I see. But Minkyung plays a supportive role so I don't get how it hurts their performance.

Makes sense

Yeah but how does nasality matter during performances? I can't notice anything wrong with Minkyung's singing. Her performance level doesn't drop.

Basically nasality means one is not open throated. Also Minkyung strains a lot. She's not bad nor mediocre. She's alright but her and Haeri has a huge difference.

Ock Joo Hyun:

Luna:

Is OJH much better than Luna in this perf?

OJH is much more musical than Luna. She understand the song better than Luna.

It is nasal, not nasality. Nasality you need to twitch your nose to sing. No pop singer will do that unless for a purpose. When you sing, you focus on the nose or nasal cavity, that nasal singing. Soyeon is the extreme of this type of singing for idols.

@akisame:

Thanks. How would you rate Luna's perf: OK, decent or good?

About Park Bom's voice:

You guys said that one of the Bom's weaknesses is her inability to connect her notes, right?

But isn't it her selling point? I mean, the "staccato" thingy (idk the better word :p) makes her voice unique, lol.

It was a nice decent performance, with some good moments.

That isn't staccato, though. She literally cannot connect her notes together because of her shit breath support, her notes are splattered. Idc if it makes her unique.

Hmm... but the question was how it affects the performance.

She always sounds great, even if it's supposedly nasal.

Luna probably did well vocally on that performance but it wasn't anything special anyway, IMO.

Nasality is a technical fault, it means no resonance. Intentional nasality is okay. Unintentional is not. Nasality means the placement is not proper and it also means one is not fully open throated. It affects a performance's technical level.

But doesn't do much in terms of sound?

Read the OP you'll understand the difference between an ideal tone and a nasal/not fully open throated tone. An ideally placed resonant vocal will always drown out the non-resonant sound.

If you ever notice Haeri used a lot more effort than Minkyung in singing.

Haeri will drown out MinKyung...

Yes. If she want too. You know vocal is not about drowning out one and other.

I did... so the only real difference is power? And that it can be more difficult to hit the right note if you sing nasally?

I don't think I've ever noticed Minkyung missing a note... So as long as you know how to handle it nasality isn't and issue?

Also why would you bash Sunny so much in the OP? She's a very good singer IMO. In my top 2 in SNSD...

Note: not vocalist, but I'm sure she's not one of the worst there either...

Sunny is other nasal singer. Her trot songs are good!

lol Don't worry, there are a lot of kpop idols who are really nasal. I'm pretty sure she isn't the worst.

People don't know nasal is loud enough for mic singing, and free a lot of body movement. That why you will see BoA use it most of her time in her complex dance movement.
