Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

I didn't say open throated, I said relaxed sound. The average person singing in their comfortable speaking range won't strain in that range, hence they're singing in a relaxed comfortable range but still the time production is shallow due to weak support. Don't misunderstand please.

WHAT? I didn't misunderstand anything.

d like to add one thing to your previous question, you said what's the name of an open throated non supported sound. There's no name for that but that's how most ppl sing essentially in their comfortable range. Someone who doesn't know how to sing well will most likely have a relaxed opened sound in their comfortable speaking range but the sound will still come out shallow and flat in tone,

Oops.

Ahmin, is it true that Jessica does better than Taeyeon in D5s or has more free D5s?

I asked layla on ask.fm but im just gonna ask here since you're the least biased. Aly isnt sure, I kinda agree.

As such is it a skill to maintain some tonality outside their supported range?

Eg who is better

A male vocalist is consistently resonant up to A4 but basically strains everything above

Or

A male vocalist who has decent tonality up to F#4/G4 but doesnt strain/maintains mediocre tonality up to Say C5/C#5?

WHEN DID I EVER SAY THAT?

Has he ever done it live?

I really don't know who to trust anymore. You even confirmed it on ask.fm

I said she has a handful of open/decent D5s (NOT resonant) and one resonant Bb4 - and confirmed that? But I never said her D5s were better than Taeyeon's, I said she has shown potential (which I don't believe any more). You need to read things properly and not blame it on "trust".

Did u read my posts and your post.

I was referring to more free D5s when i was talking about asking you.

And you did say she has more free D5s. I never asked you if she had better control, i didnt accused you of saying she did either.

I never said you agreed. I never said you answered, even if you did.

Also Im sorry for the typo. As i said when i said "i asked layla" i was referring to "if more free D5s".

I was saying "i dont know who to trust" because some people here have different opinions and your tone seemed like you denied your statement. Although It was just a miscommunication.

But yeah i shouldnt have said anything about trust since it had nothing to do with it

Wth no I did not! I said she has more ease because her voice is naturally lighter. omfg

Whoops not "more control", i meant "better"

read

I even asked you on ask.fm recently and specifically about that last sentence

Tbh when I read your ask.fm question, I only read the first line of my paragraph. (and no you did not ask me specifically about the last sentence you just said "Girl, is this true?")

Well, that was my bad, but it isn't what I meant. Let me go and rectify that.

But why are you bringing up something from January when you know that in just a few months someone can show regression rather than improvement?

americans

Does anyone here know any good/great mainstream (american) male vocalists especially baritone who often achieves resonance?

I'm training my ears to differentiate good notes, but it is somewhat always easier for to differentiate great female vocalists with the bad one and somehow finding a great female vocalist is also easier to manage than male. Like I only know Naul which can be taken as example for a great male vocalist (tenor), while on the other hand there are mariah, whitney, aretha, babs, sohyang and even mezzo like beyonce who are considered great female vocalists.

Thanks in advance.

At 43 years old Queen Lea Salonga is still slaying the masses with her powerful resonance, perfect articulation and phenomenal vibrato that continues to amplify her voice. Her use of dynamics, in this performance, is astounding and so is her uses of the many types of different resonances (which I cannot be bothered to name because they're Italian, and I don't speak Italian, which means I have forgotten what they are called).

I would like to see that nasal witch, Idina Menzel, even attempt to sing at half of Lea's level instead of doing her usual nails-on-a-chalkboard screeching.

Solji (the second person singing) from EXID impressed me, how do you find her? And what are her high notes? Thanks  :chu:

1st girl went flat lmao.

Solji went tense at 0:13; C5s were generally OK. Needs to improve her placement - she's less nasal than most, but does still place her voice in her nose leading to a restriction in her vocal cords that can be heard in the sort of "whispery" sound in her voice.

I always think that her falsettos are sad... how's it?

listening to this I just realized that Hyerin is very nasal  :._.:

The quality of the video, in itself, is very poor therefore I cannot provide a proper analysis on her performance. However, her falsetto is incredibly weak and the sound literally comes out of her nostrils. She should avoid singing in falsetto and she sounds voiceless.

