[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Black" Episode 11

photo911551.jpg

New chapters are opening in "Black", but none are leading to good places. Man-soo is no longer a CEO and he finds a use I welcome, but also fear. Ha-ram has to face Soo-wan's desperate advances at who she thinks is Moo-gang, but our heroine has much bigger things to worry about right around the corner. I have a lot of questions, but my anticipation is intact and the will to wait for possible answers strong.

Ask and you shall receive, because "Black" knows just what I need at times. Just as I began giving up on Man-soo (Kim Dong-jun) making an impact, the young man decides to use his previously teased skills and Moo-gang's (Song Seung-heon) basement to possibly crack this case, or at least to discover his own brother's connection to it. It is highly satisfying seeing Man-soo finally becoming connected to the main story.

photo911550.jpgphoto911549.jpg

"Black" is mostly great with following through, but I am still waiting on some things. For example, how is Ha-ram's (Go Ara) meddling being experienced by the other side? Can capsules be mistaken and if not, how come no one is panicking over their targets surviving? Also, did no Reapers before 444 (Kim Tae-woo) feel or see Ha-ram notice them? That being said, Clara's (Cha Chung-hwa) appearance not raising a flag is now nicely explained. It seems the Underworld lies a lot about pre-retirement changes.

Another current big one on my list of "whats" is Ji-dong (Park Doo-sik). If Black did not maintain Moo-gang's skills, how can our Runaway Reaper be practicing medicine like nobody's business? Was the man who was working a lousy job catering to an idol's whims somehow a graduate of medicine? Given his family's portrayed poverty, it does not feel likely and his magical chameleon act is therefore something glaring enough to warrant an explanation, especially since he appears to be a pivotal end-game character.

photo911548.jpgphoto911547.jpg

Coming back to the latest good things, unless you are Ha-ram or anyone else in "Black", the blind man introduced carries an ominous message. We have already known that dire consequences follow the changing of human fate, but hearing it from someone who was clearly like our heroine before being blinded or perhaps blinding himself to escape just makes it feel all the more real and approaching. The universe will not let bygones be bygones.

Speaking of bygones, it is time to tackle the topic of our scarred killer (Woo Hyun) and perhaps Leo's (Kim Jae-young) past very soon as well. As for the currently teased love square, I am not worried at this point. With about one third of the drama to go and characters stuck in childhood figuratively or literally, these flings are not going anywhere. The bond is there, however and it will hurt badly.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Black" Episode 12

photo911979.jpg

For all the teasing about consequences that "Black" has taken its sweet time to deliver, it sure is fast with getting to it after the latest warning. The reality of her meddling dawns on Ha-ram as she realizes the identity of the man she has saved while Black deals with his newfound sympathy. The past mysteries boil closer to the surface than ever, as Gwang-gyeon and Man-soo get on the case.

I can see possible hints of the extension curse in episode twelve, but I can definitely not call it slow, as the series gets back into high gear when it comes to revelations. "Black" has been a pause-and-rewind type of story, but it sometimes goes too fast for its own good and for audience retention. I welcome the change from padded, empty plots, but so much happens in this episode and I need a moment.

photo911978.jpgphoto911977.jpg

Most important right now is Ha-ram's (Go Ara) fate. Her capsule was opened before, but perhaps it does not count if not opened by a Reaper. The question is, does it have to be opened by the one assigned to her? Is there precedent for this? If not, perhaps we are about to find out what happens when a soul goes unclaimed. Ha-ram cannot be dead yet, but she can very well be undead; unable to move on until 444 (Song Seung-heon/Kim Tae-woo) returns.

However, we do not even know if this is due to the capsule at all. If Ha-ram is the child of a Reaper, she may have other skills. I have also wondered if this is the case with Leo (Kim Jae-young). He warns Lee  Mi-so to be careful, yet again exhibiting foresight. He also survived overdosing in the hotel and does not seem concerned over his well-being at all. If these are hints to his nature, perhaps it includes the perk, or curse, of invincibility.

photo911976.jpgphoto911975.jpg

This means that the series will have to start becoming more focused on the supernatural elements and it is about time that it does. As we wait for that, we have a moment to decipher who is lying and why over Joon's (Lee Hyo-je) fate, although perhaps "BT" knows it the best. There are countless of series which seem to hope that viewers have forgotten previously delivered information when they change things up, but "Black" has been quite consistent.

I believe its opening scene is accurate and so is the vision of Joon's ghost soaking wet. My guess is that Moo-gang's (Choi Seung-hoon) heart failed him during the chase and that it was taken from a possibly injured Joon at 4:44 AM, 24 minutes after the hit-and-run. Seung-cheol (Lee Joon-seo) must have been the replacement. Far-fetched, but I am open to anything in a series about a psychic and a Reaper.

  • Black: Episode 11black1102547a.jpg

Black struggles with his new empathetic desire to save lives, a desire that directly goes against his Reaper instincts. And his jealousy finds him with a new non-Reaper roommate, which could definitely cramp his style, if not outright steal it. Kwang-kyun gets closer and closer to figuring out what happened Clara, and another villain rears his ugly head.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

black1204263.jpg

As the thugs-for-hire beat down the Mujin mall protestors, Ha-ram rushes in to try and pry her stepfather away. As she grabs him, she sees that he’ll die in a fire — which confuses her, because it means he won’t die at the protest.

