Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

Hi! My friend is a serious Christina Aguilera fan and insists that this is one of her best performances ever

https://youtu.be/eg3wyv5iflk?t=2m

My ears say this isn't accurate but I'm not a professional of vocal technique and apparently experts claim that she showcased her vocal best here  :._.:. Is she really the voice of our generation or is she the noise because experts can't seem to agree???

The comment about Ailee being merely above average by western standards... lol What's that average huh? lol

This was just a lot of strain, she is singing all in her throat. Christina Aguilera has a gorgeous instrument, a beautiful voice but she doesn't use the potential of her voice well whatsoever. She has subpar technique, barely uses breath support and basically sings with her larynx going up and down to change her sound, with a lot of chest being pushed for her to sound like she has a much bigger voice than her natural instrument. She manipulates the sound of her voice with too much pushing, tension, throatiness and thus causes a lot of vocal strain and damage to her vocal cords. That specific part you put is a great example of her straining her falsetto to the point where it sounds like a shriek, a very shrill thin sound.

Basically all MR removed videos prove is that someone is singing live, as if singing live meant someone is good. A lot of people try to say "so and so lip synchs" well, okay? Beyonce lip synched the National Anthem, that doesn't make her any less of a great example of good technique in a vocalist. MR Removed distorts the sound of the voice and only really breaks the whole mood of hearing someone's singing and how they're able to manipulate the sound of their voices, as well as the volume and air control with the dynamics of the music in itself. Instead all we hear is people singing while dancing and running out of breath, but hey I guess it's live right? Honestly, it's a very sad way of trying to demean someone or trying to make someone look good.

0:31 nice head voice transition, she started slightly nasal at first but it was all on purpose. 1:18 her F#3's sound great. 1:20 lots of vibrato there. 1:32 that's nice. 1:45 nice C#5. I feel like sometimes her mix gets a bit too light and she loses power and she rises in range, her resonance isn't as big but the support is there, for sure. 2:14 good transition into head voice, good placement and vowel shaping. 2:20 the run after this part was kind of a slide but the sustained note had good placement, it was nice. 2:39 Nice nice, the highest note in this was Eb5, the lowest was F#3. Good support throughout, the placement could've been fuller.

Thank you for clearing it up  :ahmagah:~ I really do think Christina has a pretty voice but there's something about the way she sings that doesn't sound right like straining or something  :._.:

Those "experts" that say she's good are dumbasses and/or getting paid to say that.

She looks and sounds like she's in pain is what I thought but people keep telling me that it's just her style (her style is to look and sound like she's in pain  :._.: ?).

You want a hot body? You better work Bitch. Lol but really you better work or choose a lower song lol no being a Baritone is fun! Try singing a John park song lol
NUESTs Baekho yes but ZEA? Idk probably not

Admin if I'm relatively untrained and can belt B4/C5(strained ofc) I'm probably a tenor??

If you're a male and you can mix a B4/C5 with no training, there's a pretty good chance you're a tenor yes.

Yes, I have boy parts  :derp:  Thank you  :ahmagah:  I know hearing a clip of me singing would probably be better than just going by what I think I'm doing but I only have my phone to record with  :._.:

LOOOOL DEAD

I've always wanted to be a part of a choir! And a kpop singing competition? I wish I had those where I live haha I would so sign up for that :x and that range is similar to mine! I started singing because of SNSD LOL I was around 13 or so when I became a fan, and now I'm 21.... oh how time flies. I also wanted to be an idol when I was younger too, so I auditioned for SM a few times, although the first few times didn't really count because I was super shy and my talents were underdeveloped. The last time I went was in 2013, and they let me sing the whole song that I prepared even though they usually cut people off after a few seconds. Unfortunately I never auditioned for dancing, which I think I may have had a better chance with since I'm a baritone and they're not really looking for that in a main vocalist. Now that I'm older I'm not sure what to do with my singing and dancing abilities XDD I would audition again just for fun, but they stopped coming to Toronto a few years ago, which is stupid because we gave them Henry and Wendy... like, they keep going to random ass places in the US like New York and I'm like have ya'll ever actually RECEIVED anybody from there??? Wendy is a talented vocalist and Henry is basically a violin and piano prodigy... anyways... T_T

I think I can produce G2s with a neutral larynx and on good days, F#2s, but I'm not entirely sure. We should collab sometime ^^ I don't know if you've seen me post in this thread before but I make covers and a lot of other guys in this thread make covers too. We actually had a group cover not too long ago :D it was a hot mess but it was fun lol

Ohhh? I'm pretty sure they haven't stopped coming since I've been auditioning for the SM global audition since 2013 in toronto  :derp: So sad they're not coming this year
i wish I was like you! My voice is so high and light, not powerful booming manly sounding   :._.:

