do you guys remember this mess?  0u0plz.png

Can someone explain what was so bad about this?  I know Choa was pushing a bit but she still hit the right notes and had fullness to her voice right?  The other girls seemed to sound perfect, minus the one girl with the long orange hair during her high notes (it sounded kinda sharp).

I think the discussion about that performance started here: https://onehallyu.com/topic/552-official-vocals-thread-read-op-first/page-2409?do=findComment&comment=16185956

If you follow the comments below you might get an idea.

Wouldn't a voice producing higher frequencies just mean hitting higher notes?

The perceived pitch of a note is its fundamental frequency, but acoustic energy also goes into overtones/harmonics of the fundamental, and it is these higher frequencies that are largely responsible for the "character" of the sound. By modifying placement, etc. vocal resonance can be adjusted to put more energy into particular overtones, as with the singer's formant or for an extreme example,

I don't think fullness would be the right word. Choa was definitely pushing more than just a little bit. Choa had major tongue tension and hella closed trying to sustain the C#5s/C5s and phrasing the B4s, along with a shaky falsetto. 2:47 was just so tense, swallowed. Chandelier has a fair amount of notes outside of Choa's supported range, so it's to be expected. The song in general wasn't exactly the best performance by any of them (I dunno about the girl people keep thinking is Jimin tho). They've performed better

any of them ?

Obv im not saying that SSY and Ailee did poorly :derp: it's just the whole thing really was awkward like SSY's transitions into head voice were awkward with the EE vowel and Ailee had that vowel shaping thing that isn't objectively "bad" but subjectively I would've liked for her to like... Sound as huge as SSY for example :imstupid:

Hey guys just passing by to ask (if i can of course)

Where would Bruno Mars be placed as a vocalist? Is he above average, good and such

I got curious since i was listening to him and was watching a live performance, he always seems to be able to hit high notes or perform overall without much effort but thats just me.

Sorry for the random question lol

If you search the thread, it's been said that Bruno Mars isn't very much of a technical singer. He can mix high, sure, but it's pretty much the result of using his throat and relying on tension to be able to mix that high rather than relying on good muscle coordination and breath supportunsure.png

Just because someone doesn't possess divine technical mastery of their voice doesn't mean that you can't enjoy their singing hahaha

Plus Bruno Mars is pretty good when he's not overextending himself. Also, I think his signature song-writing style is the most amazing thing he has going for him, he's a crazy good writer and producer, although he does work with others of course.

she went for the B5 ya'll! I expected her to leave it to the backtrack haha

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9mYZsylXng

for reference on how she did:

I would say I agree with you. I’d actually say the G3’s have a slightly lowered larynx but they’re pretty nice, it’s just a bit of a push that she could relax more upon. The D5’s seem slightly pushed with good placement, the 3:03 did seem like the best one out of the three! She’s using a bit too much throat to push, just a tad bit too much that she could relax on. The placement is really good, she just needs to pull back on the pushing a tad. 3:30 Oh she actually went for the B5.

I'd really love to hear your opinions on this article. Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry but what opinion is there to give? This is an article written in a sarcastic disrespectful tone, from a physics point of view without a vocal knowledge nor understanding. He's not even taking a jab at us only, he's taking a jab at the whole concept of vocal technique and singing ability, as if singing technique wasn't important at all. That shows clear ignorance when it comes to vocal instruction. For someone who simply thinks that vocal technique isn't important at all he sure seems very passionate about debunking it but I digress. I hope he's happy and feels fulfilled while we lead our happy lives in peace. Edited by AhMin
