Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

VISION

Recommended Posts

Well as you probably all know (since I've been complaining about it constantly) I'm sick, but I've still been wanting to share something of me singing, especially now that everybody else has been. SO! I dug up (seriously, I turned my bedside table and desk drawers upside down) the CD of my old scholarship performance I did back at the end of high school. I was put up a year, so I was 17, and it was about two and a half years ago.

I cut out just the part of me singing Part of Your World (yes, from the Little Mermaid) acapella:

https://soundcloud.com/jstarfully/part-of-your-world

I'll be over here cringing over my pronunciation and the way I hit high notes back then.

Slayyyy queeen. Do you go to a music school or something?? It sounds very musical theatre like.

I didn't, and when I listened to it like an hour ago after I dug up the CD I was very surprised... and then I cringed because I never listen to myself and I hate it. I still haven't listened to the other four songs I did lmao

Sameeeee everyone's voice always sounds so different so now when I sing I literally place two folders in front of my ear to hear my actual voice.

I have literally zero clue I'm so bad at describing stuff like that unless it's something super duper obvious. What would you call mine? :imstupid:

Well from the SoundCloud you sent, your voice is very clear in tone but with a punch in your voice. I feel like it's orange with somewhat twangy. It has a youthful quality to it, and doesn't have much raspiness. So probably you're an orange.

Oooooooh I feel like that's accurate!! You're good at that dude :ahmagah:

Lol well I specialise in classical piano and in some of my exams we had to describe the quality, tone and colour of chords etc and how composers evoked different blah blah blah and such. I liked describing people as delicious food tho hehe

I'm pretty much tone deaf :rlytearpls:

It's totally fixable!!! Do you play any instruments?? I suggest you pick one up(piano pls since I'm biased hehe). It also would help if you constantly record yourself, plug one of your ears and use two folders or books to put in front of your ears to check pitch accuracy. Keep practicing!!!, no one is doomed to eternal tone deafness lol.

It depends, but generally i think it sounds like coffee with a bit of creamer to make it smooth and generally more pleasing lol. What do you think it sounds like?

Your voice has this warm smoothness but it also has some husky matured feel to it. you definetly feel like a coffee(not too rich) with some creamer and no sugar. I'm seeing creamy light brown as your vocal colour. It's hard to put a fruit to your voice, you fit more with liquids.

I'm amazed by how you guys can describe vocal tones lol

I love it, it's a secret hobby of mine. You should try it!!! You might turn out to be a blue Hawaiin coconut sprinkled with Indian spices served with onion slices and a red forest cake side dish. Damn this is making me hungry.

Lol no fruits lol. This is funny because in my voice class, after we preformed for each other, for like a grade, we would have a discussion and i would always use food tp describe someone's voice lol my teacher told me to stop that lol.

My piano teacher scolds me too as well lol especially since I do CLASSICAL PIANO. I can literally describe Sonatas using a McDonald's happy meal.

Omg yall need to stop making me hungry at work >8(

Tenor here Im thinking smallest/highest due to hormonal imbalance lol. How would you describe my tone?

Sent from my LG-D852 using OneHallyu mobile app

What do you mean by smallest/highest??? I might be able to one up you as a very high and light tenor.

Do you have receipts? I'm happy to make a meal plan for you.

Hmm you sound like a normal tenor, not too high or light at all. Nice voice.

I keep imagining you as a chicken wrap with frozen blueberry drink and crunchy lettuce.

well you could PM me them and I'll tell you

and just so there's no confusion, I meant that it may not be likely that you would become what is called a leggero in classical. I didn't mean that you'd be a lower tenor. A leggero is the lightest weight of voice and is an uncommon type of tenor (sopranos can be leggero as well, sometimes known as soubrette by the French), less common than a lyric which is the second heaviest and most common type of tenor, and also less common than a spinto which is the third heaviest and second most common type of tenor. that's all I'm gonna say on that, if u have any questions don't ask it doesn't matter in pop LOL

DO IT, especially the drunk ones

Would it be possible for my voice to be a leggero tenor?? It's really light and bright. Edited by BabyKBK

I went to bed and when I came back there were like two and a half new pages on the thread but none of the posts were critiques on my technique :rlytearpls:

It's okay guys, I'll just be over here eating wonton soup. One day I'll get over it :._.:

Yaaas wontonnnnssss are my fav. I think the reason why no one replied is cause as you noted, that was a very old clip of you singing so your current technique is different. Do you have any new material?

Lol, haven't checked in like, 24 hours and you guys went to some very interesting conversations lol. From describing your voices as food and beverages...to sounding like semen. Yep, very interesting :')

For the record, I feel like my voice is like, assorted sweets lol. It's rarely ever dark unless I go down to like, an Eb2. But I'm that's because of my age (keep it 18- people lmao)

And you guys be talking about how you're inconsistent on Eb4s and complain bout that stuff when I still push the hell out of my Bb3s. R.I.P Myself.

Your lower range probably slays us tho and I'm a minor too!!. I can only get down to C3. Are you a bass??? Bb3 is comfortably chest for me and I'm a tenor. Edited by BabyKBK

I'm a baritone lol. I can get down to like, C#2. I don't think I lower my larynx tho so that's the only sense of achievement I have lol. Bb3 is comfortable for you? My chest range is like...comfortable an octave below that

My chest goes until D4/D#4. In the past did you only explore and sing in your lower range? That could be why. Cause I used to only sing above C4 and my lower was so unexplored to the point where even a G3 required a very conscious effort. Edited by BabyKBK

Well, I was self taught for a long time and read a lot of classical theory and listened to a lot of classical music to learn. Then when I needed help to mix properly for modern music, I got a tutor. Does that help?

Also, how come? Hahaha I'm just curious

I had a tutor for like 4 weeks when I was younger cause puberty messes you up. He taught me to sing with 80% head to combat the effects of puberty range loss but I quit after my range kinda recovered so I didn't learn to mix balanced. Will probably get one after exams. Edited by BabyKBK

I used to have a SEVERE high larynx problem and I practiced lowering my largynx slightly whenever I sang and putting my fingers on top of my Adam's apple to act as warning to not use high larynx lol. Lowering the larynx is ok if it's slight but just don't go full Christina Aguilera style.

Hello, I'm kinda new to this thread but can somebody check my cover if I'm straining a lot when singing. Thanks! https://m.soundcloud.com/reian-vincent/new-recording-237

Sent from my iPhone using OneHallyu

From what I can hear not really too much strain. You're singing in a very safe B3-G4. The final G4 "Better" did sound a bit pushed tho. Nice voice and decent pitch tho:) are you a Filipino?? Your accent sounds familiar Edited by BabyKBK

Yes. I'm a filipino. Are you? Oh and do you think my voice would be a baritone? Because I can't reach notes pass a g4 unless I'm using my falsetto.

Sent from my iPhone using OneHallyu mobile app

I'm Chinese haha. You sound like a tenor. I'm a tenor too!! I think the reason why you can't go above G4 is because you're underdeveloped and haven't found your head voice yet. Once you can connect your head voice your range will expand and no need for falsetto. Try to not use falsetto too much, it's not the healthiest especially if it's overly breathy. You can find some "how to find your head voice" videos on YouTube, I think the channel "kitsunemale" has one that can help. Kitsunemale is also a commenter on this forum, known as Ahmin. Fighting!!
