Oh and if you don't mind, can you rank each vocalist? Thanks :)

I don't know where they rank but I know KRY is much better vocally than 2AM

well from F2-E4 im park hyoshin/key/Junsu, but from that I turn into ryeowook. WTF?

WTH would I be, is it because my voice is really underdeveloped (I have no vocal training), would I be sure if I got one?

Is baritenor used when noobie vocal trainees/newly cracked voices are confused with either being baritenor or tenor?

We would need to hear your voice to type you, but even still, if you have airiness, nasality etc. things that affect your tone production it would be more of an educated guess more so than an actual definite answer. Key and Junsu are both Tenors though.

Hi everyone! I've finally crossed from the AKP forums and I'm glad that you guys have this vocals thread up and running on here :). Always love all the discussions and sharing of good vocal videos! I have a question, when idols are selected to star in musicals, do they usually have okay-good vocals? And do their vocals improve after doing musicals? Thank you :)

Well, Sunny,Key, and Jessica were all casted in musicals and they all have mediocre vocals. Only Good idol with Good Vocals, that I know of, that was casted in a musical is KyuHyun.

Well from 0:36 onwards she does a few low notes, with the lowest at F3. I guess if she gets airy around that zone, she's struggling?

I've heard E3 somewhere else before, maybe I'll try finding it.

Yeah...she isn't very trained..her lower range shouldn't be that breathy and weak sounding...

Yeah I thought so, like I read news that some FT Island members other than Hong Ki were featuring in musicals, so I guess that they don't have to be that good to star in them. Not everyone is as good as Kyuhyun unfortunately, if only more idols are at his level then the Kpop standard would be much higher :)

Well, they don't really have to be his level, I believe they should at least be more OKAY/Decent ones. There really is no excuse for the amount of mediocre vocalist there are in KPOP. To tell you the truth, I believe all Main Vocalist in KPOP should be at least Jessica level if not higher, even though she is Mediocre she is still better than like Half the vocalist in KPOP, but so many Main Vocalist are less than her

Yeah that's true. I know, Jess really is better than a lot of main vocalists. If the members in SNSD were given the chance to have a solo album, who would be the first? Taeyeon and Jessica have a lot of nice OST's...

Well, I don't think SM would base it off who has the best vocals...

Oh well, its the companies' job to follow popular beliefs. How is Henry's vocals? I like his song, and it is cool how he got Kyu and Taemin to feature in it :)

Oh he's pretty mediocre.

Henry seems pretty weak

I don't understand why Kyu was even featured in Trap.... He really didn't do/add much to the song

Because they could.

I asked this before but people said you needed to hear my voice to tell me what voice type and timbre I am --- in choirs I was constantly getting shuttled between alto and soprano sections so I don't really know --- I can't sing most songs that are typed as soprano (can't reach a lot of the higher notes).

So here's a sample if you don't mind and have the time, mr and ms regulars of this thread.

Not a trained singer (had a couple basic lessons from my mom and sang in church choirs) so please excuse strain, intonation issues, bad vibrato etc.   :._.:

Beginning section is singing at the top of my range and later section is the lowest comfortable that I can reach (g3 I think is the low note) (~2 mins)

I think you are a Soprano dear. IF you were a Contralto you would be more Cher weight, and would be androgynous and if you were a Mezzo you'd be more Beyonce. But I can't be 100% sure because you didn't go very high, you can't base a voice type 100% of chest voice, you need mixing/belts as well.

Koda Kumi's chest voice is more Mezzo like, but her mixing screams Soprano.

Thank you!  Re; bolded part, this is going to sound really stupid but... for some reason I thought your voice type was based on your chest voice range (isn't that the most comfortable area of range for a person? I think I totally had that + tessitura mixed up) and that anything higher was not really counted.

I can go higher but I have to switch where I feel my voice is coming from so it's nowhere near as comfortable/harder to control/airflow, and I have no idea if that is mixing or belting or falsetto tbqh.

But anyway thanks again ^^

Not your chest range, because everyone chest range stops at F#4. It is based on Chest Voice and Belting. Let's use Beyonce as an example, Beyonce voice is very womanly and weighty, that of a  lyric mezzo, her C5s are weighty and not really bright like Sopranos, that is what makes her a Lyric Mezzo. Now lets use SoHyang, her chest voice is very womanly, creamy, and a tad weighty, but it still pretty bright, her C5s are pretty bright and youthful which makes her a Soprano. What makes SoHyang a Spinto Soprano is her metallic and very weighty belts above Eb5. So as you can see belting is a very crucial part in typing someones voice, especially pop vocalist.

also since Jessica / seohyun are mediocre vocalist and kyuhyun is the best tenor in SM, who had better C5's just a quick question, why is Jessica the most praised mediocre vocalist in this thread, don't people like you have no time for mediocre vocalist? Or is it in reality that she's just base okay/okayish-mediocre

Because we are bias~ We like Jessica that's why lol. She is one of the mediocre vocalist that is getting closer to OK though...

is it just me or the level of nasality in SNSD's perfs is getting higher and higher?

now it's like everyone sounds so nasal except for Taeyeon but even her sounds nasal at times

i noticed it first here

Actually no. Jessica and SeoHyun are actual getting less nasal. Sunny's nasality is about the same. Only Tiffany's nasality has gotten worse.

The dancers have also went up in terms of vocals.

I've actually noticed this too. For all these years, I finally realized that Tiffany is actually getting nasally. Jessica and seohyun are still nasal, but not as nasal in the past.

also, from reading vocal reviews and analysis.

I've noticed parts that assess a note, like eg, this artist has pulled a few good C5, and some okay D5.

what makes an executed note:

good

decent

okay

mediocre

bad

Tiffany has ALWAYS been nasal, it was just masked by her tone.

Amazing-Resonated

Good-Open Throat/Very Well Supported

Decent- Nicely Support

OK- OK Support, placement could be better; lacking

Mediocre-Tense, not good support, placement is off

Bad-Very tense,Bad Support,Bad Placement

okay thanks.

Hmm so is tiffany getting worse nowadays?

Yes. SooYoung has had moments where she has done better than Tiffany. Tiffany is now more or less on the level of Sunny, only reason why she might be more is because Tiffany has better stability, but that might have changed as of recently.
