ANNOUNCEMENT. Sorta. So Minzy's range isn't F3 ~ E5, it's F3 ~ F5, she hit F5 in halo. just yeah. LOL

Idk I cant tell the audio is bad

oh my what a sexy song. U have no idea how fun it is to sing these kinda crescendo notes~ But yeah IU going up on that scale~

IU is steady at improving when it comes to vocals, and I genuinely believe she actually knows what she's doing from some of the things she has said about singing.

I thank you,.. not

thanks to you i'm addictedish to that song,.. for today

with best C5 you've ever heard, you mean best from her of best in general?

In general.

Yeah she said Hyorin, Taeyeon, Ailee and Younha were the best idol vocalists before right? And she said she listened to herself from back in the day and she said "I wasn't that bad!" Oh btw Idk why you called that a C5, but that's A4. Resonant A4 with crescendo though still nice. There was a C5 @2:11 which got a bit tight I believe though

and since you asked about Ailee crescendo on a resonant note, I just looked up the first IS2 performance that showed up and @1:09 here she has a small crescendo on a resonant A4, not a big one but she did a crescendo. That's just a random performance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOmnfmXlZCc

So I mean she's pretty capable of it.. lol

I'm fine lol

You know I suck at note identification T_T

Hey I got a lot better now while you were gone.

I've been answering about pitch, support, placement and mixing and Ahmin says I've been learning well.

That's good to hear!

What if I cant mix above Bb4, is that fail for a tenor?

No, that's fine.

Then how would you explain that I can't go above G#4 in mix? :._.: I try and I can't, my mix just stops there and... just stops lol

Well, baritones usually have lower placed voices than tenors.

Is it possible to strain from singing too low?

Yes, if you force your larynx down you're straining.

Thank you, so Raina is like Jessica? what about Zhang Liyin?

Raina is better than Jessica. I'm not familiar with Zhang Liyin, could you post some live performances of her singing, please?

oh i see, this is her live perf

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj6_7p1MhCM

From these videos she sounds decentish. She was quite weak in the duet with Chen and he was overpowering her quite a bit. I'll look her up in my spare time to give you a proper analysis.

What's the difference between head, chest and mask resonance? Do they have distinct sounds? Is the resonance created in different chambers?

Yes, they are. Chest resonance mainly occurs in the chest voice when resonating low notes, mask resonance is in the front face and usually occurs in the mid voice/belts, and head resonance is in the upper part of the face (head) and is mainly found in head voice notes and some upper belts depending on the mix of the vocalist.

thanks!

Any distinctive characteristics regarding ring or sound development?

Yes.

Head resonance is a bright sounding resonance.

Mask resonance is your normal, even sounding resonance.

Chest resonance is darker in tone.

Akisame, is there such thing as mix resonance?

Because since mask resonance has nasality I thought it was a different kind of resonance to the usual resonance we talk about here since optimal resonance in upper chest/middle voice doesnt have any nasality (as im taught) and lifting the soft palate eliminate nasality.

Or is it that even with a lifted soft palate sound still resonates in the nasal cavity and sinuses when resonating in middle voice?

Is it just used to make middle notes more forward?

I thought upper chest register/upper middle voice resonance was usually from the opening of the vocal tract (pharynx and larynx) and the sound is resonating from the soft and hard palate?

Mask resonance isn't in the nasal cavities, it's in the sinus cavities. A lot of people get the two mixed up, but they're actually two different things. Also, who said that mask resonance contains nasality? The vibrations should be around one's nose, not in them.

Thanks abra. Its really because of these guys. I still cant properly analyse or have accurate detection of improper or proper technique when analysing performaces. My knowledge base of the theory is improving but my ear isnt improving as fast as i want it to.

Just thank these guys, especially Aly, Ahmin and Niki. But it really started when akisame told me that I dont know shit about vocals and she dragged me. I had joined the vocal thread for about 8 months and I was still talking bullshit. So I really tried hard to ask questions, even though what she said was blunt and harsh. It was true so I wanted to take her word, and improve and take her advice that I shouldnt answer questions unless im confident about my answer. So just ask from these guys and theyll help you. Because of them i really want to join the list of reliable/credible users of the thread in the OP. But it would still be a long time. I havent really improved too much.

its cos I got mixed up with sinuses and nasal cavity and I think. Or was it described to have something to do with the nose when someone here explained it to me. And I thought it might have had some nasality because i remember on Taeyeon's analysis that she doesnt use true nasality, but her placement is forward so I thought it had something to do with resonance than placing her sound through her nose like the rest of the SNSD.

Also, SlayLa I didnt you could be that soft to my homage to you.

Ah, I see.

Haha, I'm not as horrible as seem.

No it didnt

8aukDbq.gif

Only made me more confused

ok_080713_the-hills-lo-face.gif

Lol jokes (sorry its 3:24am here)tumblr_l99prkN2ar1qam0cl.gif

However it did make me confused. I thought risen soft palate was already good placement :wth: (well decent)

So you can still be nasal with a soft palate?

Or is it that although Taeyeon usually sings with a soft palate, her mask placement isnt as good so it goes nasal?

Or is it that Taeyeon usually has good mask placement (which is not true nasality) but doesnt always lift her soft palate (not completely elminated nasality)?

