If JRR Tolkien's The Silmarillion Got A Television Show Adaption...

Recommended Posts

Do you think it would work? It's been a while since I've read Tolkien's works but I just thought about this again now. For those of you who don't know about Tolkien or The Silmarillion, JRR Tolkien aka John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (January 3, 1892-September 2, 1973), was the author behind The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings. His final work The Silmarillion was meant to be a prequel of the entire series. Unfortunately he passed away before he was able to officially finish it, but was published on his behalf kinda. It's too big and complex to be a movie or series of movies. I'd personally would get annoyed if Peter Jackson (aka the director/producer of the Hobbit & LOTR movies) did titles such as "The Silmarillion 2" or "The Silmarillion 7" so that's why I see it better as an HBO or Netflix series.

At this point I'm just being a nerd and giving my 2 cents. I already know this is a long read so I'm letting you guys know that beyond this point is optional.

I strongly feel it would rival Game of Thrones and there'd be a "which is better" thing among the fandoms, like a Coke vs. Pepsi, Team Edward or Team Jacob, Mac vs. PC type of thing. Just from the fact that it's Tolkien the show would be big. I also believe lt'd be longer than the GOT series. GOT is on is last season, ending with a total of 7 but as I'm picturing The Silmarillion as a show there's probably be 20 or something. I think it would be a success. However there are a list cons I'm personally keeping in mind.
  • The Silmarillion is one of the hardest books to read ever because it's a mythos story of the world rather than the characters in it. When I read it I've often confuse names of characters with names of places and until I listened to class lectures (yes I took a course entirely on Tolkien in my university) I was able to make sense, and it was through my professor's lectures that I understood how epic it was. So because it's difficult to read, would it be difficult to watch?
  • Tolkien was not a fan of visual adaptions of his works, even his descendants say so. Tolkien was only alive (I think) for the LOTR animations but was already dead by the time Peter Jackson came into the picture. However Christopher Tolkien and the rest of the Tolkien family said that he has a specific idea on how Arda is like so even if he was alive to see the more recent live action films he wouldn't be crazy about it. Also because Tolkien was not a fan of adaptions there would be a disapproval among some fans. Some don't even like the Peter Jackson films because of this.
But again I feel it would be awesome if done right.

It wouldn't work, The Silmarillion I think is for those who are really fans of the Tolkien World, those who ended the saga and wanted more, but it would be like adapting the bible, it has too many mythological references from it's own creation, and even an invented language, that's hardcore for someone who wants to go to see a movie a sunday

I haven't read the book yet but I will in the future. I actually wouldn't mind a tv show adaptation, I think it would be really cool (only if it's done right). There aren't a lot of (good) fantasy shows out there (excluding Game Of Thrones), so I think it would be cool to have a tv show about it. But I wouldn't want Peter Jackson to be involved in it (look what he did to The Hobbit). But it sounds really complex (how you put it) and it probably does have a lot of content and I think it would be hard to make into a tv show/movie. But A Song of Ice and Fire was turned into a tv show and that's pretty complex and I'm surprised that they actually managed to turn it into a show in the first place...
