Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

  • Temperature of Love: I’m confused as what Kim Jae-wook is planning to do as a romantic rival, but maybe I’ve never understood second leads of this type. I’ve been enjoying Temperature of Love for its lack of drama up till now, so I’m a little wary of what’s around the bend, but let’s cross our fingers and hope for reason to prevail.

  • Temperature of Love: Episodes 19-20TempofLove19-20-00048.jpg

Just as things seem to be calming down for Jung-sun and Hyun-soo both personally and professionally, a new threat emerges that could ruin everything. With the danger coming from the last place they’d ever expect it, they’ll have to decide if they’re willing to fight for what they want, whether that’s their careers, or each other.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

While Hyun-soo and Jung-sun share kisses in Good Soup’s walk-in refrigerator, Jung-woo drives to Hyun-soo’s house. Seeing her lights on, he tries to call her, but there’s no answer.

A little while later, Jung-sun and Hyun-soo go to his apartment for tea, and Hyun-soo mentions Jung-sun’s mother. Jung-sun says that he was curious about their meeting, but he didn’t ask about it because he didn’t want to make Hyun-soo uncomfortable. He admits that his mother is difficult, and he has a complicated family past.

Hyun-soo confesses that if she’d met his mother before she fell in love with him, she’d have run away. But she says that meeting her after falling for him just makes her love him more, because she feels sympathy. Jung-sun’s smile fades, so Hyun-soo asks if he doesn’t like hearing that, but he smiles again and says that love plus sympathy is just adding to the love.

TempofLove19-20-00052.jpg

He takes Hyun-soo’s hand and tells her in the exact same words she said to him, “I love you. I’m in love with you.†She repeats his words back to him: “I know.†They share a little smooch, then Jung-sun moves in to deepen the kiss, but the phone rings right on cue, making them both laugh.

Jung-woo is downstairs in his car when Jung-sun walks Hyun-soo out. They don’t notice him, and he watches as Hyun-soo trips and falls, and Jung-sun offers to help her up, asking cheekily if she wants to hold hands.

The following day, Hyun-soo and Kyung head to Good Soup to do research for her new drama. Hyun-soo struggles to pedal her bike with Kyung on the back, as Kyung insists that walking would be faster, hee.

TempofLove19-20-00076.jpg

They interview Soo-jung, the sommelier, who tells them that she learned about wine by drinking what her customers left behind, on top of spending all her paychecks on wine. Next they talk to chef Ha-sung, who says that the toughest thing about studying overseas was that he couldn’t make Korean food because his roommates didn’t like the smell. Grumpy chef Kyung-soo says he likes all food, but he complains that Ha-sung looks down on him.

Later Hyun-soo goes to the roof to talk to Jung-sun, where she gets a call from Jung-woo to meet for lunch. Over sandwiches, Jung-woo says that he sent the script for Nice Soup Does Not Answer the Phone to a famous actress, and Hyun-soo gets excited.

But she immediately wilts, sure that the actress won’t be in her drama because she’s a nobody writer. She perks up again when Jung-woo says that the actress can’t star in the drama due to her schedule, but that she wants to meet with Hyun-soo. Jung-woo teases her for being so happy, but Hyun-soo thinks it’s a promising start.

COMMENTS

Oh, this is going to be very, very bad. I feel like a kid peeking through my fingers at a scary movie, unable to look but dying to know what happens next. But I’ll get back to this in a minute.

At first I couldn’t understand why Hong-ah keeps hanging around Hyun-soo, trying to win her favor back, when Hong-ah admits that she hates Hyun-soo for “stealing†the guy she likes and being successful first. Then I realized… it’s so that Hong-ah doesn’t have to feel like the bad guy. She knows that her behavior towards Hyun-soo was wrong, both regarding Jung-sun and in almost taking over her drama, but if Hyun-soo doesn’t hate her for it then she doesn’t have to hate herself for it. So Hong-ah keeps kissing up, buying Hyun-soo gifts and pouting at her, hoping to crack Hyun-soo’s chilly wall so that she can tell herself that if Hyun-soo forgives her, then what she did can’t be that bad.