She hears one of the protestors ask about the kids, and Ha-ram discovers that the children of the protestors are in one of the temporary buildings next to the construction site. Black runs into the middle of the fray, protecting Ha-ram from the thugs-for-hire.

Congressman Kim goes to check on the children who are playing inside, and a masked man pours fuel outside the temporary building, lighting it on fire.

black1100219.jpg black1100243.jpg

Black fights off the thugs and Ha-ram runs to where she sees dark smoke billowing. Kwang-kyun also rushes into the fight, firing off a warning shot to get everyone to stop. Black realizes Ha-ram’s disappeared.

She’s found the temporary building that’s slowly catching on fire, but the doors are chained shut and the windows are barred, so Congressman Kim and the children can’t escape. Ha-ram looks in the window to see not only smoke from the fire starting to fill the container, but also so many Shadows that she can barely see the children.

Black finds Ha-ram desperately trying to break the chain on the door and screaming for help. He hesitates, wrestling with his Reaper instincts to not interfere with death, recalling Joseon talking about how difficult it was for the Reapers to take the souls of the innocent children that died in the mall collapse.

black1100414.jpg black1100429.jpg

Remembering Seung-chul’s father who said that, unlike “widow†or “orphan,†there’s no word for parents who have lost a child, Black decides to help the children. He ignores the dozens of Reapers patiently waiting as he uses his superhuman strength to bend open the bars on the window, creating enough space for the children to be freed.

As the congressman passes children through the window into Ha-ram’s arms, the Shadows begin to disappear. Kwang-kyun and the protestors also run up to the building, and Kwang-kyun shoots off the lock, opening the door for the rest of the children to be freed.

Ha-ram’s stepfather sees her helping, surprised that she’s there. He runs into the building just as Black is trying to save a little girl who’s terrified to leave past the flames. Black’s clue to find her is her Reapers (which he again ignores), and he and Congressman Kim manage to bring the girl to safety.

COMMENTS

What a horrible little man. Even though the characters may not know that Scarface is the same person as Spider-tattoo, we the viewers know, and while I was horrified that he would get such pleasure out of killing dozens of children, it certainly does seem to prove that he killed his wife. Once an arsonist, always an arsonist. But it’s interesting that Missing-finger doesn’t seem to be aware of him — I’m pretty sure that Scarface locked the doors after the fire was set, and had nothing to do with Missing-finger. Setting fire to a building with a bunch of children in it is definitely not cool, but I don’t think Missing-finger actually wanted to harm them. I think he was just following Man-ho’s orders to scare the protesters, but originally left the doors unlocked so the children could escape and be easily saved. If you’re worried about your child, you’re not going to be protesting the building of a mall. Or so I assume the logic goes.

I do have to wonder about Scarface’s serial killer ways. Based on the photos of his victims, other than Mi-so there are two women and a man (plus the unknown photo that he held in his hand, the one we couldn’t see). I know one of the women was the director of the mental health hospital where Scarface escaped, and I’m assuming the other woman was his wife. But the photo of the man was hard to make out — I thought it could be Creepy Doc, which might explain why Loser is in Creepy Doc’s body. But then what about the body that Scarface was stabbing at the end? Is it the guy in the photo? If so, it can’t be Creepy Doc, since we know Loser is in that one. So who is it, then?

Maybe that blind seer knows. In a drama about Grim Reapers and multiple brutal deaths, I don’t know why I would be most disturbed by a mysterious blind prophet, but I am. It brings in a classical element of fate, which usually means disaster for heroes who try to ignore it, especially because they ultimately fulfill the prophecy whether they like it or not. Just as Ha-ram has inadvertently done, having saved Scarface not once, but twice if we include the time when she warned him to move after getting the vision of the rookie writer committing suicide and falling on him. Even though Ha-ram can’t bear to see someone die, I wonder how she’d react, knowing she’s saved the life of father’s killer more than once, and each time she saved him, he’s gone on to kill more people.

black1100771.jpg

Going back to that rookie writer, I’m hoping the inclusion of the suspiciously similar story to this drama’s actual writer, Choi Ran, and her experience of having a big name writer supposedly plagiarize her drama scripts after she was removed from the project is more than just a little “gotcha!†in-joke. I hope it’s actually a way for Leo to prove he’s more than just the drug-addicted pretty face everyone assumes him to be.

The more I see of Leo, the more I’m curious about him, since I’d just dismissed him as one of those pretty faces, a convenient plot device to explain why Loser decided to shirk his duty, forcing Black to inhabit Moo-gang’s body. (Plus Leo is a never-ending source of humor whenever Ha-ram’s fangirl ways make Black jealous.) But there has to be something more to Leo, something important that explains why Moo-gang met him that day in the hotel before Moo-gang was shot, and why Moo-gang left him in the bathroom as he was overdosing. There has to be a reason Scarface keeps sending Leo threatening letters that goes beyond just being a crazy serial killer.

