Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

THE B4. go check.

Nice placement.

Is EunJung above Sunny ?

Same level, I'd say.

Please elaborate. I actually thought Hyomin was slightly better than Eunjung... What is your tier system and what do you base your opinion on?

Well she's nasal 100% of the time, she supports B4s/C5s better than Hyomin, never sung with an open throat, she's a yeller and poor intonation really.

(BTW Vocals isn't an opinion, I just need to stress that point)

Yes it is. You build your opinion based on the amount of informatin you have. That's what I asked.

Ok, it isn't an opinion because it isn't based on our personal tastes or views. We watch videos are check the list of criteria:

  • Placement
  • Support
  • Intonation
  • Consistency
  • Articulation

^ The list is then broken down into sub-categories, the analysis' may change with given time if the vocalist in question has improved or deteriorated or if more material of them has occurred. But it isn't an opinion, it's wholly objective.

Oh yea vocal heads......whose the better singer in 15&? Unless they are both somehow mediocre

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lI27h_Kp_4&feature=player_embedded

Jimin. She's OK up until C#5, and then she goes messy. She has better support, stability, and placement than Yerin, but Yerin has a better sense of musicianship.

i think i read it already i not sure if it is here or in the vocal thread in akp but i think it'll be hard to find so can someone tell me where soyeon raina gayoon jiyoon stand as vocalists? like below such or between such and such. sorry if this has been answered before

Soyeon (same level as Tiffany) > Raina  > Gayoon > Jiyoon

Hey, Regina, I just watched that video of Baekhyun singing in the Philippines and guess what? Boi didn't resonate or come close to it, he was just yelling.

Here's what real resonance sounds like:

Girl is a resonance whore.

But has Soyeon? Also if Hyomin has achieved head voice should't she be ahead of Eunjung and Soyeon? Or has Soyeon done it too?

PS: If that means "take a bow", it's an expression to someone who has done something well - not someone you want to insult

None of them have resonated or achieved head voice, AhMin throws that word around a lot. He meant to see falsetto

It means take a seat lol.

IC (to both)

And to the others who posted too, cba quoting everyone. This is the first time I heard about middle voice. All I'd seen before was "nasality", "mask voice" and "head voice".

Middle voice is also known as the comfort zone or tessitura, and we say mask placement not mask voice.

Head voice and falsetto has a different. Big different is the volume. Head voice is loud, falsetto is soft. Head voice, you need to focus upward which BoA alway demonstrate. It is alway loud. Falsetto, your focus is between your eyes and upward. You wanna go high pitch but you do not wanna go loud. You can even sing C6 note or above and try both ways.

That's bullshit. Head voice is a full tone and has no airiness, falsetto is unhealthy and is airy. BoA doesn't have a head voice.

falsetto doesn't have to be unhealthy does it? or even airy....if it's trained well.

It's always unhealthy even if someone uses it better than someone else, the airiness eventually wears the cords down. For example, Mariah's singing deteriorated because her constant (stylistic) use of a falsetto.

this is a cover of davichi's 8282 by girls day minah and sojin. who is the better vocalist between the 2?

PS how do i make the video viewable in my post and not just a link

how far is she from becoming a decent singer?or is she smack down mediocre?

Never listen to Kongwee.

I know taemin is now up there in terms of vocals but he's still far from kyu right?

Yes. The gap between Kyuhyun and Taemin is quite big.

So in terms of resonance, I've been trying to discern the (audible, not technical definition) difference between loud vs resonant - would it be incorrect to make the analogy that when a singer resonates it's like the vibrating wine glass effect in your ears (powerful, makes my ears tingle sometimes when i'm listening to someone resonate), or am I completely off base?

What do you think of this person's singing? (keeping him anon for now)  At what time points is he clearly resonating vs just singing loudly?

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1VBdnhOSOYV

Thanks for feedback

When someone is resonating you hear this ringing/pinging sound in their belts, that's how I like to describe it, but your analogy fits.

That guy sounded like he belongs on Broadway or voicing a Disney character, he has such a musical vibrato lmao (I really like his voice). Erm I didn't really hear any resonance.

Ah, that's because he IS a musicals singer :P  He's my cousin, sings on and off Broadway depending on the musical.  You can tell by his vibrato and by his super-clear/almost exaggerated enunciation too, imho.  When I was listening to this performance I kept saying to myself, "Is this resonance?  Or is he just increasing his volume?"  I really can't tell at this point -_-.  I listened to Sohyun singing and I had trouble figuring out the parts where she was being resonant too.

It's the diction. So clear, every word is decipherable lol. His tone is really nice though. Oh you mean Sohyang? Look out for this pinging sound in her belts (she's resonant most of the time though). Listen to Taeyeon sing "'O Holy Night" and Ailee's performances and look for that ping.