And although one of Hyun-soo’s best qualities is her ability to to forgive, I’m glad that in this situation, she’s holding firm. She knows that Hong-ah has no right to her friendship or forgiveness after what she’s done and the way she’s behaved. I like that Hyun-soo was honest and said that she needs time to work through her feelings about the way Hong-ah lied and tried to keep her and Jung-sun apart. She doesn’t even know the half of what Hong-ah is doing behind her back with her new drama, but she’s on her guard, which is going to help her stay strong when she discovers that Hong-ah is still backstabbing her professionally.

TempofLove19-20-00268.jpg

On the other hand, I don’t understand Jung-woo at all. He obviously loves Jung-sun, and holds no real hatred towards him for loving Hyun-soo. So I can’t comprehend why he put Jung-sun in the position of making his proposal meal for Hyun-soo, knowing how much Jung-sun (and Hyun-soo, for that matter) would be hurt when they discover how he set them up. In a way I can see why Jung-woo would try to get his proposal in there first, because of what the two men discussed regarding wanting to know they tried everything they possibly could to win the heart of the woman they love. Jung-woo is hoping that Hyun-soo may realize that she does have some feelings for him, and you can’t blame a guy for trying.

But the way he’s going about it seems calculated to cause the most distress possible to the two people Jung-woo says he cares about most in the world. Not to mention that he’s risking looking like a heartless bastard in the process. All through this episode it seemed to me as if Jung-woo knew that this proposal is futile, because he looked downright miserable at a time when a man should be happy to be planning his future with the woman he loves. At this point it’s as if he’s only doing it to stick it to Jung-sun and Hyun-soo, and I just don’t get it.

Even with Jung-woo’s secrecy, I really appreciate that Hyun-soo knows how Jung-woo feels—she’s not blind to the obvious cues, and he isn’t exactly trying to hide his feelings. It’s refreshing that for the most part, everyone in this drama is working with the full knowledge of who is feeling what (with the exception of Kyung and Joon-ha). I particularly love how Hyun-soo handles Jung-woo’s feelings for her… she’s gentle with him because he’s her boss and because she cares for him as a friend, but she doesn’t ever lead him on or do anything to make him think that she returns his affections in that way.

I have no idea what’s going to happen now that Jung-woo has sprung his trap, but whatever it is, it won’t be good. If Jung-woo, Jung-sun, and Hyun-soo just had friendly connections, that would be bad enough. But Jung-woo has the power to professionally destroy both Hyun-soo and Jung-sun, and if he’s as angry as I think he is, he’s going to threaten to use every bit of that leverage to get his way. He’s always seemed like the kind of man who would be more than willing to crush anyone who stands in his way despite his friendly demeanor. The way his proposal was calculated to have as much impact as possible on Jung-sun and Hyun-soo, I have no doubt that Jung-woo is prepared to bring his full fury down on them both.

  • Temperature of Love: Episodes 21-22temperature1922-00100.jpg

Today’s episode is a lot more fun than I was expecting, considering how we left things. We get a little break from the drama to learn more about our characters and their histories, providing some much-needed insight to what makes them tick. I wish we’d had this information several weeks ago, but better late than never, I suppose.

EPISODE 21 RECAP

TempofLove21-22-00007.jpg TempofLove21-22-00008.jpg

When Jung-woo introduces Jung-sun to Hyun-soo as “the woman I like the most,†Jung-sun immediately understands that Hyun-soo is the woman Jung-woo intends to propose to. Hyun-soo tells Jung-sun that she didn’t know they’d be coming here, but Jung-sun just goes inside to have the kitchen start serving their dinner.

Hyun-soo thinks that Jung-sun is upset because she canceled their plans to have dinner with Jung-woo. She informs Jung-woo that Jung-sun is the man she fell in love with and lost, and that they recently found each other again. Jung-woo ignores her as if she hadn’t even spoken.

TempofLove21-22-00032.jpg

He only responds when she mentions meeting the famous actress who’s interested in her script. But he complains that her attempt at conversation feels like an obligation, which she admits, but she says nervously that something feels strange.