Hi! Mamamoo just had their comeback and I was wondering how they did in this performance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF4xBPxVG4E

Here's the other song they performed where they don't move around as much:

in other news MAMAMOO slayed on IS2

Mamamoo  :ahmagah:  Would you say they have had improvement since last year or still about the same??

mezzo? her tone does remind me of Ali, but i think she sound lighter, oh she is Lee Yejun, the winner of the voice korea season 2. glad that she's at least above average

i have one more question, how is Hong Jimin? and is she a full lyric?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QxOs1uzV8A

her belt sound really powerful and resonant, she also hit some F3's and G3's (not sure how it is)

2:50 C5, 2:58 D5, 3:11 C5-D5, 3:40 D5-C5, 3:53 F#5, 4:15 Eb5 after that Bb4, 4:32 C#5, 4:41 C#5

She sounds like Lee Young Hyun to me  :ahmagah:

Random thought but got any examples of light-lyric sopranos who try really hard to sound like full-lyrics? Demi comes to mind

Shamelessly taking advantage of the opportunity to bring up Mamamoo. I thought Ailee was a full lyric or something not light lyric until I read her analysis actually  :derp:. Demi and Ailee sound similar to me except Ailee can actually support those notes.

Lmao the Mamamoo shade, they're my favs but where is the lie @ Solar Wow I actually thought Ailee was a full lyric until you just said this

No shade at all #HardcoreMoomoo #Stan #Hwasabi #Thighs

I also thought Ailee was a full lyric. What is life?.... :derp:

I didn't really understand it at first but I sort of get it after comparing Ailee and Eunji. I also thought Solar was a full lyric but then again I compared her with Eunji  :rlytearpls:

Every single bitch that sings with a depressed larynx. So Shakira, Charice (Not positive on her voice type, though), Bianca Ryan, and anyone else you can think of.

I thought Shakira and Charice were mezzos? With western artists, I think of Jennifer Hudson who's supposedly a dramatic soprano  :dave:

Ailee pushes, she creates that fake weight with her pushed resonance approach, and it sounds distorted as she goes high, it just isn't naturally weighty, whereas full lyrics like Eunji and Kim Yeonji have that weight all over their voice, not just in their mixed voice. Ailee's chest voice sounds quite of a light lyric soprano, her head voice likewise.

I think I can hear what you mean by pushed resonance because it's kind of like she uses a lot of air to sound like that while Eunji even when she's not using as much air still sounds that weighty as you put it (if I'm understanding what that means correctly).

I stumpled  upon this youtube video of kim yeonji singing Tears after watching the guy from uplotion perform it on masked singer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65qbUUSGgwY

At 1:10 I was like  :rlytearpls:  at the C5 at the end of the phrase. I see the word resonance used in this thread used a lot and it was like "I think I know what resonance sounds like now"

Kim Yeonji has massive resonance in the beginning of the fifth octave

like check her C#5s at 2:52 and 3:59, 3:59 IS SO BIG AZZDEFGFHGN,

another wow Eb5 at 4:57

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6viT2Cb72nA

I actually searched her name in this thread after I found the video and saw you post that video  :hurr: Wow I get this feeling like I'm swimming when she does the notes like that. Full lyrics are amazing  :ahmagah:

if you were a girl would you like to be a full lyric or a light lyric?

I think I'd be a ligh lyric

Why is Spinto not an option? Queen Whitney please

Just curious why pick Light Lyric? I think for me I just like the mature, womanly tone of Full Lyrics so do you like the more girly tone of lights?
Also posting receipts of why Sohyang should be a disney princess. Lady putting average sopranos to shame by making that Bb4 @ 2:52 sound like a low note

@AhMin, I noticed that Chen's analysis got taken down from the website. Does this mean he's being reviewed? I'm curious since he's always been my fave in exo :ahmagah:  Is he being upgraded  :ahmagah:  Or will another one of my faves be downgraded  :._.:

Being in the vocal thread has taught me that just because I think that someone sounds good doesn't mean that the technique is good. Before entering the thread I never thought about vocals that much to see who was straining or who was not using the right breath support. It's to the point now that whenever so and so says a person is such a great singer or such a awesome talent, I think to myself "maybe in sound but what about technique?"  Of course I don't say that outloud (I'm not trying to start any riots or seem pretentious). It can be disappointing to know that someone you like is weak and lacks control when before you was so hype because you thought they was about that vocal life. The craziest thing to me is how "experts" say so and so is such a great singer but when you hear about their technique it makes you wonder if the experts are talking about how they sound vs what they can actually do.