Mariah's vocals deteriorated not because of her constant use of falsetto...It was because she used an airy tone production in her modal voice . Using falsetto might be unhealthy to a certain extent since it's not full cords closure, but at least it isn't as unhealthy as using a breathy tone in the modal voice. Don't countertenors use falsetto as well? They have trained themselves to produce it in a healthier way and in a fuller tone...correct me if I'm wrong.

I always try to forget about Mariah's breathy tone in her modal voice, don't like to think of Slayriah having any flaws (even if they are stylistc lmfao). I thought Countenors used a heady mixed, but then again their voice is weird, so I don't really know.

then how high or how low is she in the mediocre class?or is she smack middle or decent-mediocre?

Mediocre is just mediocre.

But isn't Eunji a better vocalist than Taeyeon and Hyorin? She pretty much never strains unlike the other two.

Nope. She's basically like Ariana Grande (except she's so much more better than her). All Eunji's got going for her are her belts, her belts are fine and resonant up to F5, but after that she goes really messy. Her lower range is practically non-existent and her falsetto is well, not that great. She's got more intonation issues than Taeyeon and Hyorin, too.

Wow.. They put SPICA's Kim Boa in the charts but not SPICA's Kim BoHyung? And what do they mean mediocre? Ailee would be definitely be in Tier 3 if we're talking about mediocre. She and more imitates Beyonce way too much. Same technique etc. She's definitely one of the best singers in Korea but mediocre. So why not put her in the Tier 3 like they did with Kim Boa?.. Why am I complaining here.. I'm wasting my time  :ahmagah:

What are you talking about? This chart is about who has the best technique not who you think is the best musically, Ailee is a very good vocalist and uses very good technique (which is the same for everyone). Therefore, she's at the top of the list. Kim BoA's technique is no where near Ailees'. Read the OP properly, please.

Seungyeon and Gyuri are bad because they have hardly any breath support, they cannot maintain a neutral larynx whilst belting and they never sing in tune. They're always nasal and have sucky control.

Taeyeon sustains three C5s in Lost in Love and in most of the performances she resonates each of them.

i agree with the nasal thingy but i dont understand the ones i bolded LOL

Straining = reaching the high note but struggling for it and causing your throat to tense up and your voice box to shoot up.

Intonation = singing out of tune, going flat or sharp.

Breath support and control = You need to support your voice properly by breathing correctly, the girls do not do so, therefore they have no control over their voice.

So I get that the lower half of the top 10(tae hyo luna eunji or dana or sunye etc) are pretty much all even, also in AKP thread and YT comments i've seen chung and the rest say this, but what about the upper half of the top 10(haeri jea etc)? are they also all pretty much even among each other or are the gaps bigger?

I'd say that the gaps between them are bigger (not enormous, but bigger).

So I'm trying to get better at hearing resonance, but it's kinda hard for me to tell.

Tiffany's G4 at 2:00, was that resonated? Lol

Tiffany has never resonated, just to let you know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUCbeMx4poE

what do you guys think about KARA's vocals here?

Bad.

Which male group is vocally better?

Super Junior K.R.Y

or 2AM?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRNMt9wzKEE

Oh and if you don't mind, can you rank each vocalist? Thanks :)

K.R.Y > 2AM

Guys I made a distinction between a vocalist and a singer.

You can have a good or bad vocalist because vocalists are solely judged on technique which is 100% objective, but you can't have a good or bad singer because singers are judged on emotions, stage presence and conveying a message which is 100% subjective. Therefore, if someone is a good vocalist they might not be a good singer. For example, Beyoncé is an amazing vocalist, but she's boring imo.

Seriously, since I lurked this thread, I never enjoy a performance the way I used to be. It used to be good or bad, pleasant or hurts, but now it's all about open throat, resonance, placement, etc. But I love that  :ahmagah:   thank you all for spreading this kind of knowledge :chu:

And maybe this is not about Kpop but , what do you guys think of this girl, Agnes Monica ?

She's the one after BoA. And the note at 1:43, is it whistle or head voice ?

And here's another performance of her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W88mqJya55g

Does she use good technique or is she another aguilera? What does she rank in Kpop? Like below or above someone?

Sorry for too many questions :._.:

btw she's Siwon's girlfriend lol jk

1st video was tensed falsetto and was pretty painful to my ears.

2nd video, mediocre performance. There were quite a bit of off moment, she went flat and sharp a lot and her falsetto is just horrible.

so it's not whistle nor head voice? Jeez my poor ear can't differentiate a thing :>_>:  But people here claim it as '6th octave head voice', so I guess they're wrong :._.:

Thanks for answering. And I am really curious at how you tell whether someone's resonating or not, I still can't get 'the ring' thing, is there any video about this?

Nope, a tensed falsetto, the girl does not possess a whistle register. Once you reach an F6 you have to switch to whistle register, but most people use a tensed falsetto.

Here's a video for head voice:

Whistle:

Resonance:

Hope these help ^^