When it’s time for Jung-sun to bring out the special cake and engagement ring, he hesitates. He goes to the roof with the cake, which Hyun-soo instantly recognizes, since she helped design it and knows it’s intended to be a proposal cake. Jung-woo notes that there’s something missing, and Jung-sun asks to speak with him privately. While she’s waiting alone, staring at the proposal cake, Hyun-soo’s mother calls. They don’t talk about anything important, but just hearing her mother’s voice say that her dinner companion was rude to leave her alone during dinner makes Hyun-soo feel better.

The guys go to Jung-sun’s apartment, where Jung-sun returns Jung-woo’s ring. He says that Hyun-soo is the girlfriend he was going to introduce to Jung-woo today, and Jung-woo reveals that Hyun-soo is the woman he’s been talking about since his visit to Jung-sun in Paris. Jung-sun asks if she knew that Jung-woo was planning to propose, since she didn’t seem to understand what was happening. Jung-woo confirms that she didn’t, so Jung-sun asks the obvious question: “How did you think of proposing to her without sharing any feelings with each other?â€

TempofLove21-22-00071.jpg TempofLove21-22-00082.jpg

Jung-woo insists that he has good reason for his proposal, since all the time that Jung-sun wasn’t with her, he was. He says that for years he never saw her date anyone, and that he knew she held someone in her heart, but that man was never there. He continues that he liked the way she cherished her feelings, and hoped that someday she would feel the same for him.

Jung-sun grasps for a way to give Jung-woo the benefit of the doubt, asking if he knew that Hyun-soo was his girlfriend. But Jung-woo dashes his hopes and admits that he already knew.

Incredulous, Jung-sun asks why Jung-woo gave him that ring and had him prepare the proposal dinner. Jung-woo says without a shred of remorse that he wanted Jung-sun to feel the pain he felt when he found out about him and Hyun-soo. He admits that Jung-sun did nothing wrong, then adds, “But I’m angry at you because I can’t get angry at Hyun-soo.â€

COMMENTS

I felt like Jung-woo’s proposal wouldn’t be enough to come between Jung-sun and Hyun-soo, and I’m so happy to see that I was right. They sat down and discussed it like reasonable adults, and realized that Jung-woo’s delusion doesn’t have to be a problem for their relationship. It’s the moms’ instant and intense dislike for each other that concerns me now—mommy issues do have a real chance of causing a rift between them, since their moms can do a lot to make their lives miserable if they decide they hate each other. I’m particularly worried for Jung-sun, who’s just finally found a tentative peace with his mother. But we all know she can flip over to batcrap crazy at a moment’s notice, and when she does, she’s highly unpredictable. She likes Hyun-soo now, but how will she feel if she takes a dislike to Hyun-soo’s mom?

I really don’t feel like I understand Jung-woo any more even after he’s explained why he chose to propose to Hyun-soo knowing that she loves another man. Everything he said in his defense makes no sense whatsoever. He told Jung-sun that he admired Hyun-soo’s unwavering loyalty for the man she loved and didn’t see for five years, and that he wanted it for himself. But if she dropped that loyalty for another man, then wouldn’t that make her… well, disloyal? Then Jung-woo told Hyun-soo that he wanted to show her that she could trust him and depend on him, but how could she ever trust a man who betrayed his best friend in such an underhanded way?

I can’t tell if this is just Jung-woo’s odd character, or that the writer wanted to create a certain scenario—the proposal—and was trying to find ways to justify it and coming up short. I want to think the former, because everything else in this show is so cleanly written.

temperature1922-00136.jpg

Either way, Jung-woo is going off the deep end with his accusations of Jung-sun keeping his feelings for Hyun-soo to himself. It’s as if he thinks that Jung-sun’s keeping Hyun-soo’s identity a secret is something he was purposely doing. Jung-sun kept it to himself because he was heartbroken and sad, but Jung-woo kept the fact that he was having feelings for Hyun-soo a secret, too. And he’s the one who continued to keep it to himself, even after knowing about Jung-sun and Hyun-soo’s relationship, and he even used the information to deliberately hurt Jung-sun. If anyone was keeping the secret for mean-spirited reasons, it was Jung-woo.