At least Black is finally learning to act on his empathy, willing to risk whatever comes from being found out that he’s using Moo-gang’s body if it means saving the lives of children. I also love that the mere threat of having Man-soo live with Ha-ram means Black will agree to just about anything, although I’m also hoping for some bromance to come out of this forced cohabitation because Man-soo definitely needs a friend and confidant (I was going to say a “human†friend, thinking of Sip-gyeong’s passing, until I remembered who Black really is). Yes, Ha-ram cares about Man-soo, but she still seems to see him primarily as her boss and someone who’s needed her help to be saved from the Shadows. Ha-ram only has eyes for her “Joonie Oppa,†which is a pity, because I can’t bear to imagine the heartbreak she’ll endure when she discovers the truth about Joon and his untimely demise.

Black:  Even though I was always by her side I could not save her. It is my fault.

Scarface killer: This girl is the dead detective's daughter! How did she find me/find her way here?

Mad dog: How long are you gonna continue with this, it's time to stop.

Black: Where ever you are, from now on stay by my side. I will definitely find the culprit whatever it takes.

  • Black: Episode 12black1200170.jpg

Some truths are finally revealed. Well, as much truth as we’re allowed to know right now, because with every answer comes another dozen mysteries, but for Ha-ram it’s more than enough to rock her to her core. There’s also a lot of investigation into Scarface, where everyone learns that he’s just as terrible as we already knew.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

black1200115.jpg

Kwang-kyun wonders how Black knew Mi-so was murdered by the same person who murdered the mental health hospital director, and Black explains that the style is exactly the same — the same type of weapon, the same depth and style of the knife marks.

However there’s one major difference: the mental health director was first stabbed in non-vital areas because the murderer wanted her to suffer before killing her. As for Mi-so, Scarface first slashed her throat, attacking a vital point in the beginning, and then followed up with stabbing the rest of her body. All this implies the killer had a grudge against the hospital director, but not Mi-so.

black1200230a.jpg

Soo-wan tries to track down information about a person who signed one of Moo-gang’s old receipts. The restaurant owner tells her that he can’t remember — the date on the receipt was two months ago.

Soo-wan originally found the receipt in Moo-gang’s clothes, asking him why he went all the way to Chuncheon for lunch and pointing out the signature isn’t his. Moo-gang told her that he’s investigating his brother’s hit-and-run accident from 20 years ago, and that the signature was from someone helping him with the case.

She’s convinced that whomever signed the receipt also knows where the tapes are, and is more determined than ever to find this person so she can protect Moo-gang.

black1200335a.jpg black1200367a.jpg

As the detectives literally fight over which team should take over Mi-so’s case, Ha-ram studies the eyewitness drawing of Scarface, realizing it’s the same man she rescued from the fire. That leads the detectives to the man who hired all the thugs to fight off the Mujin protestors. The detective who’s in charge of the case is, of course, Missng-finger’s informant.

Ha-ram blames herself for saving Scarface, but as she’s fretting about her meddlesome ways, Black arrives with Leo. Black boasts that Leo is following him to learn from the best, and Leo explains that it’s for his upcoming drama role.

Leo proudly tells Ha-ram that he’s using the original script from the rookie writer, but at the mention of the writer, Ha-ram suddenly realizes that she saw also Scarface at the broadcast station. He was the one she warned to move so he wouldn’t die by the writer falling on him.

black1200467a.jpg black1200437a.jpg

Knowing that the broadcast station would have CCTV footage, she’s ready to head out to see if Scarface was caught on camera. But Black, frustrated, warns her to keep her nose out official police business — let the detectives find the serial killer. If Ha-ram keeps trying to butt in, she could get hurt or even killed.

But Ha-ram refuses to just sit back and do nothing, especially now that she knows that she’s saved Scarface’s life twice already. If they don’t do something now, Scarface could end up killing another person.

They do find CCTV footage at the broadcast station, but Scarface is hidden in the shadows and can’t really be seen. Mi-so was the MC that night for the music program, and Ha-ram realizes that Scarface must have been waiting for Mi-so.

COMMENTS

Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Ha-ram can’t be dead! She just can’t be!

At least, I don’t think she can be. If this were any other drama, I wouldn’t be so worried that one of the main protagonists was in serious danger of being killed off, especially when there are still six episodes to go. But… this is Black, where people die all the time, and where dead spirits are even given another chance at life. I’m still hoping that there’s enough Reaper in her (from her father’s side, y’know) to keep her from dying. Or that the afterlife will be thrown into enough of a tizzy trying to figure out what to do about a woman who is half-human/half-Reaper that they decide she can’t die just yet.

But it does make me wonder… if Ha-ram did die, would she be considered a missing person, since her body has yet to be found? Would she come back as a so-called “pure-blood†Reaper, with no memories of her own? Or would her half-Reaper status allow her to keep her memories? Would she be able to find her way back to Black and help him reveal the truth of Joon’s murder? But what am I saying: Ha-ram didn’t die; there’s no reason for me to be so worried; Black will find her in the next episode and she’ll be magically cured of her knife wound and they’ll continue to save children’s lives; la-la-la, I can’t hear you tell me any different.

