Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

The overall connection is much better than earlier this year but the Eb5 and D5 sound still throaty despite the throatiness.

Look like she had a difficult year last year because her cat died during Shake It aka when she her vocals started getting worse, so I think she is finally getting back to taking care of her voice. Before that TMB performance I don't even remember the last time she hit that note live.

Lip synching to a track to a period when she used to have resonance on D5 wouldn't tell us anything about her current vocal ability.

that's not her 2013 voice lmao
They did a new one this year just for that app as you can hear by how raspy Soyou voice is.

You should have asked something.

My timestamps are for this video

1:31 resonant Bb4?
2:18 C5 tension? :rlytearpls:
The difference in 3:06-3:11 :rlytearpls:

That airy falsetto is so itchy :rlytearpls:

I feel like this guest ate Hyorin's alive, and she can use headvoice :rlytearpls:

Oh my Hyorin. :rlytearpls:

Im pretty sure Hyorin hit a resonant D5. She did really well. She is clearly getting her voice back.
Hyo airy falsetto isn't new. So nothing unusal abt that.

Is she the guest or what?

every week there is 3/4 new idols/artist. And they fight for the #1 spot. Hyorin ended at #2.

3:07....that was such a mess lool

So I actually watched the whole thing and in this range Hyorin did really well she was very open and had some really nice resonant moments, so really even with this new found rating she's still at like the top of the pack. 1;31 Yes, that Bb4 was resonant good job~ 2:18 was actually a B4 I believe and there wasn't tension why did you think that?

Do you have a time stamp?

3:30

Yeah, that's what I keep singing and I don't see myself singing a 3rd off. At least I would hope I'm not that flat lol.

So what was the highest note she hit? Beside the flop falsetto Edited by HotTea

I've been spamming Ahmin with questions on the blog lately, so I'll try to summarize what he's been telling me on the blog. Considering how she was struggling with B4s/C5s occasionally late 2015/early 2016, and now she's doing well up to C#5 and recently hit better D5s at a concert, I think she's going back on track. I just think that stress combined with bad habits picked up from rapping/Unpretty Rapstar resulted in some decline late last year, but I think she got adequate rest, and she's taking control over her instrument as well. Her voice sounded so throaty/chesty/shouty earlier this year (King of Mask Singer, Adele cover, solo event in like Feb., etc.), and she had great trouble hitting D5s and even singing Eb5s/E5s (from multiple concerts/events singing Ma Boy/TMB). Now, she's been mixing better, and there is a lot more brightness in her mix compared to earlier, so thankfully I don't think she's on track to permanently damaging her voice as of now. However, I do think that getting rest was the primary reason why she's been sounding better recently compared to earlier this year, and tbh, I'm not sure if it's necessarily progress since her Eb5-F5 range is still very lackluster, but maybe Ahmin can answer that more effectively. Sorry that my reply is extra af, and I'm not sure if I relayed all the information 100% accurately that Ahmin gave to me haha...

The reason she got bad is because her cat died back in 2015, he was really sick and she didn't know what to do. She was having a mental breakdown. Her UPRS song My Love was abt her cat. She recently talked abt all this.

Okay, I'm going to be honest..I really don't believe her cat dying is the cause of her recent vocal decline. Correlation does not mean causation that's not how voice the works. I understand if she would be under some stress because of that, but I really doubt it would cause her to absolutely not support her voice after a certain point and forget how to mix properly.

You don't know Hyorin and how much she loves animal. She loves animals as much she loves her own mother. As I said before, she was having a mental breakdown. I'm not saying she forgot how to sing and etc. I'm just saying her cat dead did damage on her life what lead to bad choices.

he's showing how to sing with "distortion", which is a technique used in harsher styles of rock/metal. He's singing a grunge song called "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains, so it is stylistically appropriate. Not all harsh sounds are throaty or unhealthy, though a lot can be, especially when done incorrectly. Correct growling is also done with the vestibular folds aka false vocal folds, which are not part of your actual vocal folds used for normal phonation, so singers like Beyonce are never damaging their voices when growling, contrary to popular belief. Even deathgrowling is not actually unhealthy when it is done right, though people listening to it will just assume it is because it sounds very harsh.

