this discussion started ever since the trailer of the show and i've been thinking about suicide and how it's portrayed in the media a lot.

personally i think it glamorizes suicide, it makes it seem like this almost romantic thing, especially bc she left behind tapes so she got 'the last word', unfortunately most of the times it doesn't happen this way...

discuss, pls

Idk if people are so influenceable by a tv show to commit suicide I think that other factors also trigger them? What I mean is If a show alone increases the changes of you committing suicide, who says other things cant trigger that same person? Like a bad break up? Extreme stress etc

No. I don't think so. She got nothing out of her suicide, it also didn't look pretty, it showed her parents' grief and helplessness. If she had committed suicide at the height of her life (like some people do because they feel nothing will be better than a certain moment) or to be with the person she loved and if her wrists hadn't been gashed so hideously, then maybe I would think so, but nah. It was just gross, frustrating, and sad. It also showed the thoughtlessness and single-mindedness of individuals, even the ones who are trying to be good/nice.

No, but it doesn't deal with the mental health aspect of suicide. Plus the suicide scene seemed unnecessarily graphic.

My biggest problem was that it didn't address the actual mental side of suicide/depression. I think that could have been better done.

No. For the entire series, the living characters are either sad about hannah's death or angry that she exposes them in her tapes. There's no episode that shows the positive impact of hannah's suicide to any character including hannah herself

ehhh in a way yeah the biggest thing is the fact they didnt even have a discussion about mental illness it was just "clay killed hannah because he didnt tell her he loved her" which is utter bullshit

Hannah addressed that Clay staying with her even when she told him to leave most likely wouldn't have saved her though since she was already in a dark place and while he made her feel better temporarily it didn't really stick...

i mean i know that which is why on clay's tape she said it wasn't negative it was positive (but still leaving someone that can fuck them up) but they still had that whole scene where clay was like "did i kill hannah baker" and tony said "yes" and then the scene with the principal and he said it again and it just really rubbed me by the end they reduced it to nothing more than a tragic love story between clay and hannah

have you watched love shuffle, one girl decided to commit suicide, but didn't do it, because she saw how people were sad over her suicide, but eventually they would forget about her. I like that better than 13rw because 13rw tells people how suicide can have such POWER, impact or influences to everyone around them, which I guess many suicider hope for from their deaths
