Work Experience/Entry Requirements - Jobs

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone know any great sites which tell you in good detail exactly what experience and entry requirements you need for jobs, most specifically, jobs within specific companies, not just the job title.

I'm looking at different careers, some of them just require details based on the job title, but for some careers I need to know for specific companies.

I'm mainly looking at fashion here as I am very interested in it. I'm looking to find out what you would need experience wise for say a job as a sales assistant in a luxury store such as Prada, LV etc.

If anyone has any great sites for this that would be much appreciated, most just say a few things, mainly about education but nothing about exactly what qualifications and work experience needed.

Sucks no responses because I'm actually curious about this too.

Honestly rn, I work at Bridal Store and I had no experience. I made sure I looked good when I dropped off my resume and they told me that's why I got an interview..........lmfao

I used to work at the Chanel store in my city (I was quite lucky it was my first job ), so hopefully I can help.

You need to have a complete clean slate so no convictions (I think this is pretty much the same for any job though), relatively good Qualifications (All I had was my GCSE's, I have 8 A*-B), experience in a Retail environment; they say if you have previous experience of working in a Luxury/High end brand it's a lot better. Also an interest in the brand/luxury brands is relatively important (they ain't going to give you a job unless you're fully interested)

I don't really know of any websites but i'm sure you can find people who have experience working in certain brands who can tell you what they had (exp/qual wise).

To work at Prada or Louis Vuitton, at least 1-2 years of retail experience would be needed. Burberry, perhaps you can slide by with 6 months to 1 year but you'd have to do well. 1 year of experience is already getting pretty lucky. They don't like college grads because they don't fit what the company's clients can relate with that well either.

Retail is like, education helps but not important as retail experience. Start looking for jobs in smaller stores. Try a store you're going to focus on: handbags? Try Coach or maybe a department store like Lord&Taylor.

Make sure you don't hop stores because they want committed people, especially if you're applying to a kind of store that clienteles like Louis or Bottega Veneta. Have clean records, etc.

Not sure about websites but look at your mall's website, career section? Or you could look up careers like at LVMH's website. Generally 1+ years of luxury retail experience needed for sales associate.

First job!!!?!? You're so lucky! I'm clean so that's good, I've good qualifications too, actually I have a degree now as well so that's good. I've had a look at some websites which have helped but nothing has been too specific just yet, but thanks for your help.

Thanks, actually I had a look at the LVMH website, which did give some information.

Thanks for your input too, its helped.

The only question I have is because they ask of experience in a Luxury environment, how do you get into a luxury environment in the first place?

I was so lucky! Got paid £9 an hour as well :._.: I miss working there and the snooty women were my favourite along with the sugar daddies buying their girlfriends No.5. The best part is that the companies name is on your resume/CV after and it really helps with other jobs, I got my current job (Mac counter) on that alone.

You can't really, so that's why you have to start at smaller stores. It's easier if you do like a specialized store, like get lucky to get into Coach or maybe department stores for easier applications. Ask for specific section you want to work in, like handbag or shoes or make up, whatever.

Make sure you always have good relationships with your managers. Doesn't matter if it's department stores because you getting hired at LV will depend on how well you did at previous jobs lol, your ex-managers' words will matter a shit ton. If you are the best seller of the month or quarter, make sure to put it in resume/cover letter.

But of course they'd want someone with retail experience, because each store has personalized clients they will email and mail letters to.

Retail is like, education counts for maybe less than 50% to be honest. How well you met your sales goals each month matters more. Some luxury stores also have sales goals you have to meet, like 30 thousand dollars in sales per month. If you don't meet it for 2-3 months straight, you're out the door.

Oh I see what you mean now, well my main interest would be shoes, so maybe I could try getting into a shoe store.

Oh I see, thats really good information, thanks very much for that. I didn't realise so much went into it.

Right now I've asked a couple of clothing stores near where I live (all privately owned and run) If I can do work experience there which will be a good start as I really need some work experience, I'm not looking to get into a luxury goods store for a while anyway, its my aim so I don't mind working a long time for it.

I'm also going to try and learn a language as I've heard that really helps as well.

I like Louis Vuitton, but that's more of an example, but I'd love to work somewhere like Christian Louboutin or Giuseppe Zanotti.

Yeah language helps. I think 10-15% of my sales when I worked in retail were done speaking mandarin at Ferragamo...

I hope you're active and have energy though...shoes are the worst area. No joke.

Handbags? Give to customer to let them touch and maybe wear.

Clothing? Give to customer to try and refold/hang, clean fitting room.

Shoes? Nonstop going to stock room and putting shoes on customer. Sometimes you just want to kick customers in their ass.

I just might suggest department stores and ask for women's shoes department and maybe later like....Stuart Weitzman for example. I know they give free pumps every quarter I think still?

Hope your job finding goes well. Good luck

Oh almost forgot...

LV's not the best place to work at, depending on which stores. Have heard quite a bit of bad stories from friends who work/worked at LV in different stores. Co-workers? Generally nice.

Management? Nightmare. actually...nightmares.

Oh right, I'll definatley crack on learning a language then.

To be honest though it might make the job a bit more fun having to be on my feet all the time. I do enjoy shoes so it would be nice to work in that part.

Thanks very much

Oh I might avoid there then, I mean its not the place I dream of anyway, I was just using it as an example. I'd love to work in Giuesppe Zanotti though  :ahmagah:
