Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

I'm not one of the vocal experts, just a lurker.

So I couldn't give you an accurate anything about them.

It was more of a general question though I don't disagree that Luther is a god. I've listened to him since I was 13 or 14. I remember hearing he had died. :(

Oh I just didn't want to give you anything and it be false. I only know Phil Collins for his work on Tarzan, and the occasional song he has done that I recognize. I am not a fan nor do I listen to his work regularly, so I can't speak for him. Same for Elton, however someone asked about him, and it was said that Elton was more of a songwriter that sings as he doesn't really do much.

*Kanye shrug*

Never hurts to try

It sounds like Sam Cooke was at least decent. His lower register sounded nice, especially B2 and up (but at least his G2-A2 were audible and did not sound like they were struggling or pulling down). There is this scratchy quality to his belts...it wasn't annoying and wasn't always evident...I don't know. I kind of want to say he was throaty in that video, some of the belts just didn't feel as completely open as they could have been (comparing to other male vocalist who have more open moments)...but that's just me. But I think it is like Hyorin now, where it isn't a sign of bad technique (at least I don't think it is..could very well be wrong), but more so bad habits that affected the quality of the voice overall.

He has that husky/scratchy sound, not sure if it's a matter of certain registers or just his voice generally. Take this for instance:

How do you tell if a vibrato is healthy and why do some people have it and others don't? Especially in the case of belting.

Is it due to pitch?(Is that the official name for it, shaky music theory knowledge) I find Opera singers frequently have it in comparison to pop singers.

I expected slayage...

God damn it Naul is killing me right now. Like this boy needs to stop it. He really shouldn't be slaying me after three (or is it four) years but damn it, he does. He strained in Wind Memory live though but my goodness, that boy.

Nonetheless, came to ask about this boy cause no one ever answers.

Edit: Okay, that did not sound as good as when I first heard it.

Someone needs to vocally analyze Nina. At times she's nasally but I'm noticing she's much better than I thought she was. Heard she has the lowest note. Found this online. Whitney is so low on this!

We've seen that before, and some of the ranges are even wrong.

But I don't even know who she is.

*You don't know goddess Nina?!*

How do you not know the "high priestess of soul* SMH.

She popularized feeling good.

It's right to say that Seohyun went back to how she used to sing before lol Idk...

She does... it's just she's the closest one and Idk who else could replace her vocally.... Someone who has few lines? But those can't sing as well as her.. we're just gonna have to wait

Friendly reminder of what Tiffany singing Jessica's part sounds like in The Boys

Tiffany:

Nina Simone? she hits E2 where.

I still struggle to understand why he's there too

3:56 that was just really not nice. 3:26 was also pretty much not nice. I don't personally think Leo is competent myself but only cuz Idk him so I cant say for sure... C#5 and so on, those notes are too high to attempt, Changmin strains them but he uses more head in his mix so it doesn't sound like he's dying... C#5's for both Eunkwang and Leo were just really not good

Okay so you found in the search that Daehyun is average and Leo decent? Not from me, but from the people who said that, as far as I'm aware, both were considered "decent". Now in my own terms... Daehyun was the only one with good placement in this performance, the only who had resonance, Leo has a very light bright voice, but his G#4's barely even sounded supported and anything above was very strained, Eunkwang also was just straining and wasn't supporting well, Youngjae's support was okay and Daehyun had resonance on F#4's and G#4's, which is as high as he sang... the sustained F#4 slide to G#4, the G#4 was supported and the F#4 resonant.. if anything Daehyun is an above average vocalist at least and the rest to me, from this performance, sound like average vocalists. This whole "Leo has a resonant C5 in studio" might be just as reliable as the whole "Tiffany's D5 in Mr Mr studio version is resonant" because reverb and effects in studio can be used to fool the ear.. now Idk what C5 Leo has that's resonant, but I'd be very surprised if he could have anything resonant even below C5 based on this performance alone. Could be a bad day, could not.

I went to check the C5 Leo his in studio, it sounds like there are vocal effects, it's in the background with reverb and whatnot, it's the same with Tiffany's 2 "resonant" D5's from Only U and Mr. Mr. It still sounds like Tiffany is using her throat and yelling to me, but it was reverbed and it had a nice non-nasality forward projection that may fool the ear into thinking it's good but to me it still didn't sound nice. If they could get it right in studio, they should be able to at least get it right once live, yknow?

didn't support nor project the low notes very well, just B3's I believe, her C#5's were kinda closed and the E5's also...but she's not nasal so that's a good thing, she just sounded unstable with her breathing and in the beginning she sounded flat....maybe the performance aspect was a bit much for her, but she doesn't sound bad, she can mix well and has a nice tone but her approach vocally is very throaty, even though she can mix high, she uses her throat to push the notes out a bit too much imo..

Ne Me quitte pas. (According to folks)

She's a contralto, so quite possible.

My goodness I have never really cared for Sohyang since all I ever see her do is some classical stuff but today I listened to her properly and well. *bows down in apology*

Men, she is hiding a big black woman inside of her (Yes, a stereotype but let it go). Damn, it was a little over the top but lawd, I mean lawd, *fans herself in praises*

If I were to only play 1 song at my deathbed, it would be a song that is over the top

She's one of the leaders of Korean Gospel lol. She knows her stuff, and it doesn't sound like a poor copy of something else.

And 0.o she has the same back-up singer (the male one) as Park Hyo Shin.

Not a fan of over the top at times. It has its time and place though which lead me to a mini Ailee rant.

She covered Georgia on my mind and I disliked it. This is why there's a time and place for killing it. It was vocally what you expect from all her covers. There will be drama and the whole nonsense. A three course meal of runs, a growl and a belted high note. I'm calling it the Ailee set (And the Hyorin set). I think it started great but kind of forgot what the song was about half way. I was just like what exactly is she doing? A lot of sass but it made me wonder whatever happened to just relaying a message in a song? She made me feel like she wanted to snatch Georgia's weave. It's like girl, you are singing about a state...

To be fair, I went in with some bias. I really like the Ray Charles version. It has that homesickness and that relaxed feel of just thinking about home. I sometimes just really dislike when people cover old school songs that I like.

PPS. On a funny note, some of these songs aren't Bolton's. Like half of them...

I've determined, I'm really as in REALLY, not a Sohyang fan. I'm just going to steal a comment I wrote on one of her songs.

It feels like a pointless exhibition where I'm meant to robotically clap at a fascinating display of vocal ability verses really feel anything.

She's got the talent alright but her vocals could not move me if they manifested into a 30 foot crane. There's just something emotionally lacking. She really though did slay Lean on Me.

PS. Unfortunately, once you habituate, she becomes very grating. Like Ailee. I have to take a break from the vocal show. Though Ailee for me is more balanced in that regard. She kind of knows when to go off.

We don't really talk about emotions as much as we do actual technique in this thread, emotions are pretty much a subjective matter with not true 'right' or 'wrong' because it is based on your own perception. It's pretty much just an opinion.

So true, but I really think you can utilize different parts of a song to evoke emotion. It will still be subjective but there's a reason ballads tend to move people more than electro dance music. There's just no way to feel emotional about a persistent barrage of belts which is why Sohyang's best parts for me are the initial stages of a song.
