Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

remember it has to be done correctly. LOL like changing it but still doing the other thing u tried to do with proper technique

My personal view on musicianship is more about...it needs to be done for the purpose of music and the lyrical content, and less about doing it using proper technique (I personally don't think it's /that/ important but to each their own). Changing the song just so you don't need to belt the high note doesn't always contribute to something musically. It doesn't make you emphasize a certain emotion, an important word or group of words in a lyric or anything, so I wouldn't (at least not always) consider that musicianship.

Hmm...I've seen many good singers manipulate a song to suit what they can do. I believe that is musicianship to a certain extent because they are singing a song in way that will suit them and still sound good.

Of course it can. It all depends on how it is done.

That was my point. And which is also why I included that parenthesis.

and then D.O. takes agility, consistency and lower range? or at least kinda? lol

He hasn't been very consistent as of late and I don't think his lower range is better tbh. At least Baekhyun has a bigger tone production in the C3-E3 area with more stability. If we were talking about pre-2014, then I'd agree with Kyungsoo taking the consistency. He really needs to step up his game lmao.

So that's why you wanna redo Kyungsoos analysis.. It sounds as though he's not taking a lead no more not even being even.. But that depends on baekhyuns intonation too

Actually, editing it is just fine. I don't need to redo it by making a new one, lol.

Also, seems like Baekhyun's been working on his A4s. 0:49 was better than the A4s in their past performances of BDC in terms of support. His placement could've been better, though.

Yesung being a spinto tenor is nothing but absurd to me. The description of the spinto voice doesn't fit his voice in any way, shape or form. It's not just about having a dark voice. Spintos have great lower registers. Yesung's is far too weak. Spinto voices cut through the orchestra, producing EQUAL IMMENSE sound output in ALL of their registers. Yesung's voice goes raspy at the increase of his volume to fortissimo, a characteristic of a lyric voice, trained or not, resonant or not. If someone can't produce the equal amount of full volume in all of their registers and loses tonal quality when they increase volume to the max EVEN if they're resonant, you know automatically that they're not a spinto, much less a dramatic. Spintos can do intense, voluminous passages in top volume, in full legato, with ease. Yesung has never shown that nor any characteristics of a spinto voice. His belts, when mixed evenly, SCREAM light lyric.

I don't know about the others mentioned. I'll have to look more into it. But from those videos, PHS sounds like a full lyric or close to a spinto, but I'm leaning more toward the former. Strong and full sound output projection in the lower register with smooth and creamy quality and middle/upper-middle with brightness and bell-like quality of a tenor. Hwanhee's voice doesn't shine the higher he goes and he doesn't possess the brightness, fullness of a tenor in the top notes, so his voice clearly doesn't sit in the tenor area, but he has the weight close to that of a spinto/full. Full-lyric baritone, IMO.

EDIT: The ''steely'' quality you guys hear in Yesung or Haeri's voice isn't really considered steely. Maybe edginess, shrillness, pierceciness would be the better word.

I read that Dramatic Tenors and Lyric Baritones are actually quite similar, and Lyric Baritones are frequently mixed up with Dramatic Tenors, because of the brightness in tone as well as vocal agility. Lyric Baritones begin to switch at around E4 where as Dramatic Tenors do it at F#4. Inbetween those two is Baritenor which is like that inbetween phase, but those guys chose to song Lyric Baritone or Dramaticr Tenor thought I just contribute this.

Switch, as in their first passagi? Because E4 and F#4 are too high. I switch at Eb4/E4 and I'm a light-lyric tenor. Edited by suhunty

When they are going from Chest to head voice, like they're break in between.

I might be misunderstanding this

http://singwise.com/cgi-bin/main.pl?section=articles&doc=DeterminingVocalFach&page=2

Anyway point still remains that those two can be confused for the other..

Ah, what you gave was the 2nd passagi, which is the switch to HV. I thought you meant the 1st one, which is the switch to mix. In the passagi location section of the article, for each vocal fach, the first note represents the 1st passagi, the 2nd note, the 2nd passagi Edited by suhunty

Lol weren't y'all just bashing YG a few days ago for saying "Music should be felt not studied."

I never once thought YG, music and ''felt'' could be put in the same sentence, so I have no clue where the ''bashing'' you speak of comes from.

I don't think he was was trying to shade karaoke singers, he was just saying how some people learn a song perfectly like note by note, rhythm by rhythm and then try to change it around melodically and he instead likes to learn it and listen to the meaning of it and add the meaning of the lyrics to his interpretation instead.

You're probably right, lmao. I'm not really fond of the former because it's implying that they're studying the original singer's phrasing and then changing it around (if that is what Baekhyun meant) without actually paying attention to the meaning of the song and its lyrics. I believe changing it up has to have a musical purpose, which is what he also meant in his musical approach.

yeah gurl back in may/june he said he was gonna do that suho, Baekhyun and IU analysis. Matty has made 15 analyses since then

Suho's not getting one, due to serious lack of material. I'm only going to do Baekhyun's analysis, probably my last one.

Also, I'm doing two versions of it. The first one is more of an appreciation as a fan of his voice (hence more subjectivity content) requested by my friends (because they think the structure and style of the blog are too serious for their personal enjoyment as fans, which I don't disagree). The 2nd one will be for the blog, so I'll just adjust it to an unbiased perspective to fit the criteria and style of the blog.