Hi guys! I've been a lurker here for quite some time and finally thought to join the community. Call me Natsu and I hope to have a wonderful time with you guys! :D

I wanted to bring to attention Hyolyn (Hyorin) as her vocals seem damaged, non-resonant, and placed incorrectly. Usually, Hyolyn has a very feminine, bright tone at the top and takes on a more husky quality at the middle. Her lows are non-existent but that's nothing too worrying considering her songs and repertoire. However, recently, beginning in the middle of 2015, Hyolyn's voice has been regressing and it is worrying. Ever since her debut era, Hyolyn's one of the few who has improved vastly and consistently, even showing signs of support up to an E5 and F5 at times. Her debut album had great inflections, runs, and intricate harmonies with sporadic riffing here and there, giving it a very laidback and often American RnB vibe. I thought her growth would continue, but recently, her technique has become harsher, her voice breaks much faster, her breath and overall support has dwindled, and her instrument sounds unhealthy. I understand she may be pushing because her voice is giving up much quicker which can only be ascribed to overwork, bad technique, and pulling/pushing. A fellow Lyrical Soprano: Demi went through the same phase where she pushed, pulled, her voice cracked and tumbled, and combatted a host of other vocal atrocities. However, it is quite puzzling for this to happen to Hyolyn who has only been improving her instrument, can utilize her falsetto and head voice very well, and can perform intricate runs. Another thing: runs. They've become sloppy and uncontrolled as well as her head voice which is now airy, weak, and lifeless. The thing is, even if your voice is damaged or unhealthy, it shouldn't impact your abiliy to perform runs to such a degree where you mush 7 notes into 2 or 3. Hopefully she rests and ses a doctor because her voice seems damaged and her pushing will only lead to more vocal hazards. Maybe she had a vocal hemorrhage and wasn't aware? Who knows, but hopefully she comes back with full force!

What are your thoughts on Hyolyn?

EDIT: Support actually only goes up to an Eb5 and most of the time solid up to D5. And she's not a Lyrical Soprano, her voice is too light and not that voluminous so more like a Light Soprano.

This was hilarious.

not everyone is going to watch 18 minutes just to check if the Eb5s and E5s were good, you're welcome [2]

I'm not forcing anyone to watch it :imstupid:

"The 17:48 E5 was throaty, the 7:21 Eb5 had signs of throatiness but the D5 was actually pretty nice. It may have been lip synched but it was pretty nice." Because someone on the blog actually put time stamps for me to watch so I'd know what Eb5 and E5 to listen to. I'm positive about her D5's, I'm really hoping for them to come back to her.

I'm not feeling her C5's...nor above that.

It wasn't lip sync lol

Yes.
It's like having a high level and good gear. It's a good first step, but if your skills are poor or unbalanced you might still struggle in more challenging areas. You have to combine a good base with good specific skills, consistency and the ability to use your character in the right way.

is it jsut me or is even soyou's speaking voice super throaty/scratchy? listen here at 2:49 She's been throatier than usual in the past months maybe she's sick or something?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U50pzPYuYA

She is allergic to cat but she has one.

It's weird but is it coincidental that as hyorin regressed it seemed like sistar's career was like that? Not to shade anyone, but it seems like hyorin's voice condition is like sistar's performance in the long run. Her vocal peak is when the time sistar really shined, idk.

With that said, I'd like for hyorin to improve even more and maybe even bump herself up to good or good to great because I love sistar's songs and I hope they last even longer in the industry!

SISTAR peak was in 2012, Hyorin peak was in 2014.

How did Hyorin's voice regress in 2015-2016 if she was a really strong vocalist in 2013-14? What could have happened? I mean she was rated a good vocalist so she should've been at the point where her technique was solid. D':

She went through a mental breakdown when her cat died.