Even though I’m not pleased at the way Ha-ram found out (oh, Soo-wan, stop lying to yourself that you’re doing good by your efforts to protect Moo-gang — instead, come further and further to the dark side, because I think I’d like you a lot more if you didn’t look like a perpetually scared deer and instead accepted your antagonist role in trying to hide evidence), I’m relieved that Ha-ram finally knows that Joon and Moo-gang are two different people. Yes, her heart is crushed, but it also means we can focus on investigating what really happened to Joon. And even though I can believe Joon was killed the night of the 19th/early morning of the 20th, I don’t for a second believe that he was killed by that hit-and-run driver. I’m going to need more evidence than a hand with the red-string bracelet peeking out from under a blanket. Where’s my DNA proof, people!

black1203581a.jpg

As much as I’ve been enjoying the general WTF-ness of the quick pace and millions of clues and details thrown at me each week, something about this episode felt slghtly off. Maybe it’s because we already knew Scarface was the same person who was responsible for the fire back in 1997 and who killed Ha-ram’s father (among many others). So watching Ha-ram, Black, and Kwang-kyun gradually reach the same conclusion felt a little anticlimactic, like, yes, yes, we already know, c’mon, let’s get to solving the mystery of what exactly happened back in 1997 to make Mujin the cornerstone of every terrible thing our characters have gone through. I’m not saying this episode was “filler†because we did get our weekly dose of new clues and details (all of which will undoubtedly be meaningful later) — and because I don’t think this show can do “fillerâ€. But I just wish somehow we could have gotten everyone on the same page a little bit faster.

At least there was another hour to enjoy Black’s character growth (admittedly, for Black, it’s two steps forward, one-and-half steps back — but at least there’s progress!). I was impressed that he would actually swallow his jealousy and tell Man-soo, his number one rival (or maybe number two rival, if we count Leo), to escort Ha-ram to where Joon’s ashes are kept. I also got a few chuckles out of the fact that he tried to ignore his depression and loneliness by going shopping, because, as Joseon pointed out, that’s a total human reaction (and don’t I — and my poor bank account — know it). Black is becoming more and more human each week, and I love it. Although I do still appreciate when his arrogant Reaper ways express himself, particularly the demeaning nicknames he gives everyone. Which is why it made me gasp to actually hear him call out for Ha-ram by using her name instead of the “Chewing Gum†nickname he’s used ever since he realized that he needed her ability to see the Shadows.

Ha-ram is an important person to Black, whether he realizes it or not. She’s no longer just a pair of eyes to borrow so he can accomplish his mission. In fact, he purposefully set aside his mission (by letting Leo leave) so that he could try and help Ha-ram cope with the realization that a man she saved killed another person. That empathy is not something we would have seen from Black in the early episodes, since he probably would have dragged Ha-ram along to Leo’s wardrobe fitting, not caring about her inner turmoil since everyone has to die sometime. That’s the Reaper rule. But not for Ha-ram, I hope. No, I can’t accept that she’s dead. Not yet. Not when Black is finally discovering how much she means to him.

  • Black: Episode 13black1300588a.jpg

Black becomes single-minded in his pursuit of Scarface, determined to avenge Ha-ram’s death. Scarface’s role in the murders from twenty years ago is revealed, as is the reason Moo-gang visited him in the mental hospital. Kwang-kyun’s convinced he’s figured out the real culprit, but he still needs proof. Soo-wan does a little sleuthing of her own.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Soo-wan tracks down another restaurant owner who remembers Moo-gang eating there a few months ago. The woman says Moo-gang was looking for her boss, who wasn’t there at the time. The restaurant owner was sure Moo-gang would return since he left medication behind, but she never saw Moo-gang again.

Black gets the phone call that Ha-ram lost at least two liters of blood, which means her survival isn’t likely. Black portals to the crime lab to see the proof himself, and despite the 99.98 percent certainty that the DNA found in the blood belongs to Ha-ram, Black demands they retest the blood. As he shouts at the lab tech, Black suddenly clutches his heart and collapses in pain.

Soo-wan researches Moo-gang’s prescriptions and then confronts Creepy Doc, pointing out that Moo-gang can’t take that kind of medication. Creepy Doc says Moo-gang asked him to get the migraine medication for a friend. Creepy Doc is also curious why Soo-wan suddenly reappeared after resigning, but there’s no time to talk about that, since they’re both distracted by Black being rushed into the ER.

black1300310a.jpg

Soo-wan watches as Black regains consciousness after his collapse. He immediately gets up and angrily asks Soo-wan if she was the one who told Ha-ram the truth about Joon and Moo-gang. Furious, blames Soo-wn for Ha-ram’s death. If Soo-wan hadn’t told Ha-ram the truth, then Black would still be by Ha-ram’s side and could have protected her.

Creepy Doc tries to prevent Black from leaving the hospital, but Black tosses Creepy Doc aside, which causes the capsule in his pocket to roll out. Black picks it up and sees that its his missing capsule. Black clutches the capsule to his chest.

