Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

VISION

No one have proved me wrong — that is the point. Simply saying "You're wrong and know nothing about vocals and resonating blah blah blah" does not destroy my claim. My claim is simple: Vocal technique (HOW you use your voice) is not related to talent and ability. This is a simple concept and should be easy to refute, but no one has done so. Why? Because the cannot. Partly because they don't have the material and/or agree but don't want to admit it.

Technique does not make you a good singer (in the original term, universal term, not the faux term that bad singers use to soften the blow of sucking). It simply means you know how to USE your voice in an efficient and healthy manner. A hobo on the street with gout could be able to do this; this doesn't mean he's the next Labelle.

Heck if a hobo on the street has the ability to perfect himself by using the correct vocal technique, then damn sure is he talented because he's actually physically understood the science of vocals (which is a pretty hard thing to do, because you haven't even comprehended it!).

Regina, didn't your parents teach you that discrimination is a bad thing?

yes, pretty much

Wait! You were on the akp thread?!

What is head place? i'm confused, is it mask resonance?

Nope. Mask resonance means you can feel the vibrations in your face, when you put it in head placement you feel it all over your head. An example of a vocalist who always uses head placement would be Mariah and mask would be Whitney.

So is Chen basically the changmin of dbsk?

LOL Sure, if that's the way you want to put it.

akisame, Chung. Thnx ^^

Do you think Seohyun could be an untrained lyric mezzo? Sometimes she sounds deep (like in the 1st tour) or her deepness is only a vocal failure?

Nope. If you listen to her tessitura she maintains a very girlish tone, definitely a LLS.

Well that's how it seemed to me just checking on the last couple of pages. Especially towards Regina and Kongwee. As for Sunye you/posters gave the impression that Tae hitting that note perfectly shat on everything Sunye accomplished with her voice. But that's just how I read it, I might have misinterpretated this part: "And the Taeyeon E5 just destroyed everything Sunye has done."

I checked it a couple of times but I didn't understand that much about the details, and it was a bit of a mess. IIRC I got some good explanations earlier in this thread despite making myself seem like a fool.

Still felt some did it a bit harshly. Not everyone can know everything. Remember that when people ask here it's because they don't know.

Sorry, sometimes we fight amongst ourselves too lol.

Why do you keep on using italics lol.

Too emphasise my dumbness at some things lol

@soshi.mp3 Do you just want idol groups? Or out of all male groups?

For you vocal majors/trained vocalists, do you find yourself noticing a lot more when people aren't using correct technique/can't tolerate bad singing more now?  Do you think it's "ruined" some pop/rock music for you?

I'm curious to know if it's like playing a musical instrument ---

e.g., random someone who isn't a music major/minor heard me practicing a piece that I needed to play for a juried exam --- I always got comments like "Wow, you played that perfect (i.e. hit all the correct notes is what they usually mean)" or "that sounds so amazing/difficult (even if it's just a fast piece and not particularly hard)"

versus my piano prof's constant barrage of critical "you need to work on your intonation more especially when you're playing Bach, you don't want to sound the same (as when I play the other exam piece which happened to be Brahms)", "you're too heavy-handed in this (forte) section you're not going to get enough dynamic range when you need to get louder", or even specifics of "you're using (left third finger) on that note, it's too soft change your fingering here and here", "less pedal and more finger legato!"  --- to this day I can hear her voice in my head whenever I'm learning a new piece, and people seem surprised that I'm never satisfied with any performance I do as much as they are.

No, not really. I like to think of myself as owning two sets of ears: one set is for vocals and one is just for jamming. However, my vocal ears do sometimes turn on when it's incredibly obvious that someone is just plain sucky. It has changed the way I watch talent shows though.

Hey guys i got a question. Where does SHINee stand among the male idol groups? And is Taemin on par with Jonghyun or is Jonghyun still better than him?

I'd say that they're in the top 10, they've got two decent male vocalists and a lead vocalist that is top tier mediocre. Taemin is better than Jonghyun in terms of being a vocalist, but imo he's so boring.

What are the odds that Jessica will finally resonate something this year? I am honestly eagerly awaiting it

Very low - when she starts being more consistent with removing her nasality (especially whilst belting) I'll get my hopes up.

What do you folks think of Roy Kim's vocalist skills?  I tried to do a search on the thread but his entire name's too short to allow it -_-  Sorry if this is a repeat, if it is could you please link me the post where it's discussed? Thank you.

Hehe. I'll let Zhx answer this one.

As emotions are subjective, I assume Luna's and Taemin's singing can be emotional to some, but to me both are really boring despite their technique being good.

Tbh with the level she's at rn, I don't see why it's so hard for her, if she can't simply practice proper technique 20 min a day then I don't get what she does... them idols must be real busy cuz it's all it takes, 20 min for about 2 months and at least some A4's and Bb4's should start being resonant..BUT to actually answer the question, probably none.

It's true... it's awful when you pitch instruments, voices can take it for sometime... lol but it sounds nice! Except it sounds more like a contralto to me than a real guy, so I'd prolly not stan a guy who sounds like a woman.

Oh I hear it.

Yes Luna has resonated, she can be healthy up until her higher notes too, and Amber is good for a non vocalist, but she's still weak overall

No, Ailee sounds like a Tenor.

~~~~ :3 To me it sounded like Changmin at times tho, so it wasn't exactly enjoyable.. lol So yknow like a high ass tenor.
ARE YOU INSULTING MY EDITING SKILLS?! It sounded like a man to me, you thought Toni Braxton was a contralto, so we obviously can't trust you when it comes to voice typing :hoplz:
I'm gay. I'm half a girl. hypocrite >_<
You don't have to really be classically trained to have proper technique... but yeah... I ponder because musicianship is also used to judge vocalists..]]
NIGGUH. I NEVER SAID I WAS GOOD AT THIS. LOL I said it's not what I care about anyway~~~ No i'm not insulting your skills, I'm saying it either sounds like a girly man, or a manly woman... yknow Changmin sounds girly..
I don't know what Changmin sounds like! Don't ever say you're half girl again, do you suffer what girls suffer?! NO!
Why did this thread turn into a discussion about who's the most girly and has the right to insult the other??
Where would people like Jason Mraz and Duffy (couldn't really think of any similar female singers so just picked her, sry) rank as singers? I'm not sure if they've got any vocalist skills (well Duffy has I guess) but they're mostly loved for their voices/way of singing.
Lol We actually go off-topic a lot, and then take it to PM :lol:
I don't really know about those two, but Jason Mraz has some nice musicianship.
