Yes both Jonghyun and Taemin are better than Yunho and Changmin.

Actually, it goes like this: Kyuhyun > Ryeowook > Yesung > Jonghyun/Taemin > Onew/Changmin > Yunho

I'm not sure who's better between Onew and Changmin. It's also hard to tell where EXO vocalists should be placed in this ranking as they don't have as much material as the rest to judge their vocals them properly.

Lol Changmin is as good as Jessica loool, maybe even a little less.

It's a G#5. Sounds like it's in heady mix.

His voice was better at that time because it was in a good, healthy condition as he didn't go out of his comfort zone as much or attempt those high notes like in MAMA or Wolf. His voice was less whiny because he didn't go that high and strain his voice as much back then.

Ah, I see. I thought SM trainer did something bad to him lol . Poor baekhyun now he's dying everytime he tries to hit E5 in Wolf :(

Thanks for answering  :stare:

btw, do you know right away what notes someone sings after hearing it?? ah I forgot the term for this  :._.:

Park Hyo Shin too, right? I wonder why. I thought your voice gets deeper with age.

well, Park Hyo Shin's voice has changed quite a bit since his debut (in 2000, lol), so I wouldn't attribute it only to age. Like his voice on his debut album is similar to his voice now, but less powerful, and then around 2004/2005 his voice got really deep and husky in the higher notes, and 2009/2010 ish his voice became brighter but really constricted sounding. Then sometime during his military service it got brighter. So it doesn't really seem like it was necessarily age that had such an effect on his voice.

Josias said when I asked that his mixed voice got more balanced and his projecting got better. (he also said it wasn't a drastic change, but I feel like he didn't talk about his really deep voice from 2005, which I think is pretty drastic)

Lemme rephrase: Some pitch problems are related to improper support. Improper support means no resonance. Pitch problems means no resonance. Ofc I know, it also has to do with bad hearing and muscle memories. But in Kpop especially, pitch problems are mainly due to support problems and bad hearing, therefore they are not gonna resonate. Whitney was a brilliant vocalist, using her as an example is kinda moot to the point here. I'd like to hear someone from IS2 resonating while going offkey. Srsly we are talking about IS2 and Kpop here. Not world class vocalists. Anyway I do agree with Josias as well, but about IS2 idols... I do not agree, idols cannot resonate and be flat/sharp, they do not have it in them.

Yeah it is. Because some of them still have intonation issues.

Does bad hearing really relate to resonance?

Raina>Jessica>Gain. Anyway Bom, Gyuri and Taeyang should be in the last places. And Luna>Hyorin>Taeyeon. Sunye is more or less on Eunji's level or below.

Oh, is Raina actually that high?  I heard her do an IS2 perf where she covered Juarim and it was pretty impressive from a performance standpoint, but that's rock or something, after all... I haven't heard her do many other covers, though.  And everyone says Jungah has better technique than her.

Many resonant notes. C5s from Lost in Love especially are her best belted notes.

Tiffany. Taeyeon is miles ahead of Sica.

zhx's commentary re: Tiffany XD;;;

It's more HyoNa...they are like the same.

I guess it's barely worth debating which one is better, but I thought ppl here moved Yoona up incrementally due to The Boys?  (... isn't there anything in Japanese to judge them on, though?)

Is Huh Gak good? I'm not sure if he's an idol though.

I listened to one of his performances and his breathing reminded me of Seohyun's- there was a sharp breath before each line.  But that was only one performance (Dream Concert) so I don't know him well.

In military, you are force to speak loudly and sing loudly. It will affect his voice.

Guys, how good is Annie Lennox? And do you know Bono Vox (U2)? I'm extremely biased with U2, I can't judge him e.e

Annie Lennox is great. A true Coloratura Contralto. A very rare voice.

No. A bad hearing doesn't mean no resonance. Demi has bad sense of key, yet is resonant many times.

Maybe after drugs, but Whitney Houston's technique is probably the most desirable technique there is among Mainstream vocalist. Whitney Houston was extremely skilled, she could bring her Mask up to G#5 majority of people start using Head Placement after Eb5, so her being able to bring her Mask up to G#5 just proves how skilled she was. She has also done Mesa Di Voce which only vocalist with amazing Dynamics can do/achieve, not even Mariah Carey has done that. She also has a completely developed and connected Head Voice, and fully supported Lower Range, so I don't know how her technique is less than desirable..

I think you need to watch this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg2eRHdPJM0

Mariah Carey may be the Imperial Songbird, but Whitney Houston is The Voice.

Ok. I guess because I barely listen to her performances during her prime so she always appeared as less consistent than Mimi for me. Thank you for the video.

Regarding messa di voce, didn't Bey also do it in some performance if I recall correctly? I cannot remember which one but pretty sure she used to do it.

It's always interesting to analyze the utilization of classical techniques of non-classical singers. Pavarotti said in an interview with Sutherland and Horne that the term doesn't actually exist in Italian, that no critics would use the term, and basically it just means to put the voice in position (something along the line). Haha not sure if the man was serious or he just trolled. And then Joan and Marilyn instantly demonstrated the technique like a piece of cake, god bless them. But I digress here.

Here's also an application of messa di voce in metal music, done by the God of heavy metal, arguably the best metal vocalist ever Rob Halford (I know most of you don't like the genre, sorry for shamelessly trying to plug in my faves here :._.: ). It's done in the start, so subtle but supremely gorgeous:

Tarja is awesome. Never heard a better symphonic metal sound than nightwish.

Yes she is!!!! Bitch doesn't even belt once in her life but proves that a fully developed head voice is enough to rock one of the heaviest genres in music. Too bad she's gone and Nightwish will never be the same. :horror:
