When chavez came, Venezuela were promising since they have oil but they got greedy and bit more than they can chew. They loaned heavily on the assumption and promise of oil and oil only, they didn't have any industry nor invested outside of there oil. Which swelled the inflation to the stars. Then came maduro and basically didn't do anything that tanked economy more by loaning to China in exchange of there oil as export, loaning would be good if they can pay it but they can't, now the government is bankrupt and still have loans to China. PDVSA can't even export oil because it doesn't have money so the oil tankers are currently sitting in Caribbean... They can't even use there own oil that is there only export to help there economy.
