This is the second encore concert for Yonghwa in Tokyo after previously holding the encore concert on March 28 following earlier concerts on March 7-8. Confirming the “Jung Yonghwa’s Effect†on his huge popularity in Japan, Yonghwa pulled in a total of 30,000 people in four concerts in Tokyo city. In his encore concert in Budokan, Yonghwa prepared a special rock version of ‘Feeling’ and ‘Can’t Stop’. He also performed a cover version of Maroon 5′s ‘Payphone’, and Bruno Mars’ ‘Treasure’. “I’m so happy that I can open a solo concert in Tokyo Budokan. I will work even harder in the future to show you more excellent performances. I think that because of fans there is Jung Yonghwa Existing right now, I hope today will be your ‘One Fine Day’,†Yonghwa said in the concert. Moreover, there is only me interacting with the fans this time. Without the members by my side, I would feel somewhat lonely. Although there is more time for reflection when one is alone, I would feel lonely when I think of performing with the members, encouraging one another, creating greater excitement, energy and atmosphere.†Jung Yong Hwa has been repeatedly revising in order to present a perfect and flawless performance because this would be the first time Singapore fans see him as a soloist. He said: “I have been looking at the concert set list and content, mentally reviewing the areas that went wrong in previous performances because if I had previously committed a mistake due to carelessness, there is a high chance of committing the same mistake again in the next performance. Hence, not only do I remind myself not to go wrong again, I am also thinking of the areas that could have been done better. This is the first time performing alone in Singapore since my debut 5 years ago, hope fans can give a lot of support and create beautiful memories together with me.†Jung Yong Hwa spent two years creating ‘Jung Yong Hwa brand of music’. His debut solo album was conceptualised as early as two years ago. “I have always been writing music for CNBLUE.As I write, I began to feel like writing music focused on myself. But it seems like I was also trapped within the CNBLUE framework.†As time goes by, Jung Yong Hwa started to get a feel of his own music style and place. And because of that, the solo album that he crafted showed a stronger matured man side, different from CNBLUE’s ‘sunshine boy’ style. When composing for CNBLUE, Jung Yong Hwa would highlight each member to his advantage and also take into consideration their opinions. But when preparing his solo album, he completely focused on his own ideas, creating ‘Jung Yong Hwa brand music’. Besides working with YDG, Verbal Jint and other big names in Korean music, he also co-wrote <Checkmate> with Singapore’s JJ Lin. The debut solo album involved much effort and obtained gratifying results, and even made it to Billboard World Album Chart champion. It is as if Jung Yong Hwa wants to prove that he can also make it alone. “Instead of proving myself, I feel that it’s the result from making music diligently with love. People around me told me ‘well done’, it somehow makes me feel that I seemed to have really done very well. To me, the creative process give me great joy. The result is loved by the public, this spurs me to continue working hard and create even better music.†As a singer-songwriter, Jung Yong Hwa self-professes that he is not a composing machine who is able to churn out songs at the touch of a button. “Sometimes, when I am too tired mentally, I don’t have any composing inspiration. Hence, I can’t compose when I have activities. Hence, I usually start composing after my activities. But it is not like a machine, press a button and the composition would be automatically completed. It is also not possible to compose non-stop. Although I currently have enough songs to release another album, I also have to consider if the songs are compatible with one another, if the songs can be arranged to correspond to the album’s theme.†Take this debut solo album as an example, <Mileage> and the collaboration with JJ Lin <Checkmate> are songs that he wrote long ago. Jung Yong Hwa expressed that music is a very big part of his life. Many songs will evoke his memories, making him recall his mood when he heard the song and even the weather. “When I listen to my compositions now, I can still remember clearly my feelings when I wrote the song. I think that music can let the listener think of certain scenarios. <One Fine Day> evokes a cold winter night whereas CNBLUE <Can’t Stop> gives one the feeling of having endured the cold winter and spring is approaching.†Jung Yong Hwa, who debuted six years ago as CNBLUE leader, feels that being able to become a singer was luck. “I grew up in Busan. When I was studying, Seoul feels like a very far place hence I simply couldn’t imagine becoming a singer at that point.
