SweetiePatootie 800
When P101 revealed their eliminations would be based of audience votes, many were strongly against it and many proclaimed that 'only visuals would win!'. Now that we've had two groups formed from this system, do you think this statement still holds true? Are IOI and Wanna One only filled with visuals and less talented than ggs and bgs put together the conventional way?

foo 3,048
IOI was crazy talented. Sejeong and Yeonjung are two of the best new gen female vocals, Chungha is an amazing dancer, and Yoojung is a legit triple threat. Plus many more talented members that I didn't mention. Not really, companies sometimes make wrong assumptions and end up adding filler members who decreases the talent average and can't get popular either.. At least for fan voted projects they're bound to help one way or another.. And the final result is OK.. You get decent vocals, dancers, visuals, variety members and rappers and members who stand out in more than one or two areas ...
SweetiePatootie 800
they aren't less talented, they are less cohesive. How so? I follow both groups and there's definitely chemistry between the members. And why do you think normal groups are more cohesive, is it because they've trained together and knew each other for a longer time?

hess 3,578
actually leaving it up to public vote, they did a good job of getting a good mix of talent + visuals + charms they aren't less talented, they are less cohesive. tbh though, i think if you show clips of IOI/W1 performing mixed in with other permanent groups to someone who isn't familiar with them, they wouldn't be able to tell a difference in "cohesiveness". RenM 2,204
they aren't less talented, they are less cohesive. this is where most people were wrong, it's the opposite actually , they become cohesive and closer because they know they dont have much time. at least that's the case for I.O.I. thus what make their various variety appearance legendary. jjqueen 91
they aren't less talented, they are less cohesive. I can't really comment on how much more cohesive the groups are. But their fans are less cohesive, because they were built up as individual fanbases.

purple00rchid 1,403
I think the key difference is, public votes will reveal individuals with charisma/stage presence and likability. In that sense, other idol group might arguably be more talented, but they might not be able to pull the same amount of audience as oppose to the publicly-voted idol group. where my hood unnies at 4,967
depends on the scale tbh. in a show like produce 101 which has INSANE ratings from all age groups and genders, and a hundred contestants from various entertainment companies, of course a lot of talented gems will be discovered. imo both ioi and wanna1 are miles ahead of their peers. they have amazing vocals, dancers, variety skills and visuals to boot. what sets them apart from other new gen groups is that, like others have mentioned, they have no cohesive image. there are members meant to appeal to every demographic, so you have sexy, cute, fierce, elegant, funny etc. all in one group. on the downside this can make any concept they do feel a bit disjointed, since the mature members don't necessarily fit cute concepts and the cute members look really awkward doing mature concepts. on the flipside, that's also what makes them so charming and interesting as a group. but on a smaller scale like boys24 for example, where the viewers are made up of boy group stans, aka. teen girls, that's when visuals usually trump talent. lets not even talk about inner-company survival shows (win, mix n match, sixteen, no.mercy etc) as they're obviously rigged and predetermined from the start. it's basically just promo for groups that would debut in the end anyways. Lol BOYS24 aren't even small scaled, and the judges had more say in B24 than they did in P101. They're actually much more talented than Wanna One (when will P101 have a Hongin for example) but yknow, keep talking about things you have no clue about. mon chan 4,645
Nah both ioi and w1 are pretty well-rounded. One thing is mnet dont want a unskilled group as they dont have time to train after debut, so talented mems still got decent screentime to boost their popularity. They need a well rounded group w both talents (so they can pull off stage immediately w/o preparing) and visuals to attract fans.

아니 천사 2,260
I don't think anyone would ever claim that there would be less talent in the group. a group like IOI/W1 has their advantage, but the biggest problem is that most of the fans like individuals more so than the group. Most companies try to push the group as a unit at the beginning, however P101 creates a group from the popularity of individual. They become popular for a reason, so of course they'll want to highlight that aspect in the group. Which creates some disjointed aspects of the group.
