like it only happens when i shut off the lights to sleep...i'll be trying to fall asleep, but then i suddenly feel like i can't breathe or like i'm choking. it's super weird and only happens in the dark, at night, or in the shower

sometimes, i wake up from dreams and feel like i can't swallow, like i'm choking...it happens when i wake up or when i'm in the dark

in the shower too, because of the water i guess, i'll randomly feel like i'm suffocating

i know i'm not the only one so i was wondering if any OH members did

You might have sleep apnea.

Please go get it checked out.

It happens to me like once every year. But yeah it feels like you're choking to death, so scary.

It's not normal if it happens do you often tho. Like are you anxious lately or something.

not more than usual

yeah it's scary af :\ i wonder why it happens, and it seems like it happens to most people, just less frequently. google didn't tell me anything useful

Not really I just recently found out I have a panic disorder. Probably from something traumatic in the past. Panic disorder has the same symptoms as heart attacks. Also I have asthma which makes it seven worst. I went three times to the hospital because I swore I had a heart attack my heart got tested 3 times because I was suffering from fast heart beat, pain in the chest, difficulties to breathe and pain in my left arm but there was never anything wrong with my heart. I used to always get these attacks and get paranoid that I will die from a heart attack but these were actually just symptoms of panic attacks. I could never search for medical help because it's too stigmatized here. I usually just try to breathe very slowly, calm down and tell myself that I am not going to die its just a panic attack.

Back then I couldn't even sleep because I was afraid to die when I had a panic attack in the middle of the night but now that I am aware it's a lot better.

that sounds absolutely terrifying i'm so sorry u have to go through that, i'm rlly glad that it's better now that ur aware of it

idk if you've tried this or if it will help but my therapist gave me this tip it's called '5 senses' where you do this: 1st, you name 5 things you can see. then you name 4 things you can touch (and actually touch them) and describe what they feel like. then name 3 things you can hear. then name 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste (all of these things have to be in the same room that you're in).

idk if it will help w/ panic attacks, but it helps ground you and kinda remind you where you are, i use it when i dissociate/get floaty/etc maybe it can help, but probably not, i'm sorry i hope someday you can find a way to see a doctor without the stigma around it

Thanks I will try it but I once saw an episode of the doctors that talked about panic disorders. They were treating a patient the best way is to tell yourself "I am not going to die its just a panic attack" or "I am okay there is nothing wrong with me" like a mantra kinda like trying to convince yourself. You should also lay down and take deep breathes. It works for me I usually calm down after 10-20 minutes. Back then when I didn't know it's a panic disorder I didn't know how to treat it usually people who have a panic attack think they have a heart attack.

I have irregular breathing and I feel like I can't breathe when I'm nervous (mostly when talking to authoritative figures who scare me). It felt like my lungs didn't fully expand, or my breaths were really shallow and shaky.

I started doing yoga and meditation last year and it really helped. I've been really stressed recently and have been meaning to pick it up again. I recommend. Apparently I had been having panic attacks and didn't even know, so you might be having them too. Even if you don't suffer from panic attacks, its worth a try just for some self-care smile.png