But I want to talk about the side couples for once, now that they’re finally getting a bit of air time. I feel like Soo-jung’s crush on Won-joon came out of nowhere, but it’s so cute I don’t even care. He deserves a good woman, or really any woman that isn’t Hong-ah, to be perfectly frank. Soo-jung was adorable the way she stood up for Won-joon to Hong-ah’s face, then told him boldly that her confession wasn’t a lie. I hope that Won-joon pays attention and realizes what he could be missing out on while he pines after a girl who is flat-out telling him that she’ll never date him. I just hope that Hong-ah’s sudden jealousy now that she may not have Won-joon wrapped around her finger doesn’t mean that she has some sort of late-game epiphany and gets him in the end—after the way she’s behaved, I couldn’t care less if she gets a guy, much less a great guy she’s never appreciated.

And I know that Joon-ha is super annoying, but I love how he and Kyung bicker constantly when they’re together, and the fact that they have no clue that they like each other. They’re both just so odd and quirky, they’re perfect for each other. Thank goodness that while Hyun-soo, Jung-sun, and Jung-woo’s love triangle starts to veer off into melodramatic territory, we have two cute couples to watch fall in love with no higher stakes than who confesses first.

As strong as their feelings are for each other, our couple is still getting to know one another, and Hyun-soo especially is discovering that Jung-sun has a lot of closely guarded secrets. As Jung-woo begins to wield his money and power to shake them up, they’ll have to open up to each other lot more if they have any hope of surviving Jung-woo’s machinations with their relationship intact.

EPISODE 23 RECAP

TempofLove23-24-00017.jpg

Jung-sun and Hyun-soo enter the Good Soup dining room to find themselves unexpectedly facing down both Hyun-soo’s parents and Jung-sun’s mother. Although unaware that the two moms were just giving each other some pretty intense side-eye, they can feel the tension in the room.

Hyun-soo rushes to greet Jung-sun’s mother, while Kyung rescues Jung-sun by beckoning him over to meet Hyun-soo’s parents. He introduces himself, only for Hyun-soo to run over and nervously introduce him all over again, hee. Hyun-soo’s father is charmed, while her mother still looks uncomfortable.

Hyun-soo stage-whispers to her parents to go say hello to Jung-sun’s mother, but there’s a bit of confusion over who should greet the other first, so her dad takes the initiative. The moms look horribly awkward throughout the introductions, and Hyun-soo’s mother makes her disapproval pretty obvious, but they all manage to live through it.

temperature2324-01.jpg

Joon-ha visits Jung-woo to ask if it’s true that he’s going to hire Director Min to direct Hong-ah’s drama. Jung-woo says that Director Min only failed with Unruly Detectives because he overextended himself trying to raise his status and his paycheck, and his failure means he can be hired for cheap. He adds that he didn’t lose money on Unruly Detectives despite it getting an episode cut, making Joon-ha marvel that he has good luck with everything but love. Oops.

Jung-woo just asks how the scripts are going for Hyun-soo’s new drama. Joon-ha says that the story is much brighter now that the ending changed, which he approves of, but Jung-woo isn’t happy.

Back at Good Soup, Hyun-soo’s parents love Jung-sun’s food, and he comes out of the kitchen to ask them to visit again after the menu changes. They stop to say goodbye to Jung-sun’s mom and Daniel on their way out, which is again terribly uncomfortable because Hyun-soo’s mom stops her husband from giving Daniel a handshake.

TempofLove23-24-00106.jpg TempofLove23-24-00111.jpg

Jung-sun offers to comp their meal, but Dad says that he paid in advance because he guessed Jung-sun would do that. Jung-sun motions to Hyun-soo that he’ll call her later, and after they all go, he breathes for the first time all afternoon.

