''Anne (titled Anne with an E on Netflix) is a Canadian television series based on the 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, and adapted by Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Moira Walley-Beckett. It airs on CBC in Canada, and elsewhere in the world it is available for streaming on Netflix. The first season consists of seven episodes, with Niki Caro directing the 90-minute season premiere. The series premiered on March 19, 2017, on CBC, the season finale airing on April 30, 2017.

On August 3, 2017 both the CBC and Netflix renewed the series for a 10-episode second season in 2018.''

I couldn't find an official thread so I made one dave.png

Cute series, very well acted and directed, but I wish this version didn't make the classmates so evil. They don't bully Anne in the books, they found her charming.

Yes, but I think the creators said they want to make it darker than the books. "In this day and age, themes of identity, prejudice, bullying, being an outsider, searching for a way to be accepted and how to belong are entirely topical and super relevant, and those are themes that are built into the story of 'Anne."

But anyway, I hope that they won't make ''if guy bullies you then it means he likes you'' (that Billy guy). wthplz.png

The adaption was ok. I watched the first season and will watch the 2nd, considering I'm a big fan of AOGG. The only thing I didn't like was how at times, it strays away from the books / essence of the AOGG world. In the new adaptation, there were even instances where they seem to suggest that Anna is mentally unstable?! o.O And some of the dialogue is too modern-sounding.

The one in the 80's with Megan Fellows is still the best IMO.

I read the books, I saw the original series (and try to ignore the mess of the later seasons). And I ADORE this version of Anne.

Yes, she is a bit unstable and her classmates consider her weird but that's good. In the books, everything was entirely too super duper nice right from the get go (apart from marilla, who was also written very realistically and a few others imo).

I like the Anne who is weird and who slowly gains acceptance by the others. It's more believeable this way. And considering how much she has been through, it's okay to see her as a bit unstable. Granted, they showed this plenty and I hope they won't do much more with that but apart from a few moments of cringe, it was well done. I also like the addition of the French farmhand. And Gilbert is more fleshed out, though his story changed a lot. In the originals, it is like "this is Gilbert, he is essentially perfect, period" whereas in the series you understand better why.

Can't wait for the 2nd season.

I'm so glad they made this into a TV series. I love AoGG, and the first season of this was great! I like most of the changes they made from the books, and seeing a slightly unstable Anne is interesting.I can't wait for the second season!

I finally got around to watching the series this weekend.  I liked it more than I thought I would, especially since I love the '84 version.

I don't know if anyone else here is familiar with the spin-off show of '84 version, Road to Avonlea, but the station master from the first two episode of Anne is played by the same actor who played the manager of White Sands Hotel in Road to Avonlea

My thoughts on the series (spoilers ofc):

- I like the more realistic take on the story, with exploring her backstory & trauma as well as the historical accuracy ( i don't mind the fact that the show is set twenty years ahead of the original, which is set in the 1870s, from what I read)

- Diana's character is my favourite, she's even sweeter than the original imo.  To bad her family is a lot more bitchy than the original.  The entire of Avonlea is a lot more dickheaded than the original, idk how to feel about it

- I love the inclusion of Jerry's character! The Francophones in the Maritimes are sorely under-represented (the books don't treat the francophones of the Island well at all, which was the norm there I guess)

- I liked the arc with the Gillis homestead fire, which isn't in the original, but I enjoyed it since it helped Ruby and Anne get closer

- I liked the fact that they addressed the teacher-student relationship with Mr. Phillips and Prissy Andrews, which is creepy despite it being normal in that era

- I'm surprised that Aunt Josephine was in a Boston marriage - I think? That's how I interpreted it.  I liked it, it's an interesting addition

- I preferred the Marilla and Mrs. Lynde from the original book/movie compared to the Marilla & Mrs. Lynde of this version.  Marilla wasn't as calm and reserved in this version and Mrs. Lynde is no where near as jolly and lovable as she is in the original.

- I honestly don't get why they had to make Gilbert an orphan.  I get that they have creative liberties since it's an adaptation but this seems so pointless to me.

- Talking about Gil, I feel like him and Anne barely have any chemistry.  Anne has more chemistry with Jerry imo, but i think this is mostly due to the fact Gil doesn't have much screentime with Anne.  Then again, Jonathan Crombie's Gilbert is hard to forget :hehe:

- I did find the series a tad too dramatic, like the broach situation and Mathew trying to commit suicide, like really?  Mathew's suicide thing lowkey pissed me off, don't ask me why

- The way the series finishes is underwhelming and unsatisfying.  It doesn't make me need a second season, it doesn't even incite curiosity to see how she'll handle the thief guy she's clearly crushing on.  But I wouldn't mind a second season.
