Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

Anyone can go on Masked Singer, actors, rappers, newscasters, whoever. The gimmick is guessing who the singer is, not really if they sing super well.

INFINITE L and SJ Shindong went there lmao

I always though it was a "hey you won't believe who this underrated vocalist is, they're actually great" show. You learn something new everyday laugh.png

For actually underrated good vocalist it's I Am A Singer.

an extremely rare audio recording of whitney in japan 1997 singing i will always love you in ORIGINAL key, and sounding like her prime (i.e. late 80s early 90s) despite it being 1997. a must listen of the queen of resonance

That happens more as a result of the format. They can only have a person compete once, so they go through more guest than IS or Duet or I Am a Singer. So people who aren't currently popular or known can book the gig.

But that's more like for veterans like Sohyang and Lena Park lol

It's kind of a show for underrated veteran vocalist. That's probably why Park HyoShin/Lee Sun Hee etc never went. But isn't like it's ONLY for underrated since Hyorin also went there.

I wanted to ask something since Jungkook went there

Has there been a time where one of the judges actually adviced the singer instead of just praising?

Since a lot of people tend to criticize Jungkook´s breathing when he sings but he was praised there because of that (i really like it too lol)

I'm not sure...

Maybe if one of the judges was a veteran singer. Sometimes they tend to criticize but what they say ends up by wrong too lol.

But I don't think many people complain about Jungkook's technique. He tends to be very airy but people usually count that as a beautiful tone or timbre. I haven't seen anybody criticize JYP's (artists and himself lol) technique of 'half air half sound', I dont see why they would comment on Jungkook's, who's style is essentially the same.

The panel of judges for MS is just other celebrities. Normally a few variety personalities, a few idols, a few singers/rapper. They're not trainers, so idt they're qualified to do that.

Literally one of the reasons I cannot stand Korean television at times. The over the top reactions are just too much for no reason. Also, they replay the same like half a second numerous times so that we can see everyone's reactions, when I literally just want to hear the rest of the song.

Like seriously

I was so annoyed...not only is this guy a weak vocalist, but the replays were just too much for me lol.

Analysis on this please?

I think this is the very first time Rosé does a performance that showcase her vocals, i'm curious about technique now that we got to hear her singing more seriously without sticking to her usual style.

This is more of an opinion of mine, but to me it seems like her technique would sound much better if she stopped singing with that strange tone. Somewhere along the line of being a trainee she was taught that having a unique vocal color was more important than anything else, it's really a shame.

0:14 ~ 0:22 A3’s and G3’s, her vocal cords did not connect properly at any point during this portion of the verse. All I heard was a lot of airiness, where the sound was really unsupported due to the lack of proper stretch of her vocal cords. 0:23 D4 here she starts to actually use her vocal cords to connect her sound more. 0:24 ~ 0:27 F3’s as well, no support. 0:33 E4’s, now the sound is a lot better produced. 0:51 A4’s, she lacks openness and her throat isn’t fully relaxed. 0:58 she still sounds fairly nasal. 1:05 1:08 Bb4’s she doesn’t have proper support here at all. 1:13 this A4 was her strongest attempt at actually supporting her voice in her mixed voice. She was still somewhat throaty and her vibrato is really wobbly, but this is her least squeezed/nasal A4 I’ve heard so far from many performances. 1:28 falsetto, adequate pitch though the transition lacked smoothness. 1:30 quick mixed C5, followed by a tight Bb4. I wouldn’t say A4’s are fully supported for her but they’re the limit of where she is able to vocalize without as much tension, Bb4 and anywhere above that she starts to become fairly throaty. Due to her support not being very strong, her vibrato is very shaky and that’s because of the tension in her throat as well as the unsteady airflow in her singing. Also FYI I listened to the full video just to make sure I didn’t miss anything but the rest of the song is basically the same technically. I think Rosé’s bad vocal habits with her stylistic choices are too strongly ingrained in her singing, so even when she attempts to sing a song like this that requires actual technique, it’s possible to hear a struggle to get away from her usual style. She sounds really like she’s having a hard time around the A4 ~ C5 range, which for any soprano with some basis of technique should not be a problem. This does show us the extent of her technical ability.

Thank you very much for your imput!

I was thinking the same regarding the first part of the performance+Her vibrato.

Seeing all the idol group vocalists from YG we can pretty much confirm that YG focus more on vocal color than technicality, a lot of wasted potential there imo, since this causes their vocals to get worse over the years.

I know using official audios is not reliable to judge someone's vocal ability seeing as there are editing effects like pitch correction and autotune, but rather than vocal ability this is more about her voice itself and I would like to note that Rosé's voice sounded richer on that GD song (At least to me) which goes to show how harmful this actually is for the singers

Someone once told me that YG thinks proper vocal technique ruins unique tones/vocal colors. I didn't find a source for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he thought that which is so ridiculous because there are singers with interesting tones who have good vocal technique or at least average.