I'm so impressed by Hyorin. She just came back from a two-hour concert in Manila and you'd EXPECT her to sound tired and just do decently vocally, but no. She literally slayed this entire performance. Her voice was well-projected and resonant THROUGHOUT. I love that clarity, bell-like and pingy quality she had throughout it, which made her stand out. It doesn't matter if Ailee was singing the chorus, was in the backing vocals or not. Compare their column of sound when they were singing their individual parts. Hyorin clearly had a bigger resonance anyway. I too believe that F#5 was resonant, not to mention she growled on another F#5 pleasantly and ending it with a good run.

Ailee did good, I guess. Call me when she finally shows improvement in her breath coordination (a less pushy breath flow) and vocal mixing, though.

Girl, you misread what I said. Nobody ridiculed my singing, they ridiculed me whenever I said something that differed from what THEY said, because I was not allowed to think differently and be right, if I thought differently, I was wrong. My point was, I'm a baritone, and they thought I was a tenor, the other guys are all tenors, and they were called baritones until RECENTLY when Drew finally agreed that they were all tenors. (Except Hwanhee still confused him.) So it's not about my singing, it's about me saying something other people don't agree with and then being ridiculed because I have to be laughed and mocked for thinking differently even if I'm possibly right. Again it's not a tangent either and it's not unrelated, it's not related to you personally, because again I'm sorry I don't think I know you, it was directed at the people who know me and whom I know.

I'm guessing by ''other guys'', you only mean Park Hyoshin, who is the only one out of the ones we've recently talked about that I had claimed to be a baritone back then. But...why are you using us judging his voice type before his voice had even changed to prove your point?

Hwanhee doesn't confuse me as much as your essay.

You also did say that Yesung was a baritone back in the day...Don't you remember? It was even in the analysis you never finished writing. All I'm saying is back in the day, nobody cared what I said and just said I was wrong and then now, y'all are agreeing with me, that they're tenors, for an example. I'm saying, that this could be the case again with certain strained notes from a beloved singer of yours, where some strained notes may come off as resonant to you and maybe they're not, just like Ailee's F#5's that I mentioned that I honestly don't consider really resonant... So my point is, not agreeing with me and brushing me off but me possibly being right, yknow? Take no offense in anything I said, please. But do take the points I'm trying to raise into consideration.

Yes, I did say he could be a baritone or a darkly-colored tenor. We've all said things we don't necessarily agree with anymore. I get your point, but in no way was I saying or implying that you were wrong or insane for thinking that F#5 is throaty/strained...

in other news..... idina menzel fails to even strain out her Eb5 in let it go and instead YELLS a FLAT note with her poor larynx forced to do acrobatics in her throat....

@ 3:28

this cements the fact that she is no longer great or even good... they should have invited willemijn to sing this instead lol

Lmao...well, she sounded kind of better than Mariah's iconic AIWFCIY performance.

Btw, y'all pay no mind to that pixierain user in the previous page. They're a troll.

Ummmm...even if you think I'm a bitch in other threads why does it matter HERE ? I never ,,trolled ,,in this thread and I didn't ask something offending ? You could assume I did with me badmouthing Baekhyun in other threads, but that's unreleveant.

Don't I have a right to simply ask how was Baekhyun in this performance ? Did I say something bad ? I simply heard that he tends to go flat and strain, that's why I asked if he did that here.  I read the OP and imo I have full right to ask a question no matter my behavior on other threads and there's nothing wrong with my question according to the rules.

You're absolutely right. Trolls DO have the right to ask a question and everyone has the right to pay no mind to them.

Uh really? Why? ._. Are they really a troll?

Yes, if you look through their posts. They tend to bash EXO's singing and even ignored your reply to them when they asked why EXO sounded horrible in a Gayo performance (when they actually did not), remember? It's best to ignore people here who are clearly not taking it seriously lmao.

First of all, I tend to bash Baekhyun, not exo. Though mostly just for the hell of it and wanting to see others react, which is stupid, annyoing and just littering OH, of course, but once again, isn't in anyway related to this thread.

Secondly, I asked about the Gayo performance, because I saw many comments about how they sounded bad in comparison with beast and infinite and being an actual Exo-L, I was concerned about them and tried to phrase it in a way, which did't sound like me desperatedly needing confirmation that my baes weren't bad, because biasness isn't welcomed in this thread.

Lastly, I'm sorry, but I didn't actually feel like it was needed of me to reply to AhMin's answer to my question, I'm sorry If I came off as rude. I'm not that good at english, so maybe I misunderstood something .

So once again, since I don't found anything insulting with my question about Baekhyun's singing ( or should I call him Baekyunnie-oppa<3 for people to not think I have malicious intent, just because I'm asking about it ? ) could someone please tell what should I do to perhaps get an answer ? I of course understand if no one is simply interested in answering, but if it's just because of my troll ways elsewhere, then I find it stupid. I now simply wanted to learn something about vocals and so I came here.

Arguing isn't welcomed into this thread, so I apologize for my peace disrupting conduct here.

The fact that you don't expect people to associate your trolling outside this thread to how you are here or to use it to define yourself is fucking dumb lmao. You'll just have to wait for someone here who's willing to take the time to answer your question despite the clear lack of seriousness on your part, I guess. I'm sure someone here would.