Soo-wan is stunned to discover that Ha-ram is dead. As Soo-wan gets into her car, Scarface suddenly pops up from the back seat and holds a knife against her throat. Eeek!

black1300440a.jpg

Scarface says that he needs money in order to finish plan, which now is on a speedy track thanks to the public hullabaloo about Ha-ram’s Death. Scarface says that there’s just one more person left to kill — someone that means the most to “that jerk.†Scarface giggles in delight as he anticipates his revenge.

As Joseon and Hip-hop try to figure out how the capsule ended up at the hospital, Black blames himself for Ha-ram’s death. Joseon gently reminds Black that Ha-ram didn’t want him around any more, so it’s not like he had a choice to stay away.

Hip-hop wonders what happened to Ha-ram’s soul, since the capsule was opened at the hospital by someone else, and Black wasn’t near Ha-ram to escort her to the afterlife. Joseon muses that Ha-ram’s soul must be so scared and confused without a Reaper to explain to her that she’s dead — that’s the hardest realization for a human to have, and is a main reason why there are Reapers to help escort them.

COMMENTS

I don’t know how we can get so many answers yet I still feel almost as clueless as ever. While we know exactly how Clara was killed, and why so many others were killed, we’re still not much closer to figuring out what happened to Joon. Well, except by process of elimination, since we know Scarface wasn’t responsible. He’d want full credit for killing Joon, and besides, he’s all about stabbing his victims in the gut — not running them over with a car.

I was a little surprised that we killed off Scarface so soon, since such a crazy villain like him would normally be good fodder as the main villain for an entire drama, not just for a few episodes. But it’s not like this show is exactly lacking in villains, is it? Everything seems to point to Man-ho being the main guy behind it all, since he signed off on the insurance payout originally, it’s implied that he was Mi-so’s lover, and he has a butterfly watch (I’m not saying “the†watch because we already know there are two — the other one is presumably still being investigated by the watch expert). He also made it clear that he’d do whatever it takes to remove any obstacles that prevent Royal Group from succeeding. Plus he killed a dog in cold blood! Definitely a villain. I’m not sure if he’s the villain, though. I won’t complain if he is, if only so I can be satisfied that karma works and Sip-gyeong’s death is avenged.

I was also surprised that so many characters were barely visible this episode. Not just the obvious, such as the show trying to convince us that Ha-ram is dead (She’s not dead! She can’t be! There’s no way! She’s just… sleeping in her mysterious location! Yeah!).

But Man-soo didn’t show up once, which is odd, since he lives with Black and definitely knows a lot about those missing 1997 files. Then I briefly wondered if Missing-finger was actually on the side of the good, since he knew Scarface would attack Leo and he intervened to try and capture Scarface. I don’t know what I was expecting with Missing-finger, but him randomly showing up to save someone’s life in order to take down a bad guy doesn’t exactly fit the profile I’ve created of him over the last few episodes. He’s definitely not a good guy, but then again, he did kill Byung-shik, who was a baddie. I guess Missing-finger exists in a morally grey world where he’s a brutal killer and torturer — but at least he also kills bad guys?

black1301899a.jpg

I’m slightly mystified why Black didn’t confront Creepy Doc about having the capsule. Perhaps it’s just the dazed shock of believing Ha-ram’s dead, but you’d think Black would realize there’s something suspicious about the the fact Creepy Doc seemed to know about the capsule. Then again, I do love Black becoming more emotional (aka “humanâ€) so I can’t really complain about him suddenly forgetting that his original purpose is to track down Loser. Seeing Black determined to take vengeance for Ha-ram’s death (even though she’s totally not dead! NOT DEAD!) was pretty exciting, since it clearly wasn’t just about him being angry that he could no longer use her vision skills, but because he truly cared about her and felt responsible for her.

Although I was a little astonished at those fight scenes. I didn’t expect someone like Scarface to be so athletic, especially against Black who can easily take down an entire gang of thugs without breaking a sweat. Yet Scarface, this little old man who recently escaped from a mental hospital where he was in terrible shape, was able to grab Black and throw him around, making Black so angry that it caused Black’s neck tattoo to glow (or do whatever it is that causes the tattoo to glow). When Scarface said he’d seen that tattoo before, I immediately rewound to watch the fight scene against Ha-ram’s father. It looks like we’ll still have to wait for official proof that Ha-ram’s father was a Reaper, because while I could see in the blocking the potential for Scarface to see a glowing neck tattoo, there was no tattoo visible. I’m convinced that’s where Scarface saw it before, though.

I’m also wondering about Scarface’s “last†kill, the one that most would hurt the man who hired him. Why Leo? If Man-ho is the main villain that all the clues point to, this doesn’t make sense to me. Leo and Man-soo might be friends, but that’s no reason why Leo’s death would particularly hurt Man-ho. Considering Leo can’t be any older than Ha-ram, he would have been a child at the time everything happened in Mujin. I’ve enjoyed piecing together the vague clues and hints to figure out where the show is going, but this one has me baffled, even though I feel like the clues must be leading to something. Leo was one of the last people Moo-gang visited before he got shot, the day he was apparently getting some major evidence about Joon’s death. Leo’s Ha-ram’s favorite star. Leo was a major reason Loser killed himself and inhabited Creepy Doc. Leo saved the rookie writer. Leo has a drug addiction. Scarface labored over sending those threatening letters to Leo. These are not just coincidences — nothing on this show is a coincidence. Which means Leo is important — but why?

