Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

Hey guys! Just found this thread; it's interesting to me since I'm a singer myself:) But only classically...I have no chest voice TT.TT
Anyway, was wondering what you think of Youngji? She seems weak sometimes, but then she belts pretty well so idk. Here she is live:

Here it seems the nerves got to her, as well as the dancing:

I love the higher notes, soft and loud. The range seems comfortable for her :) What do you think?

Boo you are a soprano. What is a low note? You dont need to know about one. Just keep tone down to A below middle C and youre good.

haha thanks XD my friend and I actually sing together and it works..she sounds like Rihanna, I sound like some little Celtic maiden, it's good!

What do you guys think of Solji? I think she was EXID's vocal coach before joining them as a member. I think her voice is very emotional, and she does well hitting those high notes  :lub:

Little itty bitty clip of Hani singing live, with good audio. I like the tone of her voice, and her English is damn good. Seems like her range might be more alto/mezzo??

Kind of OT, idk, but since there are some singers I wanna ask - does anyone else have issues with chest voice singing?? I exclusively sing in my head voice ( high soprano represent lol) and so I've always stuck to classical songs because I can get loud with that and it's easier for me. But I wanna sing more modern songs too :'(

Every time I try my chest voice, it starts hurting after some time and my range is horrible ( I can't mix well yet obviously)

Am I just breathing wrong or not using the right technique? Haven't figured out belting either...

I have that same issue, too. I think it's because I never got a chance to develop my chest voice that much compared to my head voice, so whenever I try singing in chest voice, it sounds as if I'm shouting. It's much easier for me to sing, for example, Time to Say Goodbye/Con Te Partiro than something like Jimin's Hopeless Love

Ugh it's the worst! People think classical is way harder, and I disagree so much (well, as long as it's in my range). My tone is just bad when I try chest voice..and it sounds scratchy and unused - which it is! So much more effort...I guess it just has to do with what you've grown up hearing and singing. I was brought up on classical.

At least I can sing Schubert's Ave Maria, and my power ballads aren't by Beyonce but Bach..lol

No it's not bad if you do it for a little bit to warm up your voice

Actually I doubt it has something to do with wrong breathing or bad technique, it's just a register you haven't fully developed. Quite the opposite from most people who speak and sing in their chest, you have learned to develop your head voice more and you haven't used your chest, as you need is patience and to slowly go step by step to develop your chest voice, without trying to hurt yourself and just trying to use it more often first.

That does make sense; songs that I know really well and have 'practiced' over time are much easier for me to sing, because I figured out how to manipulate my voice so it sounds good. "Stay" by Rihanna is a good example:)

Hello! I am trying to find info on IOI vocal analysis, and tried using the search function but all I got was random stuff mostly about Twice...? So sorry if this is redundant. Anyway, Sejeong, one of the main vocals, recently had a comeback and I usually love her voice but I find her falsetto a bit untrained and it sounds like it's simply too high for her, at least in that register:

Yeonjung is simply always clean and precise imo, she's very reliable. She has good control. Here is their latest live (I think) performance together:

Here is a performance by Somi and Wooshin that I'm pretty sure is live. Somi usually belts and doesn't use a softer voice much, but some songs have her forced her to so she's developing more confidence in that register.

Here are some live performances, in the spoiler, of the rest of IOI

Stronger?? Uh.. Not really lol. But it's not any worse. Hwasa's barely passable too, it's just throat pushing with loads of tongue tension, I haven't heard her successfully sustaining C5s lol (Kei's best moments are better than what Hwasa can do by comparison). Jea too, she's tight, nasal and generally weaker support around that area for AAs. At the very least, Wheein is relatively clean and light enough to go through C5s without too much tension, just a less grounded sound.

She's not consistent with the C3s. The ones that are supported are very good indeed yes lmao but she's generally inconsistent below F3, even more so below Eb3. I'd still personally give her E3/Eb3 for supported range.

I've noticed that certain singers with developed lower ranges can have a more unfocused sound and less volume in the lower extents of their registers if they are not putting in the effort needed. The same case goes for Tori Kelly who also has some unimpressive moments below F3 because she didn't focus enough there. It's somewhat of a flaw since truly established coordination down there should have a presence even if they're not 'trying' (Uji to some extent usually keeps the connection till E3s even if she's not going full out) but singers like Tori Kelly and Beyonce have moments where when they do put in the effort and focus, it's quite good.

All things considered Beyonce does have a great lower range for a soprano. Not C3s, but more like E3/Eb3ish with some extra gems below that. She also doesn't have the best volume down there too but still, I'd say it's better than Mariah's or Lena etc.

Hi I never post in this thread despite singing all my life lol anyway, Beyonce really has such a solid range. She can definitely go lower than most sopranos, though, so I always thought of her as mezzo? True first sopranos simply can't go very low, at least in my experience. Even if not super supported, Beyonce can reach those notes to an extent.

Maybe her vocal color just throws me off, though.
