories and ratings online (which was pretty inaccurate) Ehwa was my second. But I really enjoyed my stay and the environment suited my taste perfectly also I really learned a great deal and that's because I pretty much know what I wanted and the resources and opportunities were unlimited, so I would say that it was the perfect place for me. Also regardless of where you pick later, just make sure it's the right environment for you (do you like noisy areas, do you like quiet areas) and if you are  picking an apartment consider the distance/price(I stayed in an apartment),I didn't have to pay but unfortunately my room mate had to and it's quite pricey, but if you can manage well  you'll be fine. Also make sure they have a broad field of options you can pick from. And hey don't limit yourself, challenges is what makes the experience fun. but in terms of education and how it is executed, they are still on top of the list for me.

Yea I did stuffs along the science route(biochem&psych) so I don't really know much about the language exchange program, we learn in english in most of my classes except the ones thats were specifically korean. and they have a hospital around so it was a bonus for me.

A friend of mine went to Yonsei and had a blast. From the stories I've heard they mainly focused on forming sentences and grammar during language courses.

Also they had trips going to different places and events, and they helping with anything you needed or wanted to arrange there. So I only know positive comments from that.

I wish I made the decision to study abroad there too. It's too late for me now warstarplz.png

  • 2 weeks later...

I went to Yonsei. It's nice because it's in Sinchon which is kind of a young, fun area. It's closed to Edae which is by Ewha Women's University (so there's a lot of cute young girly cheap shopping around that area <3), and then on the other side is Hongdae which is like the young, fun clubbing/going out area.

I heard that Korea National University is further out of Seoul and not as convenient for going out to explore Seoul, but I'd double check on that.

I did also hear that Sogang and Ewha are better for learning Korean because they focus more on conversation/speaking.

Also I had SNSD, JYP, and 15& for my school festival performers so I guess they get big names?