Jung-woo goes over a proposal to improve the business at Good Soup, as it’s looking like Jung-sun won’t be able to do it himself by the deadline. He shows the proposal to Jung-sun, who objects, since this is against their agreement to let him run the restaurant as he sees fit.

But in honor of their friendship, Jung-sun reluctantly agrees to let Jung-woo get involved. He reminds Jung-woo that he’s always been sincere with him, looking frustrated.

COMMENTS

I can see where this is going, and I don’t like it one bit. I’m afraid that Jung-sun is now going to think that punching Jung-woo means that his relationship with Hyun-soo is turning him into a violent man like his father, and he’ll try to end things on those grounds. Which will mean that Jung-woo won, at least in his pursuit to break up Jung-sun and Hyun-soo, not that I think Hyun-soo would ever date him in a million years at this point. I just want to tell Jung-sun that one punch doesn’t make you the same as an abuser, not in these circumstances.

Of course violence is awful, but Jung-woo was goading him into it—he wanted Jung-sun to hit him. It’s not wrong to pop one good one to the guy who’s trying to ruin your whole life. But Jung-sun won’t see it that way—his tendency is to turn everything around on himself, and blame himself for the situation. He’s going to think that love made him into a violent man, therefore he doesn’t deserve love.

And the more Jung-woo explains his actions, the less I understand him. I said before that I was hoping that it could be chalked up to his character, but now I’m starting to feel like the writer just maybe can’t think of a good reason why someone would try to break up his two best friends and ruin their professional lives, while still claiming to love them both, which is why Jung-woo’s explanations make no sense. As I said before, I can understand why he would watch Hyun-soo hold steady in her love for a man for five years, and wish he had that same devotion. And I can understand why he would feel hurt and resentful to find out that not only is that man back in her life, but it’s his best friend.

TempofLove23-24-00546.jpg

But I don’t know why a man who is as intelligent as Jung-woo doesn’t see that if he could convince Hyun-soo to drop Jung-sun and be with him instead, that would completely negate that loyalty he says he covets so much. Yes, it sucks for Jung-woo that he waited for years hoping that Hyun-soo’s love would fade and she would look at him. But that’s not what happened, and a man who truly loved her would be able to see that he lost and let her go be happy.

Because that’s the thing that really gets to me… Jung-woo claims to want Hyun-soo, but I can’t remember him ever saying he loves her. He’s said that he wants her devotion for himself, and that he admires her. But he’s never acted like he loves her, and they’ve kept their relationship mostly professional with occasional bouts of friendly behavior, but no more than that. So even though he promised he would respect her request not to pursue her, it seems like in five years, he never even tried. Not until he suddenly had competition and apparently lost his mind for fear of losing something he never even had.

I think that Hyun-soo’s mother is being pretty judgmental about Jung-sun’s mom, and I’m going to be very disappointed in her if she makes trouble for Hyun-soo and Jung-sun. I’m not defending Jung-sun’s mother, because I still think she’s a manipulator who will lie even to her own son to get what she wants. But Hyun-soo’s mother doesn’t know any of that—she made a snap judgment based on nothing but the woman’s appearance, and the fact that she’s dating a younger man (something her own daughter is doing, by the way!). I think it’s really closed-minded of Hyun-soo’s mother to imply that she would object to Hyun-soo and Jung-sun’s relationship if they got engaged, when she knows two, maybe three incomplete pieces of information about his mother.

And speaking of hypocrites, Hong-ah again. How dare she get on Won-joon’s case about being with one person and liking another, with all the things she’s done in the name of her own unrequited “love†for Jung-sun? And while I’m glad that Won-joon is standing up to her, I was really disappointed that he didn’t even give Soo-jung a chance before letting her down, and in front of Hong-ah! Then at lunch, I didn’t like the chirpy music that went along with Hong-ah’s continued spoiled-brat behavior, as if we’re supposed to think it’s cute when she’s doing it to a guy who likes her. No, it’s not cute. And she doesn’t deserve to get a great guy just because she doesn’t like seeing him with someone else, when she’s taken him for granted and used him shamelessly for nearly a decade. That’s not how love works.