How was their performance (no G5, right?) Thanks~

http://youtu.be/ZPzu_KjKLY0

IT WAS AMAZING.

Hyorin was resonant from the minute she opened her mouth - she is now both resonant on phrases and belts. I think the high note at the end was an F5, but I've never been good at telling notes so you'll have to wait for someone else to answer that question, but whatever it was it was sure as hell optimally resonant and PERFECT. Ugh, she was fantastic throughout.

Ailee also did well, she's improved since her latest comeback; however, the way she manipulates her vocal tract causes tension in her resonance leading it to be drowned out by Hyorin's. Furthermore, I think her drastic weight loss also affected her breath capacity (but that's something she has noticed herself).

HOW THE HELL AM I BEING A "WHINY LITTLE BITCH" AND PASSING BACKHANDED COMPLIMENTS?

IT WAS AMAZING.

Furthermore, I think her drastic weight loss also affected her breath capacity (but that's something she has noticed herself).

Do you struggle with reading? I said "Ailee also did well, she's improve since her latest comeback" which equates to: Ailee and Hyorin performed equally well! Since when did that mean anything other than what I am saying? I agree, I should have talked about how Hyorin messed up those runs because they really weren't hot, but I was just so caught up in the moment because the moment she opened her mouth she was so freely resonant (read: emphasis on the FREELY).

Let me add my two cents on this whole Hyorin VS Ailee debacle:

1. I am neither part, nor ever will be a part, of the "Hyorin fan club." I couldn't get two fucks about SISTAR, and I am not a fan of Hyorin's voice.

2. I did once dislike Ailee, but I got over that about 6 months ago, so keep up with the times sweetie.

3. Hyorin's strengths: free resonance - unlike Ailee, she manipulates her vocal tract correctly and sings with a balanced mix, meaning that there's no tension in her resonance (I am referring to upper belts only because they're pretty much equal in their middle voices). She uses her lower register correctly; can use her vibrato to amplify her resonance.

Hyorin's weaknesses: Can get throaty in upper belts; head voice is weak; runs are not always pitch accurate and clean.

4. Ailee's strengths: practically flawless in her middle voice; great pitch accuracy and agility (for a kpop person) on runs; beautiful head voice that resonates clearly.

Ailee's weaknesses: odd shapening of the vocal tract that causes to much air to be pushed in - most notable on upper belts; too much chest in her mix (which can actually be fatal); pushes larynx down on lower notes.

And this really hasn't got much to do with Ailee's technical weaknesses, but ever since her stupid fucking agency forced her to lose weight, she lost part of her lung power. Now this isn't me being shady, because it's something AILEE HERSELF HAS EVEN NOTICED AND EXPRESSED WORRY ABOUT. However, Ailee has improved a lot since her latest comeback, but her voice doesn't shine as much as it used to in the upper register. And I am praying to God, her company will leave her be because I actually don't wish vocal deterioration on anyone (and I want Hyorin and her to have a collab album with ultimate vocal slayage).

Now, onto the F#5's - all the F#5's you posted were resonant, I don't know what you're talking about when you say that Hyorin's F#5 in Bang, Bang was throaty. It was clearly resonant, with a stable vibrato and a clear ping that rang like a bell. I don't see why you compared their F#5s to Mariah's, because Ailee and Hyorin are not even close to being on Mariah's GOD level. Mariah would silence them both with her sublime resonance (from the 90s).

I don't know what your problem is with me, but you were incredibly rude about me for no reason whatsoever. I thought we were friends now, but we obviously are not. You keep living in the past, and failing to move on with your life. I really did not want to enter the new year with someone accusing me of being a bitch, but if that's how it is going to be, well, then Happy New Year to you too.

YAAASSS bitch fight. I WANNA SEE TEA PILLED, SCALPS EXPOSED, WIGS AND WEAVES DRAGGED, READING TO FILTH

Lol jk of course not. it's ratchet hour for me

Why not move hyorin to great-good too?

I don't think either of them are great-good, but both are good.