Whenever I hear someone say that Changmin screams, the first thing that comes to my mind is "why?" Why does he scream and won't that hurt his voice and why hasn't it already hurt his voice? It's also been said that Christina Aguilera hollers ( (sings tts): HOLLER HOLLER HOLLER (sorry I couldn't resist) ) I've even realized that some of the old school's legend technique isn't what people hype them up to be. It's sad in a way because reality hit me but then again this is something that I wanted to learn about and I'm learning. Not only by just being in this thread but by hearing other opinions and lessons outside of here.

I agree with everything! Except which old school legends are you thinking of because the ones that come to my mind are like Mariah / Whitney, or even older like Pati Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland  :derp:

Random question, but what do you guys think is your biggest vocal weakness? For me I'm a complete vocal mess (maybe I should study rapping lol) but nasality is my #1 problem. WBU?

I think my biggest weakness is I try to match the tone and style of the person who sang the song originally. Like, when I sing Frank Sinatra I think I either lower my larynx or pull chest or something to sound like a baritone, or like when I sing a song by an unskilled singer like Justin Bieber I try to match his sound and exactly where he strains even tho I can do another song with the same notes and not strain as badly  :derp:

So the other vocalist from History was shown to me. Any opinions on his voice type?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C7MGqTqYas&feature=youtu.be

Idk why but I thought of that dude from Guckkasten when I heard his singing  :derp:  Tenor like 80% of the boys in kpop??

An Open throat is achieved by having an opened position for your mouth, so allowing your mouth to open and your jaw to drop, instead of keeping a wide smile-like position that makes you too stretched and tight, a long face will help. Lifting the soft palate, keeping the tongue forward, relaxing the swallowing muscles all help. If you take in a breath through your mouth as your start singing, a quiet relaxed breath with your jaw dropped, that should be the kind of throat shape you should aim for when you sing. So you take in a breath and keep the same exactly the same as you exhale air into your vocal cords to create sound.

When I heard him talk I was like BARITONE! Then he started singing and was singing constantly around G#4 with a throaty somewhat thick voice but light approach and it confused me. I wanna say he's a baritone myself, but I'm not entirely sure.

:ahmagah:  Saving for my own usage later~

Isn't G#4 kind of like really high for a Baritone to mix if they're unskilled  :derp: Especially with the kind of approach he's doing? I'm thinking Baritones would be shouty trying to mix that high without the skill for it?? Idk what I'm talking about tho, so  :derp:

Not really, I mean many really badly trained tenors can mix all the way up to D5 many times even if they can't even support G4. Jung Yonghwa can mix G5, so if your mixing technique is fine, with no support you can still strain your way through the rest of your range. Same for Ariana Grande, mixes B5, can't support C5. If you use a lighter airier approach, it's easier to sing that high.

I'm still not sure, he's making me confused. His technique isn't very good either way but yknow.

Ooo I see. I can totally understand since I think I can really headily mix into the fifth octave and I'm a boy, so  :derp:  Thank you for the clarification! Maybe he is a baritone?? but i guess without more training we can't really be sure :dave:

:horror:

Same

well obviously not exactly the same lol. Basically im curious if she has actually lost her technique or if her instrument is just damaged

Tbh i don't know which one I'd rather it be because they're both bad  :._.: I knew I should've picked Ailee in the rivalry  :._.:. This is why Queen Bey and Goddess Sohyang are my only real stans because I have faith the only thing that'll get them is old age and that's totally natural.

Tbh ignoring her technique she has had some really pretty songs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAfyFTzZDMM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4q05resEvc

Was she better in her younger years despite the consistently improper technique, but over the years her vocal condition deteriorated because of the way she sang?

im having my own little sort of anniversary right now for some reason,.. so..

like the past 2 years around this time im going to ask again how it did in this,.. cover of The Letter

https://soundcloud.com/jeeremij/davichi-the-letter-cover

I think it sounds better then it used to, more open or something

it also didnt feel tiring like it used to, which is good but I think it was really quiet in the beginning but that was better at the second not loud singing part,..
last year:

https://soundcloud.com/jeeremij/dtl

from 2014, where I basically had been singing in mixed voice for only 5 months,.. so I sucked

https://soundcloud.com/jeeremij/the-letter
opinions?

Baritone  :megusta:

You sound hot tbh

Hey! I think you got better over the two years? Like, more stable / overall less pitchy and better supported... or is the placement better... Well, it sounds better  :meow:

I just realized that there are times when the mamamoo members kind of remind me of christina aguilera  :._.:

At the beginning

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4TaXQZisdk

Like I think I can hear what too chesty and pushed resonance sound like now? As long as there's support their approach is okay, right? But it may impact their overall vocal health and longevity if they stick to the chesty / pushed side of mixing?
