Males' head voices cannot be pure head voice... They are basically extremely heady mix.

Sohyang has like 1 C6 in mixed LOL Cheryl Linn (highest is an Eb6 mixed), Vanessa Amorosi, Aretha, Patti, Monica Naranjo, black gospel singers etc sings that high in mixed voice too much. Such show offs IMO

 

This is why I love Mariah. She doesn't sustain notes above F#5 in mixed voice much. So her upper belts are so relevant to the song rather than being a high note show off.

I don't look at it as showing off, considering how that is the Gospel style and they are trained to sing like that..it isn't like they are like "Hey, let's put this random B5 in here"

Hi, I'm new to this thread (though I posted a few times in the older allkpop incarnation). I know nothing about vocals, though I have perfect pitch and some musical training. I find the discussion here fairly informative and offer my thanks to all contributors. I also thank whoever made the "Park Bom worst vocalist" video for giving me a good laugh. :-)

 

I'm trying to figure out the distinction, if any, between resonance and "the ring". In BZBlaner's resonance video (the one linked in the OP), there's a clip from a BBC program where they show a spectrogram of a guy singing naively versus projected. The projected version shows really strong overtones in the 2-4 kHz range, which I guess would correspond to a bright, piercing quality in the sound. I surmise that this is "the ring". So what would a resonant note be if it didn't have this ringing quality to it?

 

Somewhat against my better judgement, I am a huge Taeyeon fan, so let me ask about one of her performances. According to previous discussion, her C5s in the

were resonant (1:42, 1:55, 2:52). Is "the ring" present? I think I hear a bit of it especially at 2:52. But whatever it is that I'm hearing, I also think I hear it in the sustained Bb5 at 2:59.

There's no Bb5 in LiL....

She's just bad. Loads of intonation issues. Her larynx goes up very much. Prolly worse than Hyuna.

but isn't hyemi and hyuna from 9M bad. Hyemi can't hit an E5(or was it F5. It was in their cover of Baby Vox's song get up) without cracking. The group barely hit anything higher than C5 though or even B4. They have quite talent and potential though. To see if hyuna is better than Tiffany we need to see her hit higher than C5.

Their chorus are usually set above Bs. Hyemi does an E5 or Eb5 in News. She hasn't cracked them but they r all horrible. And everyone in NM is bad.

 

If Sandi was Sohyang's level then anyone here would've talked abt her. And if you post like 3-4 videos at once no one'll bother with it. Plus you were the one who brought up Sica, and Seo for pages. Don't act like you did not.

 

R&B and Pop are very similar.

Girl R&B and Pop are NOTHING similar. Though contemporary R&B and Pop are usually mixed up.

I don't think so. Krystal is still a lot more stable than Sooyoung.

Don't give me. When you post, post like 1-2 videos. Most won't watch 3-4 videos and will largely ignore the whole posts.

 

They are bad. Around Krystal level bad. Bom is not bad, she's terrible.

Counter tenor is a male voice type which predominantly sings using reinforced falsettos. It's not really used outside opera and choir, because most of them don't use reinforced falsettos.

Okay ^^ do you think there are any contraltos in K-Pop? It's kind of hard to hear a feminine low voice in K-pop.

There is 1 Contralto in SK and that's it.

Oh okay so Minah and Sojin are not as bad as I thought, they're pretty normal mediocre vocalists lol but they're not terrible... though. Girls' Day are okay in terms of overall vocalists as a group. Like They're not bottom 3 (2NE1, Kara and 4Minute) some C#5's and C5s with somewhat stable larynxes, not much strain, one bad Eb5 by Minah, their support is somewhat shallow but overall enough to handle a song like this.. not that it was challenging, no resonance at all however. The first video with Sojin was pitchy tho lol oh and lemme just say some weaknesses like breathy, though they meant it, overall the way the sing isn't very good cord connection wise, it's too soft and not sitting on the notes...they're not completely stable in terms of pitch and control lol not overall fine and their projection isnt very impressive

GsD songs are set really high for the girls tbh. They can't even sing a D5 decently, Minah has belt has a handful of F5s in their songs (almost all their songs have F5s). And in Female Pres they sing a lot of Eb5s, all bad though.

No. If talking abt commercial one, her osts usually flops. So she'll flop.

OSTs aren't really promoted though, if SM promotes her well, and give her a mid-tempo pop song that doesn't go above C#5 she might do well . Not to mention she'll have the Girls' Generation tag and such. People check out Taeng's OST more because 1.She is more popular than Jessica 2.SM promotes her as Vocalist Supreme 3.Her dramas have more of a name I think

Taeyeon OSTs are not really promoted. Like And One was not promoted at all. And the 'it's because of drama' thing isn't a base because the Yesung and Boa (spica) osts frm the same drama flopped. None of the osts by SNSD members except for Taeyeon has done well on charts until now. Which brings me to my conclusion that a Sica solo will flop. Physically might do well, digitally will be a dud. Most idol osts don't do well btw

Aly, SNSD tag is not enough to get a hit FYI The drama tag isn't either. Remember And One? It became a hit without ANY promotion i.e  live and not because of the drama, BoA (Spica) and Yesung OSTs from the same drama were flops  btw What matters is the one who's singing it. Idols' OSTs usually flops. Taeyeon is one of the fewer with legit OST hits because SK es h public adorer. Can't say the same for Sica, that's why I'm saying her solo is bound to flop unless a miracle makes it a hit. Anyway enough off topic. Let's continue in PM  if  you want.

Yes Sica's voice has the roasted bitter quality to it. But is also saccharine. I find Minkyung's voice curdled not creamy. Seo's the same.