Actually the term whiny little ass bitch wasn't for you, 1 and 2. It wasn't as much backhanded compliment, on your side, as it was a clear difference of how you talked about Hyorin over how you talked about Ailee. I actually really appreciate your post and I'm really happy to read the things you're saying and I apologize for thinking you still were acting the same way as you did before, because this shows a much clearer and different side than what I had expected. This was all of a big grudge that I held in for a long time and it burst all at once, I was really rude and I'm aware and all I can say is, it was too much considering you're not the same at all. I am truly sorry for the rudeness, but I still am glad that I raised the points I raised and that we did get a discussion out of this. I agree about Ailee's weight loss and tbqh, considering you guys seemed to always call her fat, I'm surprised you think her agency telling her to lose weight was a bad thing.. I also think it's unfortunate too..

But the F#5 couldn't have vibrato because she didn't sustain the F#5, Hyorin I mean, it was BAD girl to blow YOUR mind. She didn't sustain them but I mean, I honestly thought they sounded kinda throaty + growling to get there. I only compared them to Mariah because that's what clear resonance was to me. I still don't think any of those F#5's are resonant, but that's just me and okay. Also, again, yes I was really rude... and you're right, but trust me, a good amount of what I said was not directed at you either, it came about when someone was being actually shady and I saw the difference in how you complimented one vocalist and kind of lost that niceness about the complimenting when it came to Ailee, it frustrated me because that always had but I couldn't say anything. I'm sorry but Happy New Year to you too. It was all built in overtime and it all burst out at once honestly and to you, I didn't mean to be this rude. Actually a good amount of my post was directed at someone who wasn't even in the argument but caused a lot of resentment in me and someone who was.

Because she ain't, at least not yet.

I accept your apology.

Vibrato can also be present on non-sustained notes, too. It's dependent on the quality of one's breath support, and can occur during transitions between notes. I think that you might be confusing her vibrato for tension? Idk, but the attack was sharp to sound sexier.

I feel guilty about Ailee's weightloss tbh.

Lol you ninja'd me I shouldn't answer the question at all. Oh yes, could you please tell me when someone sounds whiny, what really happens in his/her vocal tract? And what's the difference basically between tense, tight, strained and whiny?

Whininess is basically tension with nasality as well, the sound just comes out really squeakily.

Happy New Year everyone!

And...

I'm sorry for being really late with all these questions.

Would you consider Lea Salonga to be the most technically skilled Disney Princess? I remember it being said that Onika Noni Rose was pretty good, but how does she fare against Lea?

Onika is Tiana, right? Yes, she is actually great. Lovely vibrato and resonance, but Lea is better.

Despite having a relatively small range, Lea achieves resonance throughout all of it: from low to high, from mixed to head. Her diction is sublime and her phenomenal vibrato further accentuates her ridiculously overwhelming resonance. She's just brilliant. I was lucky enough to see her live, once, and she just blew me away.

So, people think Solji of EXID thinks she is at Hyorin/Ailee lvl, are they right?

lmao what a joke, she doesn't even come close.

in other news..... idina menzel fails to even strain out her Eb5 in let it go and instead YELLS a FLAT note with her poor larynx forced to do acrobatics in her throat....

@ 3:28

this cements the fact that she is no longer great or even good... they should have invited willemijn to sing this instead lol

The only reason why this abysmal "vocalist" still has a career in Broadway is because she sold her soul to the Devil when she joined the cast of "Glee", in hopes that people would finally attend her shows after years of screaming her head off to be heard over Kristine Chenoweth's operatic resonance in "Wicked".

This shouldn't bother me as much as it does, but.. it's Anika* Noni Rose. lol How would you say Lea is better than Anika? Musical theatre wise Lea is quite the skilled vocalist, but I mean... range wise at least, she's not got that wide of a supported upper range. Not from what I've heard at least with Let It Go and Defying Gravity.. Like her F5's start sounding a bit too heady and all.. and oh my, you've seen her live?! I'm so jealous, I'd love to watch her live.

In general, her range is small. Her F5s in 'Let It Go' and 'Defying Gravity' were still resonant, albeit in the head-centered resonance side (there is an Italian word for it, Andrew will now what it is called piano something idk), but at least she wasn't pulling up too much chest. She still buries Idina Menzel,

It could just be the sound of her voice confusing me, but I am pretty sure that Anika gets more chesty in her upper belts. The resonance is amazing, but there's this unnaturally heavy quality about her upper belts that makes me feel as if she's just putting too much chest in them. Its nothing like Idina's chestiness, of course, but I still feel it. Her head voice needs work too, its connected, but could use more developing.

