Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

Ok. I guess because I barely listen to her performances during her prime so she always appeared as less consistent than Mimi for me. Thank you for the video.

Regarding messa di voce, didn't Bey also do it in some performance if I recall correctly? I cannot remember which one but pretty sure she used to do it.

It's always interesting to analyze the utilization of classical techniques of non-classical singers. Pavarotti said in an interview with Sutherland and Horne that the term doesn't actually exist in Italian, that no critics would use the term, and basically it just means to put the voice in position (something along the line). Haha not sure if the man was serious or he just trolled. And then Joan and Marilyn instantly demonstrated the technique like a piece of cake, god bless them. But I digress here.

Here's also an application of messa di voce in metal music, done by the God of heavy metal, arguably the best metal vocalist ever Rob Halford (I know most of you don't like the genre, sorry for shamelessly trying to plug in my faves here :._.: ). It's done in the start, so subtle but supremely gorgeous:

Yes. Beyonce did it as well.

It is a classical technique  and the term itself is Italian as well. It's not only done by singers though. It's used for instruments as well.

That wasn't a Messa Di Voce. It was his mic messing up.

Do you remember what performance?

Well Pavarotti is Italian himself. That's why I say maybe he just messed around when he said that. :P

I think this is an example of its application in instruments I suppose?

Well fair enough. He's still the best for me.

Wow that video... Thanks for sharing. Fans of big voice divas are sure dedicated. I can never have the patience to compile a video like that.

Baritone voice will be someone who sounds like Carlos Marin of Il Divo or that country kid in American Idol (can't remember his name right now).

A bass voice is very rare and it's not someone you encounter often (LOL at the whole Kyuhyun is a bass thing again). If you wonder a singer is a bass or not, just check if their voice color and weight are similar to those of Ezio Pinza or Feodor Chaliapin.

Same here LOL I'd have no patience to actually watch so many videos to make a 15+ minutes videos xD

There's a Bass singer in country music. I can't remember his name though LOL

A lot of people seem to confuse vocal range with voice type quite a bit.  Like they assume if someone can reliably hit low notes they must be a bass or baritone.  Is it because vocal tessitura isn't well known to non-singers?

That's for sure. Kyu has one of the most developed lower extension among the male idols but he's so far way from being a baritone, let alone a bass, that I can't help laughing when many fans are still hellbent on him being a bass.

It's safe to say that all male idol singers are tenor.

Well Kyuhyun's vocal range isn't that of a Bass anyway. Has he gone to lower 2nd octave? No. Therefore he is not a Bass.

Also this confusion was created  by SME themselves. They promoted KRY as "The Bass, The Baritone and the Tenor".

Wow, I didn't know that (re: KRY), what in the world were they thinking?  I though people were insane for saying Kyuhyun was a bass (like, have they never heard a real bass singer, like Barry White?) but that explains a lot.

I think the only male idol singer who isn't a tenor is Yesung. He's probably a Baritenor, but even his voice type has tenor in its name.

Hmm I don't think so. A normal baritone tessitura is around G2-G4/Ab4 but his lower register is too airy and lacks support to be a baritone (watch his cover of That man). He's pushing a spinto tenor, at most.

But he might just be an untrained baritone. His voice is kinda darker in his middle voice, which is why I have my doubts about him being a tenor. He's not a spinto tho. His voice isn't as huge to be considered a spinto.