Gurl, you just complicating what Akisame said to me...

Sometimes vocalists get lazy and only raise their soft-palate halfway.

you're normally blunt but you can be lovely like Aly (she aint as blunt as u doe lbr)

You're not horrible (omg while you were gone everyone assumed Aly was horrible it was so funny)

Although that time you want Apeshit X Batshit CRAY CRAY on me. Especially when you called me a Demonic pressed sica stan. I didnt know whether to laugh from shock or be pressed.

update: I love Tiffany now that she improved to being near her.

So is that what is meant my 'does not sing with true nasality'. Their soft palate is risen, just not fully?

How could anyone think Aly is horrible? Yes, the girl is sassy, but she's genuinely good hearted.

Trust me, if you had seen me back on AKP you would not have been pressed over my cuss. I was a billion times more angry (then again the crowd over there was a billion times more delusional!).

As you should!

Yes, that's what is meant and what should be meant if it is not meant.

Hello :D

what do you guys think of Hwanhee's performance here?

Great performance overall but I don't know wtf he was doing at 3:10. Also, lol'ing at the other guy who keeps pulling the microphone away from himself like he's actually got something to be heard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqStzAb8cRI

BREATHTAKING DUET BY SONG SEUNGYEON AND THE ONE  :rlytearpls:

Still not a fan of his voice, but I'm having that climax on replay 'cuz I can't get over how clear and effortless her resonance is, a bless

SHE'S AMAZING!

jos, what is your fav song in mariah's new album? :D

I'm not Josias, but my favourite is "Make It Look Good". The only song I don't like is Camoflauge because it's cringey.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah that part of her vibrato being lost would make her fall behind. Also, I noticed she was pretty inconsistent, but I thought the really high resonant notes would make up for it somewhat...lol nvm my obsession with high notes

Is Seung Yeon like the Hwanhee of the female side??

Resonating higher doesn't make one a great vocalist if they can't resonate properly in their middle voice. Look at Demi Lovato.

Brian is much more ratchet than me. I was gonna call her out on calling Brian "that other guy" like girl. He's not Hwanhee, but Fly To The Sky ain't nugus.

Btw Akisame, can I ask a favor? When a question has already been answered, more importantly video questions, could you instead answer one that hasn't been answered instead of essentially saying the same as someone else who answered it said? Cuz it only piles up answers that are the same and leave questions unanswered still unanswered... So like Yeap.

I'm on my phone so I don't wanna type a lot but she shapes her mouth weird and her sound is generally breathy. She didn't strain bad but her mixing was uneven and too heady.. I've seen her do better, resonance was present at times when she wasn't intentionally swallowing the sound for styling, but the studio version and live band version I saw are better, particularly on the F#5s

Okay so since I figured no one will answer these I'll try it from my phone. The bal was a slight glottal attack, it's like him adding a bit of sexiness, jyeo he half spoke it and made it less sung, the ah was breathy. Those are all styling effects, since Taeyang tends to sing a lot of sexy rnb songs he adds these small sexy effects to his singing. The higher parts at 1:37, he's closing his throat though and supporting less. He's just generally nasal throughout, but you're really nitpicking places he emphasized in lol they're mostly stylistic choices the producer told him to emphasize on when recording probably and yeah Ryeowook just opened his vocal cords too much and let too much breath come through so he lost tone and let more air than true tone come out. The result is just a breathy tone, he wasn't straining his vocal cords, it might show lack of vocal ability and support in his lower range but it's not exactly damaging since he wasn't straining his cords to do it. Lots of vocalists do it in their lower ranges cuz they can't hit the low notes properly.

But I thought I answered all the outstanding questions :/

Also, I won't be able to answer video questions until July because of my internet.

Is there any good/decent vocalist among newer boy groups like Vixx, Exo, BTOB, Got7, History, BAP, etc? And who have better vocalist between groups I mentioned? thankyousm

Vixx: Leo and Ken are decent

BtoB: Sungjae is decent (he resonated a lot in one video) and the best in the group. The rest of the vocal line (can't remember their names) are decent~average.

BAP: are average

Got7: average

History: Idk them but the one in IU's song sounded average.

Exo: Chen and DO are decent idk about the rest.

I'm not going to rank the vocal lines against each other. I hate ranking.

seriously park bom the worst? i agree she's overrated but definitely not worst lol, yeah ailee is probably the best female singer in kpop, what about males?

You asked us for vocalists/singers though, and since Bom is the singer of her group she is the worst. Those Apink members don't even get many lines, anyway.

I was just giving a normal response to a normal question. Sorry if it came across as anything different. And Sohyang does not have more power than LSH, don't know where you got that. But I agree they're both great singers. I personally don't find Sohyang's voice emotional, but I can feel her energy when she gives it her all in her upbeat gospel songs, and I like that.  :ahmagah:

HA.

OMG when i saw you use the bold and the big ass font an HAY HAY.

I was about to use the pic again.

btw

RIP-Park Bom's technique.

If she only took the direction of SNSD's vocalists and improved instead she could be good side of average right now.

What technique are we talking about? lol

How is Christina Aguilera's agility? I know she sucks but her voice sounds really agile most of the time.

Her runs are always sloppy and out of tune
