What would you guys look for/what questions asked when looking for a vocal coach?

I'm not interested in singing professionally or anything, just want to improve my high range and not sound so bad after A4 / be able to hit notes higher than C#5 consistently/properly if possible, learn how to breathe and use mixed voice / head voice better.

I'd ask them about what they think about Christina Aguilera, if they say she's good, run like the wind.

LOL I'd like to improve my middle voice as much as I can. Also I want my coach to be very strict and nagging because I'm a very lazy person LOL I'm sure I'll not practice unless the coach pesters me into it xD

I only know SLS which I think the most spread throughout the world. But they are aim at professional as their fee is high. Anyway, you should gather a few song or artist that you like and ask around which school are closer. to your liking Guess I can't be anyway help, cos I lived small country, Singapore. I can easily find a professional coach in my country.

Ah yeah  :._.:   I live in the middle of nowhere in the USA, so it'll be harder I think.  I'll look up SLS, tyvm for advice~

Re: C. Aguilera - haha :D  I also want a strict coach (I don't like coaches who try to be nice and not say what needs to be said sometimes, I can take the criticism.  My piano professor was a complete dragon, firebreathing scary person :omg:  If I repeated any mistakes from a previous class she'd be all  :fyeah:  :donthinkso:  :omgwtf: and hammer it into me not to do it again  -- was so awesome.)

SLS is not reliable.

SLS is not reliable.

Ah  :._.:   I didn't even know there were different teaching methods, I was reading up on it and saw posts like classical vs SLS --- it's like suzuki method (for instruments) then? It's popular but controversial... I didn't use it when I was younger because my grandmother hated that it didn't focus on learning how to read music early on (she plays piano too).

SLS is not reliable to use throughout the range. It barely talks about breathe support and resonance. I'd advice you to look into classical techniques if you want.

Haha I want a coach like that LOL Who's scary like that so that I can actually improve xD I can take criticism too. I don't need a sugarcoater XD

Classical is the best technique, SLS is singing like you speak, which is stupid because you use different registers for singing. SLS barely talks about breath support either.

Most of the SLS is not about talking. A lot of drilling exercise. Ask Ahmin, he go through this before.

Classical is up right "support" and "resonance" , but you must love singing classical songs. For pop/improvising music, it is not necessary to read score in detail. If you can read fake sheet, you are fine enough.

It will be really stupid to learn SLS for classical songs. I guess you don't know what SLS is trying to achieve.

Seriously, are we even sure that those Bb4s were open-throated? Not to me. I listened to it again and they were no overtones. Seohyun has been more consistent during their Japanese Tour where I recall she has done more OK C#5s than Jessica. It's safe to say they're still even now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG2OxVq3obU

Example: Compare 2:02 vs 2:55. One's C#5 was clearly less tense than the other. It was like that in other concert dates too.

defs Soehyun. But can I hear those "open throated" notes by Jessica? I wanna see what they sound like...I don't remember them at all

I'd ask them about what they think about Christina Aguilera, if they say she's good, run like the wind.

how would you guys rate nsync vocally?

i would say jc>>>>>jt>>>>chris>>>>joey>>>>>>lance

I don't know N*Sync well at all, sowwie.

I would suggest two things. One, don't do only one way of singing. If you go for a classical, Bel Canto person, you will need to let them know your aim is not to sound classical, if you go to an SLS person, you need to know if they have had any idea what support and resonance are all about. I would personally...well, I love the fact that at school here, you have teachers with open counselling, so I can get tips from both. Currently, I'm not doing either SLS nor Bel Canto, but I've experienced both, and if you get both together, it's a great mix, it will balance you out very well. Right now, I'm with a guy who will work primarily on strengthening my chest voice and head voice separately first, then bringing it into a mix. I got it all, but my head voice is too loud and not controlled and my chest doesn't carry through to my mix hence my mix can be too heady and only really healthy, but not resonant.  So yeah, it's a balance I suppose.

what is sunye's best vocal performance?

You Raise Me Up. Nicely done F3 in the beginning, resonant C5's, C#5's and D5's during the song, and correct use of head voice instead of falsetto throughout the song~

what do you guys think about Sandi Patti. Shes an amazing gospel singer like Sohyang. She has a lighter and brighter vocal timbre like Jodi Benson.

Me and my parents were just listening to her CD where she was 26, and there was an optimally resonated an E5 and uses mezzo soprano a few times, and 1 head placed note. Im just not bothered finding it.

Tell them your interest and what you want to do musically.

Things to always look out for during conversations.

*Learning to breath

*Proper placement

They might say it in their own way or something but it's generally the same. Make sure they have some form of music degree.

With my Professor I told him my vocal influences.

Mariah

Whitney

Naul(I showed him naul from BES)

And he knew alot of what he was talking about when we talked about these singers and he mentioned Mariah's speed,Whitney's power, etc.

When I showed him Naul he basically said thats how he is gonna train me to sing with a forward placement. And he said that he will not teach me "Style" That i should develop my own vocal styling on my own.

It was mentioned that alot of vocal instructors teach their students their "stylings" and they become clones. He just said he is there to teach me the proper form of singing. Which is all I want and all you should want too.

Right now I'm trying to make lifting my soft-palette second nature. So we are doing scales with a Happy face. I'm concious of my soft palette but he says I should be conscious of it and it should lift on it's own the minute I sing.

By the way true Diaphramic breathing is a shit ton of work. >.< But it's fun in a way lol.