Lea and Anika are not miles away from each other, I guess I was exaggerating (just refreshed my memory of Anika), but I do believe that Lea just has the edge over her. Either way, both absolutely destroy and bury Idina.

Her range is really small, I don't even really know what Lea's head voice sounds like tbqh. I feel like since her mixing as she ascends is so heady, it loses a bit of the balance and hence her range becomes limited, which in my own eyes, could be seen as a technical flaw since it limits the extent to how developed her voice is. Anika is quite good yeah, too bad she wasn't highlighted as much in Dreamgirls..Btw love your new picture <3 Is it Audrey? I'm not sure

Lea's mixing is actually quite balanced when she ascends, but she often changes up the type of resonance like fortissimo, piano forte, mezzo piano. Listen to her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream", her favourite thing is to play with dynamics. Also, listen to her Disney Medley, so many different dynamics, and she uses the full extent of her range (sans head voice). When I saw her live, I heard her head voice for the first time and it was really rich and crystal clear. Lea mainly uses her head voice in her actual performances on Broadway and the West End; however, they videos of them are so poor you can barely make out her outline, let alone heard what she's singing because of the ridiculous feedback.

Anika is the most underrated Disney vocalist, in my eyes. 'The Princess and the Frog' is barely talked about and she's been greatly overshadowed by the likes of Mandy Moore and Idina Menzel. I hope Disney gives her another chance, she deserves it. Her voice is so warm.

It's Natalie Wood that you see in my DP.

Oh no she's full of dynamics and as such, it gives her all the musicality points, it's because she's a very skilled musical theatre singer and hence, regardless of her narrow range and therefore supported range, she still gets all the points for singing really well within her own genre. I hate it how Princess and The Frog is not only underrated, it was the last real animation. I'm cool with the whole computer stuff and all but I really would like some balance with more disney movies that are actually drawn..yknow... I really like the whole cartoon thing...

Gorgeous woman u got there~

Haha ain't we all petty. LOl jk but havent u seen the discussion bout this already? ._. lol

She pretty much supports her whole range, she's like Judy Garland (who had a much smaller range).

Exactly, 'Tangled' and 'Frozen' are just so ugly. There are no emotions in the landscapes, despite being 3D, they come cross as abnormally flat...It saddens me.

RIP to Natalie Wood <3 she was so beautiful and an amazing actress.

To the rest of the users in the thread, I'd just like to point out that I was not biased when I said Ailee could support her lower notes now and has actually improved that part of her range

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz3-bPUYD2k

0:20 0:29 0:34 1:21 1:26 Now listen too all of those G3's and F#3's, all of them throughout the whole performance, consistently supported, projected, with full tone and clarity... I was actually impressed cuz I wasn't expecting those low notes to be that clear when it comes to Ailee, neutral larynx as well. I can't believe she actually fixed her lower range ㅠㅜ

I really do like Tangled and Frozen and I don't mind it as much but I just miss good old animation... Oh gee RIP indeed ㅠㅜ

The low not ate 1:26 loses tonality near the end, otherwise they were all pretty good and the performance was good, overall. Its good to see improvement.

Have you seen West Side Story? Natalie Wood is Maria.

I am more biased towards Ailee than towards Hyorin so that's where the pettiness comes into it lol (I love them both though I really do) and I am fine with Ailee being better, but again if they were both at the same level of skill I feel like it would calm down both of the fandoms and people would stop holding their breath waiting for one to make a vocal development lol.

I hope Ailee sees a good vocal coach TBH I want her to rise up through the clouds and join Sohyang in vocal heaven.

Also how does Ailee's lower range compare to Hyorin's now? I'm guessing Hyorin's is still better... What about Yeeun's?

I would probably put them on the same level, I feel that their flaws cancel each other out: Ailee's flaws are mainly the chestiness and vocal tract shaping, whilst Hyorin has the tendency to go throaty and mess up runs.

I have not~ I should though, right?

I haven't seen it either lol, but that's her most popular film. Watch 'Gypsy' its my favourite.
