Yeah, not even Sohyang does..what is why her supported range is G3/G#3-C6/C#6-F6/F#6....and she has been extremely consistent with her C6/C#6 belting...sooo...

lol my point is, to have a certain note, i think we expect singers to be consistent, not perfect

my suggestion might have been too premature, but lets see how taeyeon does in the live performances for this promotion cycle.

im confident that she'll be consistent with her D5s more often than not and has a good chance to push her supported range up to just D5 :o but we'll see xD

https://kpopalypse.com/2017/03/01/kpopalypse-presents-the-v-files-1-resonance/#more-7453

I'd really love to hear your opinions on this article. Thanks in advance!

This person is a joke. He/she even had the nerve to bring in physics equations rolleyes.gif

clearly, the term "resonance" in vocal technique refers to something entirely different from the term "resonance" used elsewhere in physics...

this person also probably doesn't even sing... i mean i've applied what i've learned about vocal technique from this thread and from the blog to my own singing throughout the years and there's a clear difference in improvement, not only when i hear myself back but i can actually feel it in my voice and in my body when i sing.

i just skimmed through it but the general vibe i got is that this is some kind of high schooler who's learning the sound and waves unit in physics for the first time, and is using that as an excuse to bash vocal technique because his or her faves are too far down the ladder. oops!

He's actually older than any of us.

"I started playing piano at a very young age and switched to guitar in my teens. I first performed onstage at 14 and by the time I left school I had my own band and was playing venues. At 19 years of age I started my own record label, recorded and released music by myself and others. I’ve been on several tours mainly with punk groups and have also been a radio DJ since 1997. Later on after doing music for a few years I decided to get some qualifications so I went to University and passed a Bachelor of Music (honours), and also completed a separate audio engineering degree. These days I make most of my music industry income from music teaching.

I’m not. However, I do think that caring overly about vocal technique in a genre of music where the benchmarks for success are Madonna, Elvis and The Spice Girls and everyone either uses generous helpings of electronic pitch-correction or sings to doubled backing tracks is a little ridiculous. K-pop is not opera. I understand that some people do like to hear good vocals and that’s fine (I can even relate, as I like to hear good guitar playing), but where I have an issue is when those people start to infiltrate popular taste and try to make everyone else hear music the way that they hear it and judge everyone on those terms. I come from a punk background where the drive to get up and give music a go and the strength of your idea is more important than the technicality of the end result. Technique should never be a barrier to performance or opportunity. I would never impose my technical guitar-playing knowledge on the general population’s taste as rule of law by saying “Kurt Cobain shouldn’t be successful because he can’t play guitar as well as Yngwie Malmsteen†because I think there’s a place for poor players with great ideas and/or a unique approach. Likewise I don’t want to hear anyone telling me that I shouldn’t listen to Bom just because there is also Ailee."

He's just someone who's not vocally trained, doesn't bother to understand what we do but does have a strong opinion that differs from ours. Without understanding vocal technique or our blog'a intentions, he disses it disrespectfully. He's entitled to his opinion, but maybe he could do it a more respectful way after doing some more research on vocal technique. Comparing vocal technique to opera clearly shows his ignorance.

I agree.

Like I said, I only skimmed through it because it was extremely condescending, ignorant, disrespectful, and tasteless, so I couldn't be bothered. But for someone so old and so "professional", the fact that I thought he was a high schooler speaks volumes to his character and his maturity level.

Nobody is stopping him from liking the singers that he does... if he likes to listen to Bom over Ailee, that's fine. I know a lot of people in this thread (such as yourself) that actually respect and like Bom. On the same token, there are also many people here (such as myself) that don't like Ailee's singing. Just because we find vocal technique important doesn't mean we don't appreciate other aspects of singing, such as tone, style, musicality, musicianship, and individual approach to music. These things are not mutually exclusive. In the same fashion that this person values other aspects of vocals, the blog is simply dedicated to technique. There's nothing wrong with that.

Opinions aside, his post was presumptuous, bigoted, and absolutely immature and nobody here should take him seriously. He may have experience of his own but one's qualifications only make you an expert in what you have studied, not in everyone else's field of work. He's criticizing what you do without even realizing that vocal pedagogy exists. So Matty and everyone else, just ignore him and keep the blog the wonderful place of learning and discussion that it is.

I haven't read the post but I can imagine what it's like since I know what he's written on the topic and similar topics before (and I've read the posts about it on this thread). His 'thing' is ranting and being obscene so whatever he writes shouldn't be taken at face value. Apart from that I think he has good points (the people here mostly agree with them anyway...), and is a bit misguided with his crusade.

It was an extremely lengthy post and unnecessarily disrespectful. After he called you guys faggots I was done. But of course this is just one example, there were many other insults made, explicit and implicit.

ANYWAYS

an extremely rare audio recording of whitney in japan 1997 singing i will always love you in ORIGINAL key, and sounding like her prime (i.e. late 80s early 90s) despite it being 1997. a must listen of the queen of resonance

Analysis on this please?

I think this is the very first time Rosé does a performance that showcase her vocals, i'm curious about technique now that we got to hear her singing more seriously without sticking to her usual style.

her A4s sound ok to me :o

I love still the one and in this moment but I don't know if she's a mezzo

but her voice seems to have the weight of a mezzo so i was just wondering xD

Oh no dear, honestly when I first started learning to sing I didn't even know we sang notes! A friend played a note on the piano and told me to sing it, and I stared at her like what do you mean? lol So you're fine! Try this test!

http://jakemandell.com/adaptivepitch/

lol im average, i got 59th percentile (1.8Hz discrimination)

also i dont want to keep spamming this thread bc im sure most of u dont really care but this is something i recorded a while back that u might like ^^

over time i realized that less is more so im trying to keep editing to a minimum xD before i used to try to use effects to hide flaws in my technique but i think it really takes away from my tone and id rather my vocal colour come through despite problems i might have

Long time no postt but just wanted to drop by and post that Lina was on King of Masked Singer!

I didn't see anyone else post about it

It's only a 2 minute performance, but it's nice to see her belting in the 5th octave again even though they don't sound as good as they used to

I actually missed this because I've been super busy in the last couple of months and Lina is the last person I'd expect to have gone on the show. But wow she blew me away. Through all these years, even at 33 years old, her voice is almost exactly the same, and she can STILL resonate powerfully and consistently up to Eb5 just like we last saw her (which is not to say that she regressed on her E5s; she just didn't have any in the performances she did, but based on how her Eb5s sound, I have confidence that she can still resonate E5s like she used to). I wouldn't say that she doesn't sound as good as she used to, I hear resonance on all her belted 5th octave notes. Some of the notes are a little chesty or pushed, but it's still resonance. But I think most of the notes are still relaxed and resonant :o

That being said, YAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS UGH I SPAZZED SO HARD TT____TT I LOVE HER SO MUCH UGH.

Now that Ock Joohyun is reclassified as proficient to good, I can safely say that Lina is the best female vocalist to ever come out of the Big 3 (SM, JYP, YG).

and isnt her company just affiliated with YG? i dont think she was ever trained by YG or signed under YG :oooo

I found it interesting that the vocal teacher of SM managed to classify Somi vocal type, only by its timbre when speaking. (And he also said that she was forcing herself to sing like contralto when she obviously can not lol)

couldnt it also be a mistranslation?

i didnt think it was possible, but willemijn is improving on her F5s

performance from last week:

@1:08 i think a supported F5 (but it could be slightly throaty or pushed)

@1:25 her huge Eb5s and C#5s as always

(keep in mind that she's a mezzo soprano).

she has really, really healthy technique. she started her musical career when she was 19, and she's now 41.

she's maintained healthy technique for over 20 years... and not only that, but in total, she's apparently performed the role of elphaba in over 2000 shows to date.

and she resonates each and every single time... live.....

disney mulan's reflection with a live orchestra. (even if you're annoyed with me talking about willemijn, it's a really beautiful listen).

@2:16 to 2:29.... a 13 second long phrase sung in one breath, supported all throughout. she's really perfected her breath control

I mean, if they were all trained like they did on ep 2 of P101S2 then I'd understand. The trainers just go 'why can't you sing high? you can't sing' but they don't actually teach them anything.

A bass probably wouldn't be able to sing in standard kpop range, but a baritone should be able to with a good teacher. The tutor I have right now has been able to train some crazy notes out of people you'd think wouldn't be able to go that high (or low for that matter). In contemporary you can train yourself to have a much wider 'comfortable' range than with classical. If everyone who sang was trained like that, it'd probably almost be better to be a baritone or a mezzo, because training yourself to sing lower is damn near impossible once you hit a certain note, but reinforcing your head voice and eventually making into a mix extends your voice pretty damn near as high as a soprano or tenor could sing.

^ i need a vocal coach that can help me do this LOL

This annoyed me so much. Like the song is already unreasonably high for a bunch of boys who probably aren't training to be main vocals anyways, and you're just going to tell them "sing higher, do better". I understand they need a celebrity vocal coach for ratings who probably can't teach anyways but hire an actual coach on the side of that. The only other coach they brought was Twice and BTS's vocal coach and if those are her credentials then................

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcLdIUu_FqY

Like Ren literally just screamed and he said not not bad at 4:55.

same. it's so annoying how they rate the vocals on that show :x sometimes they're like "great job!" but the guy that's singing is 100% in his throat

ive been following produce101 closely and i think even i sing better than most of the guys on that show :x and i have no professional training :x