  • Black: Episode 14black1402945a.jpg

Everybody struggles to understand their emotions this episode, particularly those who refuse to believe that they’re in love (ahem, Black). There’s also some stuff about the mysterious missing tape, as well as tracking down the culprit responsible for Scarface killing all those people. Not to mention dramatic attempts at being the Noble Idiot. Because of feeeeeeeeeelings.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

black1400119a.jpg

Black suddenly jolts to consciousness in the back of an ambulance. He remembers seeing a key on the ground when he was looking for Ha-ram, and returns to that area to find an old, rusty gate in a tunnel. The gate is locked.

Shining a flashlight inside, he sees Ha-ram. He uses his supernatural strength to bend the bars of the gate so he can squeeze through. Black gently pulls Ha-ram into his arms, and, thinking she’s dead, he quietly apologizes for being too late.

He soon realizes that Ha-ram is still alive, and tries to help her regain consciousness. When she does, she shrieks at him, pushing him away and desperately pleading that he kill her and no one else. She huddles in a corner, sobbing as she repeats that the other person had nothing to do with it.

The crime lab discovers that there was actually two types of blood found where Ha-ram was stabbed, which means that the two liters of lost blood was from two different people. That other person was Man-soo, who Ha-ram protectively cradles in her arms.

A flashback reveals that just after Scarface stabbed Ha-ram, Man-soo came flying from out of nowhere to tackle Scarface. Man-soo clung to Scarface, urging Ha-ram to run away, but when she saw Scarface stab Man-soo, Ha-ram ran back to try and save Man-soo.

After knocking Scarface to the ground, Ha-ram helped Man-soo run away (or limp away) until she found the gate in the tunnel. Remembering Joon once gave her advice (that her father gave him) that the safest way to protect herself was to lock herself up so the enemy couldn’t reach her, she attempted to padlock the gate shut as Scarface approached.

black1400336a.jpg black1400347a.jpg

The padlock key dropped on the Scarface’s side of the gate, but instead of unlocking it, Scarface finished locking the gate. Knowing Man-soo and Ha-ram would be unable to escape, he gleefully left them to die, tossing the key aside as he walked away.

Man-ho’s father has died, and Moo-gang’s mother sadly tells the other attending doctors to contact his sons.

Just then an ambulance arrives with Man-soo, Ha-ram, and Black. Man-soo’s in the worst condition, unconscious with stab wounds in his chest. Creepy Doc watches in astonishment as Ha-ram and Black follow Man-soo’s gurney. Creepy Doc is stunned that they’re still alive.

COMMENTS

Awwwwww. On the one hand, it’s really sweet that Ha-ram realized that she likes Black not because she thinks he’s her childhood sweetheart, but because of what she’s known about him since they’ve started working together. On the other hand, she now thinks she’s in love with Moo-gang, which — while closer to the truth — still isn’t the whole truth. And if we’re correct in our theory that Black’s true spirit is Joon, then poor Ha-ram’s mind is going to be blown even more: “I’m in love with Joon, but now I realize it’s really Moo-gang, but he’s actually Joon’s spirit in Moo-gang’s body.†Which might be a pretty sweet deal, all things considered (hey, we don’t know what Joon would have looked like all grown up!). I definitely loved watching Black quietly find ways to stay in Ha-ram’s orbit. It was clear that he respected her boundaries, but still wanted to make sure she was safe, especially since she nearly died because he wasn’t by her side. Also the way he kept tabs on her reminded me of the way Reapers patiently follow their assignments until it’s time to reap a soul.

I feel slightly vindicated that everyone else in this show is just as mystified as I am about how Man-ho and Leo are connected. If they even are connected. I’d already suspected that Man-ho, that evil dog-killer, might actually a red herring to distract us from the mysterious man who’s truly been calling the shots. There’s definitely someone else out there, because it couldn’t have been Man-ho who ran Kwang-kyun off the road since Man-ho is (presumably) in jail. That means there’s another Big Bad out there (and I reaaaalllly hope the watch he showed Kwang-kyun was Man-ho’s, because I think I’ll tear my hair out if it’s revealed that this “one of a kind†designer watch has yet another copy out there).

I also had a sudden suspicion that maybe Leo did die that day in the hotel and Loser stole his body instead of Creepy Doc (but Creepy Doc definitely has some Reaper in him because how else can he see the Reapers at the hospital or know about the capsule?). It kinda made sense, for a hot feverish minute, until I realized that Ha-ram would have noticed the Shadow in Leo, and it doesn’t explain why Creepy Doc wants to kill Leo. Then I put on my conspiracy sunglasses and decided that, if it’s true that Ha-ram can’t see her own Shadow/Reaper, then maybe she can’t see Loser because if he and Black were partners, then technically they should be reaping Ha-ram’s soul together. Unless it’s not a hard-and-fast rule that Reapers work in pairs. After all, when Ha-ram’s mother and father got into that accident on their wedding day, it looked like there was only one Reaper in the backseat. Or maybe the underworld decided to learn from experience and realized working in pairs means a Reaper is less likely to make a run for it, like Ha-ram’s father did. Or maybe I’m overthinking the logistics of Reaperdom. Maybe I should just take Chief Bong’s advice and wait for the show to explain it to me.

black1401848a.jpg

At least we’ve finally found the tape! I think. Because if Man-ho really was the one who tried to hush everything up by hiring Scarface to find the tape (even though he wasn’t able to), then you think Man-ho would have discussed it with his father, who might have told him “Hey, I actually have that really incriminating tape locked up in my secret safe deposit box.†If nothing else, a few lives would have been saved. I’m torn about Chairman Oh. He’s obviously done some serious misdeeds in his life (how timely and enraging it is to think about a powerful older man coercing an underage girl to have sex with him). But I just can’t peg him as being truly evil for some reason. There seemed like a resigned acceptance of his fate — like he knew he needed to pay for his crimes.

I hate the fact that Man-soo will eventually have to see his father, who he idolized, in such a terrible light. There are so few people in Man-soo’s life that he can trust and respect — and love — that to have his memories of his father tainted by the actions of the past will likely destroy him. Man-soo’s such a squishy marshmallow that I want to protect him from enduring anything horrible ever again. Although, I have a lot of respect for the way he handled Ha-ram’s rejection, especially now it means I can impatiently wait to see how long it takes for Man-soo to realize how awesome Tiffany is and that he might make a pretty cool stepdad. I’m just sayin’.

I also have some grudging respect for Soo-wan confessing that she lied about Black pretending to be Joon just to use Ha-ram. But now I’m worried that Soo-wan will do something dumb and dangerous — well, not like that would be anything new for her, but she certainly seems to be giving off the vibe of “I have nothing else to lose so I might as well take down everyone I can or die trying.†Considering she’s still the only living witness of the teenage prostitution ring, she actually holds some power if she decides to reveal what really happened in Mujin — and hopefully take down even more powerful and corrupt people while she’s at it.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Black" Episode 15

photo916719.jpg

You can never really prepare yourself for some surprises, but "Black" has at least been kind enough to set so much up for itself that anyone would see the inevitable cutting of corners happen. We confirm a lot of things in this episode and some are great to find out, but we also learn of possible truths that do not seem to fit quite as imagined. The same goes for the romance, which never stood a chance.

A little on said romance before moving forward, because it is a monumental error to introduce it so late. There are so many interesting conflicts that are created from it. On Ha-ram's (Go Ara) side, she feels that she is dating the amnesiac brother of her childhood love who has also been in danger several times due to her. On 444's (Song Seung-heon) side, I cannot even begin to speak of the big "Nope" alarms this should raise.

photo916718.jpgphoto916717.jpg

I do appreciate the cutesy nature of it. It seems Ha-ram's dating was barely out the door previously and we know that Black has never seen adulthood as a human. His childish selfishness shows here. At the same time, how did the creators think such a complicated and ultimately doomed relationship could be given any kind of justice during the drama's last four episodes? Even the extension could not save this from its issues.

Then we have the possibly ultimate villain. I have said before that it is not Nam Joong-pyo, but the actor switcharoo is unfortunate. It is a major pet peeve of mine when creators of a mystery punish viewers, instead of rewarding them for engaging with said mystery. The form we saw earlier had very little to do with Kim  Yeong-seok's (Lee Doo-il). Can I hope beyond hope that the series is actually pulling our leg with its current revelation?

photo916716.jpgphoto916715.jpg

With only three episodes left, I wonder what will be explained in general and if former plans will be abandoned. Gwang-gyeon (Kim Won-hae) was so anticlimactically disposed of and although I know that no body in Dramaland means no death, I do believe that his is real and it should have been more delicately handled. He was a beloved character, after all. So many things do not add up, current villain included.

As for the supernatural and Joon's (Lee Hyo-je) death? We confirm a lot in this episode, but I am not sure if we will ever get to know what went on with Moo-gang's mother and the time of death that did not match 444's. Or if the doctor is really our Runaway Reaper. I hope they are not setting us up for a second season, because the drama has too much to cover to be spending time on ice cream dates.

  • Black: Episode 15black1500963a.jpg

Now that they’ve both admitted they like each other, Ha-ram and Black are free to enjoy adorable dates together. Except someone knows the truth about Black being a Reaper, which threatens to ruin his relationship with Ha-ram. Black also tries to figure out who is really behind all the deaths, and Soo-wan reaches her breaking point.

EPISODE 15 RECAP

black1500036a.jpg black1500056a.jpg

Ha-ram confesses to Black that the one she likes is him (or, to her eyes, Moo-gang). Then she kisses him, much to Black’s astonishment, which causes his Reaper tattoo to glow. Ha-ram’s mother, just arriving at Ha-ram’s place, sees Black’s tattoo. Mom recognizes the tattoo and wonders in fear why “that person†is now after Ha-ram.

Seon-young’s interview tape is leaked to the press. Man-soo is stunned to hear that his father, who he’s idolized, could have had sex with teenagers. Man-ho is also accused of murdering Jin-sook to cover it up, and his crimes further include the shady business dealings that meant buying the Mujin mall land from himself. Senator Nam is also implicated, his chances for presidency now squashed.

