Let's Take a Moment to Properly Appreciate Moonbyul as MAMAMOO's Main Rapper

Recommended Posts

I wanted to build upon this post I made awhile back into a real appreciation thread for Moonbyul's skills and techniques as a rapper.  So prepare yourself for a very long post bc I'll probably never run out of material.

First thing first, let's get to know her better from Mamamoo's music videos, shall we?

Phew, that was long.  17 songs to be exact.  And yet out of that many tunes you probably wouldn't get bored with any of them; it's amazing how Moonbyul could try to alter her tone and delivery to fit with any given genre that Mamamoo tackles on next, yet still manages to keep her own sound and style in a very consistent manner.  You'll probably recognise her voice from a mile away which is definitely an advantage for a singer/rapper to have.

But that's enough of perfect studio versions now.  I'm much more impressed with how she always sounds even better than the recorded versions every time she's live on air/on stage (tbh all of Mamamoo is guilty of this lol).  And that is a trend that was established pretty much from the beginning where it all started with "Mr. Ambiguous":

(pay attention to 1:14 onwards especially)

Fun fact:  Moonbyul was initially under the guidance of Hanhae, her sunbaenim from the same company and a very successful solo rapper in the industry.  His recent song for Show Me the Money 6 achieved a CAK/PAK among other successes, so it really shouldn't come as a surprise that Moonbyul was already so well trained with staggering technical skills even at the time of her debut 3 years ago.

What about Mamamoo's live performances where they're singing without any backing tracks?  Let me bring you to Immortal Songs 2.  My favourite from Moonbyul is definitely still "Delilah" where the perfectly well-incorporated rap sections elevated the performance to a such new height that it #shookt everyone in the audience including you and me.

Another one of my IS2 faves is Mamamoo's latest appearance on the show, one of those times where Moonbyul's slow raps truly feel like they belong in the song:

Also, don't forget that she wrote the lyrics for all of her own lines!

On the topic of covers, check out this spectacular take on BtoB's "It's okay":

(go to 0:30 for the comparison between the original and Moonbyul's extraordinary performance):

Urgh she was soo goood it's unbelievable.  The combination of her fiery delivery and Wheein's high note never fails to send me chills every time.  And I absolutely love how she has become a master at building up hype through her rap section into the next part of the song.   This technique is best demonstrated through "

" and "
" imo.  Pls pls pls check out this performance of Decalcomanie below bc Moonbyul absolutely killed it:

(go to 1:33)

Question on your observation skills: did you notice that Moonbyul's signature growl has been growing more and more prominent over time?  Well I have the perfect illustration for that development where even Heechul had to acknowledge how awesome it is:

(her part starts @ 1:33)

Whoo~ that growl does things to me and I can't even do anything about it.

It is mandatory to mention "

" whenever the topic is on Moonbyul's raps so I'm leaving it here again; Moonbyul was just too freaking cool in it!  She delivered her part in such a striking demeanour it's unbelievable.

Another occasion she got to showcase her incredibly cool self is this performance of "

" that still stands out the most among its multiple versions to this day. (I can't hotlink these videos bc of the video limit per post but pls do take a listen to them by clicking on the urls; you certainly will not regret it)

One final aspect I'd like to bring up is how Moonbyul always seems to glow (ahem, I mean *twinkle twinkle* lol) during her parts whenever she gets the chance to perform her raps.  Her charisma and charms manage to speak for themselves, so I'll just leave this compilation here for your viewing pleasure:

This shy little hamster has definitely come a long way over the years, and she has now grown very comfortable in her own skin that I just cannot be any prouder as a fan and a follower.  She turned into the cutest creature alive this latest era it's unacceptable; I'm pretty sure it's impossible not to fall for her after this final video:

Honourable mentions of my favourites go to her rap parts in "Deep Blue Eyes", "Love & Hate", "

",  "
", and "
".

one of my favourite songs from Mamamoo; Moonbyul's sultry and sensual rap session got me all tied up in a knot warstarplz.png

(I actually prefer this simple version to their performance of it at their concerts lol.  less awkward, more feelings immersed in the song) ohbi.png

Lol "Take a moment"... I've basically dedicated my life to MAMAMOO and Byul...

To me one of the most impresive things about her extraordinary skills is that she can add rap parts in already well known and established songs (most of the times with no hip hop style in it) and not only make it work perfectly but dare I say even improve the song.

P.S she could growl non stop for a full song and I'll listen to it non stop

Omg those first and last sentences of your comment are so true lmaoo.  And yes I totally agree with what you're saying; like I had only known of 'vanilla' female idol rappers who follow directions so closely before Mamamoo, so to actually see one who actually knows what she's doing and who's good at it totally blew me away ahmagahplz.png   one of the reasons I'm so in love with her, I guess za5g21G.png

still massively impressed by the fact that she wrote lyrics for the entire rap sections in this cover.  they fit in with the song so well I didn't even know they don't exist in the original version
