Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

I think you guys should post this somewhere on the front page of your blog, as an answer to everytime someone starts talking about emotions and expressiveness and why technique doesn't matter

"Technique is like the left hand of driving. Expressive singing is the right hand. You need both hands on the wheel to drive a successful musical performance. A healthy, reliable method of singing gives you the ability to be expressive in a free, unimpeded way, with a consistent, attractive tone quality through a large pitch and dynamic range."

"Unlike instrumentalists, singers must communicate not only through music, but additionally, through words. Singers are actors as well as musicians and must reveal the emotions behind the lyrics as well as the passion of the musical phrase. Good technical development is not an end unto itself. It is a means for empowering the singer to express those emotions freely and poignantly. I am interested in helping the student be empowered to reach their goals as singers and musicians."

How is Subin doing throughout in these recent videos? She's seems better compared to other performances by her I've seen posted in here before.

Better in what way if you don't mind me asking? All I heard was pretty decent pitch aside from her runs, a LOT of air in her falsetto and very obvious throaty straining in her mix starting from B4, but tension and a closed throat are already present around A4. So I don't know if I hear anything different since I don't listen to her much.

This was the last performance by Subin that was posted in here:

I thought that compared to the that video, she was less pitchy and was able to sound a little less throaty. But I guess I'm wrong. Sorry. I'm not sure how to go about training my ear haha.

Oh you're probably right about the pitchiness! I just didn't know what performance you were referring to.

so I was curious about what the vocal instructor is telling Minzy, can anyone here translate it??

it starts at 0:45

Most SM vocal instructors if not all are SLS instructors. What he was teaching her was basically that 1. She shouldn't try to pull her chest voice up to get the note out, but instead bring the sound down from the head voice and then allow it to mix with the chest voice so as to create a more natural mix. 2. Also not to use air to push the sound, like using the H sound like he demonstrated.

He seems pretty good at it then! What are the other methods to teach singing besides SLS?

umm the only other name that comes to mind other than Bel Canto is CVT / Complete Vocal Technique. The one that uses terms like curbing and overdrive

He's just repeating the same syllable and decreasing volume each time..it's like an echo effect.

there's also stuff like Estill Voice Training, idk wtf they do though

CVT seems to have worked with a lot of book smart scientists and technology to do tests with, but they cannot even tell that the singers they use are not good in the first place. They say male opera singers use overdrive and then they show some random and very flawed classical singer o_o

In most cases today, Bel Canto is just a fancy label. you have to be able to distinguish how the old Italian opera singers sang and how they did it in order to understand true Bel Canto.

personally I like functional singing technique, which started with Bel Canto. The name is quite plain and literal LOL, but that's the point. It is about understanding physiology and the way the voice functions. And just as importantly as that, it is about training the ear to recognize the physiological conditions that correspond to the sounds that you hear in singing. It is not about promoting just one larynx position as being the only way that good singers use; you are free to sing neutral, low, in between or a mix of them all (like some of the recent examples of non-classical singers I gave) if you'd like but just do it as functionally correct as possible.