Man-soo meets with Man-ho, desperate to be told that the interview video is fake. Man-ho points out it would be silly to put a fake tape in a safety deposit box and keep it for twenty years. Man-ho blames Man-soo for the leak, since Man-soo was the one who opened the safe and gave the tape to the police.

black1500434a.jpg black1500402a.jpg

Man-ho also blames Man-soo for his arrest, since Man-ho didn’t know the butterfly watch his father gave him was related to something so seedy. Man-ho was the one who originally ordered the investigation into Scarface’s arson case, flagging the insurance request as fraud. But Chairman Oh made him sign the payout, anyway, much to Man-ho’s bewilderment.

Man-ho’s furious that all the work he did to keep Royal Group from being destroyed by Chairman Oh’s perverse actions was ignored, since the chairman planned to leave everything to Man-soo. Man-ho insists he didn’t kill Jin-sook — the only hit he ordered was the attack on Tiffany.

Man-soo retorts that Man-ho tried to kill him, too, but Man-ho says that wasn’t him. Even if Man-ho hated Man-soo, he couldn’t kill his own brother. He doesn’t know who attacked Man-soo. Man-ho then wonders if Man-soo purposefully accused Man-ho of murder and corruption, so that Man-soo would be arrested and Man-ho would inherit everything.

black1500561a.jpg

Man-soo dazedly walks through the police station and sees the evidence board with all the photos of the people related to the case that have been killed. Man-soo stares at it in disbelief, shocked to think that his father was responsible for their deaths — including the deaths of Ha-ram’s father and Joon.

Chief Bong is thrilled that today is his squad’s first day as Violent Crimes team, but he gets a call about Kwang-kyun, and his face suddenly becomes serious.

Leo thinks about the lie he told Kwang-kyun — that he grew up in America, even though he really lived in Mujin. Leo opens up his closet to pull out a book that says it belongs to Kim Woo-shik from Mujin Elementary School.

COMMENTS

Not only is there a third butterfly watch (*tears out hair*), but also a third video tape! I feel like I ought to be surprised that Congressman Kim is the Big Bad, but Man-ho seemed like too obvious a choice. Not that Man-ho is an angel by any means — he definitely deserves to rot in jail (after all, he’s knowingly covered up his father’s crimes and, while the other deaths aren’t attributable to him, he did try to have Tiffany killed. Plus we can never forget Sip-gyeong, RIP!).

I am furious, though, that all these deaths have been so that a man in power could become more powerful, all the while hiding the fact he raped an underage girl. Mostly I’m furious because it seems all too real. Maybe not the contract killings, but definitely the part about a man using his authority and public image to hush up the fact he sexually assaulted someone. I can understand why Soo-wan was so determined to not let anyone see the tape — she knew people were willing to kill over it. If she wanted to live, she had to continue to hide the truth. But if there was ever a time for Soo-wan to have her #metoo moment, it’s now. She might be risking her life, but at least she has Black on her side, so she’s no longer alone. Together they can fight to take down this bastard and reveal what a truly horrible man he is.

black1504711a.jpg

Of course, that all depends on them finding the tape, which Moo-gang knows about and that Ha-ram apparently has. Or had. But I doubt Ha-ram knows about how important the tape is, because if she had watched it, then she wouldn’t be so willing to support Congressman Kim. I had a brief thought that she hid it (unwatched) in the time capsule, thinking it would be a fun memory from Joon to unearth later. But if Moo-gang found the tape, then that obviously doesn’t make sense. Then again, if Moo-gang found the tape that day, I feel like it would have found it by now. There wasn’t much time for him to ditch it between the time he stopped by Ha-ram’s place and the time he got shot. Unless he left it with Leo — we know he visited Leo at the hotel, which is how Moo-gang ended up at the mall and was taken hostage in the first place.

Which brings us to Leo. Since he’s not connected to Man-ho or Chairman Oh (which has been the puzzler for the past few episodes), that means he’s connected to Congressman Kim. The obvious answer is that Leo is the congressman’s son. It would explain why Leo has a bunny charm similar to the one that was on the congressman’s bag, the one that Soo-wan ripped off and then left in the phone booth. It would also explain why he’s so addicted to drugs, because I can’t imagine his childhood was that great, knowing what his father was like. I’d want to escape reality as much as I could, too.

At least I can be satisfied that we finally have proof that Ha-ram’s father was a Reaper, and that she’s half-human, half-Reaper. I feel like that should give her a better chance with Black, at least better than the doom-and-gloom her mother is predicting. Her mother wasn’t a half-Reaper who’d lived with seeing Shadows all her life, so for Ha-ram to discover that the man she loves is a Reaper shouldn’t be as terrifying, right? I hope not, because I need more cute amusement park dates! Then again, it would mean putting off finding out what really happened to Joon, since, despite what all the characters believe right now, I’m not convinced that it was Joon’s body on the road. I do believe that Black is Joon’s missing soul, and once Joon’s body is found, it will mean that Black can move on to the afterlife. But is sacrificing the chance to be with the woman you love worth going to heaven?
