the first video

2:18 - 2:30: Airy Sharp G3 with a very high larynx, A3s unsupported but her B3s have some tone

3:18 - 3:39 She supports but at times has some throat/tongue tension. A4 at 3:18 was ok as in that they have/are supported, but her A4s here sound ok. She doesnt go higher than A4 here

4:12 - 4:27 She starts with a strained D5, and the climax notes here (D5s) are high larynxed so they are strained, her A4s and B4s here are support but they have some tension.

The guy has very very little support with his voice, he has a throaty tone.

[/media

0:14 - 0:33 Kyla is being stylistic here but she has a very airy falsetto and improper vibrato

1:29 - 1:50 Kyla has support but lacks some depth at times, she is more of a stylistic singer. 1:45 was a strained D5-C#5 followed by a throaty B4 with good placement

2:12 - 2:20  I think the guy is a baritone and is supported. His runs arent accurate but not bad. He sounds pretty decent actually.

3:04 - 4:06 Once again the run was too fast and complex for the guy, The girl is doing fine until that sustained B4 where it has tongue tension but the Daryl's E4 is ok.3:30 supported non nasal A4, 3:35 those A4s are tense for daryl, 3:40 for kyla the  B4 sounds supported but the A4 after sounds resonant. 3:47 strained D5, E5s, the guy is going throaty on those A4s, 4:00 strained E5 followed by a closed B4 perhaps by tongue tension.

No, you can't really sing when you are having an asthma attack.

i ask3e because as a person with athsma i dont think it has any other side effects on tbe body.

So we naturally dont breathe as properly as other people?

I guess thats why i feel like i even have bad breath management while talking

Well, you wouldn't really notice because you live with it you have nothing to compare it to.

Well, yeah, asthma affects the breathing mechanism even if you're not having an attack.

mindblown

So i have a handicap when learning to sing?

I tried imitating my friend's voice and i realise how more steady his air flow is when talking.

Yes, you can think of it as a handicap. It's like being deaf in one ear like TaeHyung. You can learn to overcome it because with the intense breathing that correct singing requires your lungs will strengthen and will be able to take more efficient breaths.

Hi, can you please tell me how Chaewon did here?

3;12 -3:33

3:51-3:56

3:21  nicely placed and supported A4-B4 but her vibrato is way to fast same with at 3:30, then tense D5 but it wasnt that bad because the mix was even so it wasnt as strained, 3:21 throaty D5, 3:26 tense D5, 3:51 nice B4 followed by another nicely supported sustained B4

do you think she will improve?

it's been awhile since they perform live lol

@ 1:44

what about chungha @ 2:43

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFFAF2QqBtY

strained F#5 for joo gyulgyung. A4s, B4s werent too bad for chungha. They weren't strained per se but she doesnt have true support and that D5 was tense.

Theyre still really young so theyre still at a good age to improve

So Ive done about 4 lessons with Matheus and this is what i learned

Matheus Is a very good teacher. He has very appropriate exercises straight from the beginning. They arent difficult but he really works on every issue you have; there is literally an exercises for each issue.

Literally he is queen of kpop vocals. Within 4 lessons I have learned to mask place, open up and apply relaxed support. Its just difficult to apply it into songs but he really went through it with me and addressed other bad singing habits that arent necessarily got to do with technique with breath support etc etc especially since I have a bad habit of sliding and wobbly vibrato when I sustain/end notes.

For our latest lesson today I finally for the 1st truly supported. I am now able to truly support on the A vowel with some consistency. Mind you not I was sick, and we had to skip a week and it had to be cut short from 30-40 mins.

I surprisingly learned that my headvoice was actually better than my lower register. My head placement isnt bad and I could sustain a relaxed tone up to F#5/G5. I was also surprised that my supported range is already average but I just needed to learn how to truly support and support more consistently.

Hopefully by the end of this month I should be securely average.

Then resonance would be next.

Honestly I am happy Taeyeon any more. The amount of bleach treatments and hair dye used for maintaining it could not have been healthy for her hair. I really hope it isn't like fried... Also her hair is back to the length it was before she cut it...due to hair damage...lol

not to mention stress

I wasn't talking to everybody in this thread actually. I was talking to those of you who planned to get together and make a cover. I didn't ask rather or not you listened to them. Now out of all of the people that comes on to this thread I know one person that is involved in this saw it. This is not the first, second, or third time I've asked about something and just been ignored. You haven't been here the whole time that I have so I don't expect for you to get it. I have done nothing but be one of the most understanding and cooperative member on this thread. I've never given anyone any trouble here and never planned on it. I have sat back and kept my mouth shut as things were said and done that I didn't agree with. So out of everyone here I'm the last person to demand something from any of you. Even if black pink wasn't a vocal group I still might have had a question that could have helped me out because I'm someone trying to learn about vocals. but how would you know that unless you've seen my question? Black pink isn't considered a vocal group to you all but neither are some other groups and people still ask questions about them and get those questions answered. You never know what a user has in mind until you go through their heads.

