What's the difference between a lyric and a coloratura because Joan Sutherland's voice is light and I thought that's what is characteristic of lyric sopranos but then a website I am on categorized her as coloratura yet Maria Callas is supposedly a lyric which is puzzling the hell out of me. I mean what exactly makes Callas a lyric Soprano? She is very much dramatic and not even light...

Coloratura's actually a technique. People who sings lines that requires coloratura skills are termed as Coloratura.

And Joan Sutherland is a lyric? What? She's actually a Dramatic Coloratura Soprano. And Maria's used to sing Dramatic Coloratura roles from what I've heard.

Where'd you even read that?

Agreed. Though MC actually hits F#5s not F5s in If It's Over xD But soo much accurate than the shit blog by that lesser DivaDevotee.

It was a site that ranked the top ten opera singers of all time. Oh, I actually get it, never mind. Oh and I never said she was a Lyric, I said I thought she was a lyric. She just isn't dramatic to me though. Well, not as I understand the word. She doesn't have the power and fullness to me. She's very light and has quite the control but she's totally not my style. I am not into that light, trills and runs type of things. Nonetheless, I've got to say I'm learning a lot about Opera.

Edit: Her queen of the Night sounded so off to me.

I think I'm developing quite an ear for Opera. I am taking music theory as a GPA booster this semester. Watch out people.

Ahhh Dramatic Coloraturas doesn't have the real power and volume of a Dramatic. Rather they've more agility. That must've confused you then.

IDK I think she has one somewhere. I do know she has resonant G#5s.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! <3

what music theory class.. lol

I said weak average lol like weak ass average, bottom average

YES U CAN. I hate it when certain ppl think they're awesome R&B singers and sing like every line with runs, it takes away from the music so much lol

I am taking a music theory class in college as a GPA booster and credit filler. Yeah, dislike me music folks but honestly, these are the sort of classes that we non majors take to just get those extra credits or boost your GPA. No worries, I've also taken theatre and I am probably taking dance next semester too.

I am only on unit 1, which is the intro but I just feel incredibly lame sitting here and singing pitches. I mean I can at least see the difference but I feel like music has really complicated this Sharps and flats business more than it needs to be. I only took music theory in 6th grade (which is forgotten in a sea of disinterest) but ugh...

I feel your pain. What in theory are you studying right now?

As a coloratura, I morally object to this statement. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY GRATUITOUS RUNS! NEVAAAAAAAAR!!!!!!!!  :twitch:

*Takes a shrinking gun* *shrinks you, places you on grass, puts on soccer cleats and kicks you very far away*

Music theory as a GPA BOOSTER? Geeze, Theory is what brings down the grades of most music majors. It is not an easy class. Maybe your school is different though. If you think sharps and flats are bad, wait until you get to double sharps and double flats and naturals. Or counterpoint and all those strict rules of voice leading. It's ridiculously complicated.

We're only on unit 1. Let's not go to the double sharps please, but yes this is intro to music theory though. There are some music classes you can't take if you're not a major. I am sure there's an advanced class, but this intro class isn't killing anyone any time soon. Plus far more lenient than my economics class.

*squeaks out a two hour long melisma as I fly far away, never to be heard again...............*

Lo and behold, an eagle spots your miniature self flying away.

I see. Yeah, in my school non-majors have to get special permission to take theory so that explains a lot. And economics is damn hard, props.

I am devoured whole by the majestic eagle, yet my voice continues on. For nothing in this world can keep a soloist from showing off. The eagle plummets to the ground. Was it sheer joy or suicide? The world may never know.

But lo and behold, a hyena stumbles on this fallen eagle and thinks "Jackpot!" It doesn't mind the feathers.

Maybe I should give one of you my password and username. I've already done 3 lessons, I just need someone to read the material and do the other two and take the exam for me.

Question: Do any of you guys play an instrument or are you just all about vocals?

Did we? I recall her mentioning it before but I didn't pay attention to it because I don't really follow PHS, but I was going through his latest stuff, as in post army and his voice is like completely different! It's like he's turning into a tenor...

Kelly Clarkson (Not sure bout her being here) > Lady Gaga > Demi Lovato > Adele > Katy Perry > Miley Cyrus > Britney Spears (I guess I mean.)

Lorde is vocally capable? I barely know her sorry.

Amongst these, nobody is a contralto.

so r u gonna show us? can we judge too? lol

Eh, maybe it's because I don't listen to a lot of Adele but she is not that bad, is she?

How would you guys rate KSY? (They YG guy) I don't know his full name, but I feel like he is being severely over estimated.

It is more on theory when you involved interval. You do need Fb, Cb,B# in written form. If you subject required to differentiate C and B#, I believe these notes does exist. I read somewhere, in western music they are actually more than 12 notes in an octave when you involved all the scale keys.

That totally answered nothing but I figured it out anyway after asking the question. The answer was E#

Honestly semantics are something that I don't like to dwell into since we're all taught different things, I wouldn't say Adele has never changed up a performance before, I just find that it's more her style to give a nice clean performance each time, she doesn't change stuff up very often is what I mean

Isn't that a good thing?

PS. I really shouldn't say this among musicians but God, I hate this music class. I have developed a lot of respect for y'all if you can sit through these tedious classes.

thanks!

How were these two vocally?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhlBT2X0Rw4

They are rated as some of the greatest American singers...

Their rating stems from not necessarily vocal ability but what these people brought to music. I bought that rolling stones magazine that ranked the 100 singers of all time and if you think about people like Michael Jackson, James Brown, etc. Their range may not be as great as someone like Whitney Houston but they are distinctly known for their sound and overall well roundedness. To get the title, The Godfather of Soul or The King of Pop means something. Singers that make you go, there will probably never be another Elvis, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson or James Brown. The Beatles though were rated far too highly for my tastes.

Why can't I hit high notes? Like I seriously can't do high notes. I've tried but nope I always go into falsetto... Lol. I even tried the shouting someone's name naturally but once I try to sing it's like wah wah waaaah
