What is the purpose of resonating? Does it have any use?

to sing with minimum effort. And as Akisame meant, it's a proper form of projection. Some singers can't even project properly and be heard over an audience even with a microphone, which is ridiculous (some even have to use audio amplifier lol). In that case, resonance is a great help for them.

@Ahmin. Tonality is the desired tone. Straining is an undesirable tone. So no, IDK what you mean.

guys

Gdi I wanted to know the answer to Cyndi lauper

Dramatic mezzo or soprano (she has ease in the upper register, so she might be a soprano) I'm not sure, let me ask Josias. Cyndi Lauper is a full lyric.

Question, where are you getting your definition for tonality? Are you using it interchangably with the term timbre? Maybe that's why there's confusion. Tonality is also used to say you're within the tonality of the piece which would mean he's on key.

I'm aware there are different meanings of "tonality". By tonality, I meant good, ideal or desirable tone production that is full, supported and resonant. Ahmin should be aware of that and not be confused since we use this term for this meaning a lot in this thread.

I'm sorry, Drew. Am I employed by you? Are you paying me for this? Is this my job? I have a life too, sometimes I'm too busy and I miss out on a few questions but I try and answer most. So uhm excuse you, yes. It better be a joke.

So...as I said on Twitter, I was merely messing around with you because of your annoying attitude in your previous post (I was going to say it was a joke, but nooo you had to give me that attitude). Anything I say about you outside of PM is generally not to be taken too seriously. End of.

Adele has not shown things like dynamics, phrasing, sense of rhythm, improvisation (I'm not sure about this), etc, which is probably why people here say she has no musicality. I wouldn't say Adele's a bad singer because at least, she has her own style, unlike a certain basic singer.

How did these flawless singers do?

Except for the horrible pronunciation

Except for the low notes, everything else was fine.

What do you guys think of Jessica Simpson? Is she above average?

I did notice she has a habit of having her tongue slid back and raising her larnyx. But I think she's got some resonant or moments as well.

No...she has a horrible technique.

If you know the proper technique, why can you only hit some notes correctly? Shouldn't you know how to hit them all? Why are top vocalists still straining or being tense on certain notes.

Also, how good were the whistles at 3:30?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFK-Q45zL_o

Some vocalists (the top ones worldwide such as Beyonce, Mariah, Whitney) can strain or tense some notes for stylistic purpose. Also, just because they have proper technique doesn't mean they don't have flaws and limit in their technique. Some vocalists (such as the top vocalists in Kpop) might not be good enough to execute very complex vocal lines (due to their breath control), hence the tension at certain notes. Their voice might not be well-trained past a certain point in their range, which explains why they can go tense at certain notes. Sometimes, it has to do with habit or consistency issues. They might not be consistent at a certain part of their range or singing in a certain part of their voice might not be habitual for them, so they might make mistakes in that area. Other vocalists might have not trained a certain part of their voice as well, as opposed to other parts of their voice, so when they go outside their comfort zone, they might tense up their voice. It can also be due to a change of style and lack of adaptation to the style.

Not whistles. they're actually head voice notes. Good and opened.

How are Natalia Imbruglia and The Offspring vocally?

Inspired by the video Kongwee posted

still impressed :stare:

Natalia isn't a vocalist since she doesn't do vocally challenging stuff based on that video, but I'd say she's average. There weren't any technical faults from her in that video, though.

I'm not sure about Offspring because IDK how to properly judge rock singers, but technically, they were okay, except for some raspy parts (for stylistic purpose).

can you rank crayon pop for me ... these are live performance

Choa > Soyul > Way > the rest

Quick questions

How is K.Will? I know you guys once said that he was a future project on Wordpress.

How can you tell is something is poorly supported other than intonation?

Good vocalist. There will be lack of fullness, airy-ness and vibrato issues.

Mariah apparently got nodules from smoking and according to her, smoking was the reason why she has a lower register. I agree, nodules might be the reason why she has a whistle register. The nodules issue poses a lose-lose situation for her: she can't sing without them (since she's learned to sing through them from the beginning of her career and she might lose her highest register if she removes them ), but she'll damage her voice in the long-run with them.

I'm pretty skeptical of the smoking argument. Smoking increases the weight of the vocal cords due to swelling which creates a darker tone which makes it seem like you can sing lower when it really does nothing to your actual range. She probably could sing just as low if not lower if she hadn't been a smoker. This is just my opinion, but I don't think that high register is worth screwing up her voice forever. She absolutely could sing without them. At worst she'd loose 4 of her highest notes and she could learn how to hit very high notes in her head voice. It probably would be easier for her to sing without the nodules and it shouldn't be hard for her to learn new technique. But at this point the damage is done and she can't go back.

You might be right about the smoking argument. This is what she said, though:

Talk about a smokin' voice
Mariah Carey claims she got her incredible singing range from smoking.

The singer, who reportedly has a five-octave voice — some write-ups put it as high as seven —says that one of the reasons is because she smoked when she was younger.

“It’s true. The two lowest octaves are probably there because of the smoking,†a champagne-sipping Carey told Swedish mag Groove, according to a translation. “But of course it’s not good to smoke. I always had a cold and constant throatache.†So she quit, she said. “One day I promised God that if he would give me my voice back I would never smoke again. I got three octaves back after quitting.â€

But Carey was drinking alcohol, pointed out the interviewer. “Doesn’t alcohol dry out your vocal cords?†she was asked. “Well, what dries the cords out isn’t the … do you sing? I have a feeling that you are a singer.†The interviewer said no. “Okay,†replied Carey. “Let’s stop the tape and rewind.â€