Anyways it was nice meeting you and everyone in this thread and I hope you all have a great time on onehallyu.

Thank you to ahmin for everything and i hope you keep this thread running so others can benefit. Dan, Messica, Anthony and the rest I will miss you all and I hope you can reach your best potential in the future. Thank you for the laughter and the joy. If anyone sees VT Queen again tell them Carebear says thank you for all of their help.

Goodbye and take care.

BYE BOO ILL MISS YOU.

you've contributed a lot to the discussion here. I will always remember you for actually giving VTBOYS a video for your cover.

Sorry i didnt know we had other plans for a cover.

Im very touched that you will miss me despite me being a mess like always.

Please comeback again and when i bring more uneccessary tea in this thread!

What do you guys think of Jane Zhang based on this vocal range video? She seems to have changed her technique can anyone give some thoughts.

She sounds like a spinto soprano

She has good and consistent support, placement, head voice has good agility as well and she switches well between head voice and her mixed voice. She can have a overly chest approach to her mix. Has has some tongue tension, jaw tension at times and her throat closes.

Her supported range is E3-D5-E6/F6 low notes to mixed voice to head voice. She is like Lena Park but her mixed register is more balanced and more consistently resonant and supported. She is slightly pinched on F6/F#6. So she is probably good to great as her mixed range puts her down as it is the least developed. Very consistent and good column of sound.

She has a great lower register, great head voice but a competent mixed range.

Jane Zhang is also very agile, I was surprised to hear another vocalist so similar to Lena Park

How do you guys think about that G4 (watch at 2:35)

And G4 in that video, which is more supported? (watch at 1:02)

Umm... please check again, I think the first one is resonant and the second is closed throat and quite pushed.

The 2nd one is just mixed lighter, headier and softer, with less chest resonance.

Is she a spinto, I've seen people who classify her as a spinto and people who say she's a light lyric but I thought those two were very different things. What's the difference between a spinto soprano, mezzo soprano and full lyric soprano?

Im honestly not sure if she is a spinto, but she could be a full lyric soprano to me\

Im not particularly good at vocal fach/types, im just a casual giving it a go.

This is a full lyric soprano

So the 3 main female vocal types are Contralto, Mezzo Soprano and Soprano. They are separated mainly by the passagi of the vocalist or in other words the notes where they automatically go from a chest voice to a mix voice and mix voice to head voice.

In case you didnt know.

Dramatic Soprano, Spinto Soprano, Full lyric Soprano and Light Lyric soprano all fall into the soprano category. If not, it would have mezzo after dramatic/full/light and before soprano.

As such, Spinto, Full lyric and Light lyric sopranos have the same if not almost the same passagio so they all fall into soprano. The differences are in the weight/quality of their voice and thickness of vocal chords but its easier to differentiate using their vocal weight. Spinto sopranos have a steely quality compared to the FLS and LLS and it is between dramatic and lyric (FLS and LLS). When talking about Lyric sopranos, it means they have a bright and warm vocal colour/quality to their voice, but FLS are mature sounding while LLS are youthful sounding.

Sohyang is a spinto

This is a list from the Original Post giving examples for female vocalists for each voice type

  • Lyric Coloratura Soprano: Mariah Carey during her prime
  • Light Lyric Soprano: 98% of female idol vocalists in K-pop, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, Lea Michele, Leona Lewis, etc.
  • Full Lyric Soprano: Celine Dion, Lara Fabian, Seeya's Yeonji, Ock Joohyun, Big Mama's Young Hyun, CSJH's Lina, Apink's Eunji etc.
  • Spinto Soprano: Sohyang, Whitney Houston during her prime
  • Dramatic Soprano: Patti Labelle, Monica Naranjo
  • Soprano Falcon: Vanessa Amorosi
  • Lyric Coloratura Mezzo-Soprano: Beyonce
  • Lyric Mezzo-Soprano: Barbra Streisand, Big Mama's Jiyoung, Lea Salonga, etc
  • Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano: Anastasia
  • Lyric Contralto: Cher
  • Coloratura Contralto: Annie Lenox

I knew I loved Judy Kuhn(voice of Pocahontas) for a good reason

Listen to that head voice High B(B5) at 3:44 great tone production, vibrato, support, co-ordination.. I honestly feel she's one the best vocalist Disney pulled in to voice their princesses.

Compare Judy's B5 to Laura's what differences do you hear?

It's the same song.

Laura's one was uneven and slightly shrill?
