Official Vocals thread (READ OP FIRST)

Actually not slim. Pitch has some things to do with support, Josias is right. The only way you can go sharp is by excess of air pressure against the vocal cords, causing the pitch they're producing to go sharp, if it's not too much though, you can still retain a resonant sound... same for going flat, you can still be resonant even if you're flat, flat isn't always a support thing, it can also be muscle memory. Your vocal cords are used to hitting the note under pitch so even if it's comfortable for you, if you're not sensitive to it, you'll always hit it under pitch even if it's free and relaxed, unless you think about it and raise the pitch to be more centered.

But still the pitch correcting mics thing is bs. lol

as far as I remember EXO goes smth like D.O. > Chen > Lay(?) > Baekhyun > Luhan or smth like that, in that scale, onew would be like around the Chen/Lay area, whereas Jonghyun and Taemin would be above D.O.

I think you're talking about Suho there? (Even though I'd switch Baekhyun and Suho around then, but I don't know shit about vocals, things either sound pleasant to my ears or they don't, I dunno about technicalities, so...)

Cause Lay is like the dancer of EXO M, and if you were putting Onew on par with him vocally then that'd be really strange. xD

Anyways, this thread is kind of interesting, keep up the good work.

Lay is actually better than Chen from what I've heard because he produces a non-nasalized tone often, and keeps quitestable larynx while belting 4th octave notes and has quite decent support. Can't say the same for Chen.

This is a good performance.

Well that sounded pleasant to my ears. :) (Is it bad that the MC holding a rubics cube UNDER HIS ARMS kinda distracted me tho?  )

Apart form him being non-nasalized (I can hear that) and my general knowledge of what the 4th octave is (since I play an instrument), I have no idea what you're talking about so I'm just gonna have to trust you here.  I only ever judge singers by whether or not I like to listen to them singing or not, I don't pay much attention to techniques and stuff cause I simply have no idea about these things. I have no idea about EXO either, I just know D.O./Chen/Baekhyun/Suho are considered the best singers based on their position in the group, so I was kind of relying on SM's judgement to be accurate? I listen to EXO sometimes but I have no idea who sings which part so I don't know who's REALLY my most fave singer in that group and who isn't.

What about Suho then actually? Kind of sad that the main dancer of M is better than him considering he trained for what, 7 years?

Same could be said for Onew with Taemin being the main dancer and all, but I personally prefer Onew's voice over Jonghyun's and Taemin's (though these two I love as well), and I have not much knowledge when it comes to actual vocal techniques so... I guess the uniqueness of his voice kind of saves him. Cause many prefer him for his voice even though they know Jonghyun actually is the better vocalist (I don't think many people know Taemin is when it comes to technique, but I guess he is. Doubt Onew is butthurt over that though cause he personally taught Taemin a lot of stuff).

yeah LOL I meant Lay cuz of what zhx said... idunno much bout exo-m myself, Ik EXO-K so...

Oh okay then. :) Was not sure if you even were sure if that was his name since you added a question mark so I thought you might mean Suho. ;)

SM's positioning is usually accurate... or somewhat. As for Onew, I love his voice the most too, but am also aware that technically he's average, nothing exceptional.. he isn't too consistent either.. but I still prefer his voice

Hence, that's why his voice saves him. Most Kpop-Fans have no idea about vocal techniques so they wouldn't really care about that. Though I guess being average technically is still better than being total crap (I bet there are a lot of these people in Kpop, right?...I don't know but I kind of have this feeling that there are...), so yay for my bias.

SM's positioning is accurate when it comes to vocals I guess...rappers on the other hand...yeah let's not talk about this, sometimes I question if SM even HAS rapping teachers.

Often the positions are off in Kpop. So do not believe one is the best in the group because he/she is a main vocalist xD

I usually don't but with groups I don't know I have no other choice but to take their positions as a reference. xDD But yeah you're right probably.

Whilst I'm here, I'm actually pretty sure someone asked that question already cause I can't imagine it not being asked, but how would you guys rank SNSD?...Cause you know, there's always heated discussions about this amongst SONEs. xD

Most Kpop fans thinks going higher equals better vocalists. This is a very common misconception in music in general lol Like there's a whole working of vocals. Singing isn't just about hitting notes xD This is what annoys me about music listener in general. lol

Taeyeon>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sica>Seo>>>>>>>>>>Fany>Sunny. hehe xD

If singing was just about hitting notes then I would declare Kyuhyun the best male singer in Kpop. Well he is the best vocalist probably,I know many people with actual knowledge about vocals think so, but for me he lacks emotion. Like. So much. He can sing ballads all amazingly all he wants I'm never touched :/ Which is why in SJ I still prefer Yesung over him. (Then again, unlike vocal techniques, delivery and reception of emotions is a question of personal preference, just like voices. But I've honestly never met a person that said Kyuhyun's singing MOVES them.)

LOL I agree on Taeyeon (but who doesn't) but then the line gets all blurry for me when it comes to Sica/Seo/Fany...and I would place Sunny lower. But then again I'm only judging based on preference xDD

I guess the others aren't even worth mentioning then? XD

Most people thinks so *stares at SK audience* LOL

Hehe Kyuhyun is the best male in Kpop lol I do not like his voice myself xD LOL And I also prefer Yesung's voice over Kyuhyun's. LOL But yeah Kyu's vocals>>>>>>Every male in Kpop.

Sica and Seo are miles ahead of Fany lol Fany and Sunny are kinda equaled except that Fany has more stability.

Haha Soo>Yul>Hyo>Yoona LOL

So I thought right about Kyu xDD

Okay, thanks I think I'm learning things here :D /coughIdon'tlikeSica'svoiceverymuchthocoughbutthisisnotaboutvoicesafterallcough/

LOL

Sica's voice is pretty. <333 I actually get annoyed when people complain about her nasality and I'm like "Your bias is also very nasal, hell, Majority of people in Kpop are nasal" LOL

Well I don't hate her voice either. I actually like it sometimes. I don't know I think it depends on the effort she puts in?

Bitches be acting like Jessica is the only nasal KPOP idol, hell what makes her better than most is that she sometimes has the decency to get rid of it when she feels like it

Like Here

Exactly what I'm talking about. XD

(Common people I even own a Jessica IGAB Album I like her ok?)

hello~

i find kyu's singing beautiful. it touches my heart tbh. yeah he's not particularly lively on stage, but just closing my eyes and listening to him is enough to move me. kyu won the show a couple of times during his short time on is2 too, so even people that don't know him well can be moved by him.

You've never met that many Kyuhyun biased people then~

/leaves

Well I guess I've met two that are now. :D

Opinions I guess, I can't seem to be moved by his voice except for that one song that is on the SM The Ballad album where he sings about his accident (I bawl every time). But apart from that one. >__< Like I said stuff like this is personal preference, you can't say for a fact that Kyuhyun doesn't deliver emotions well cause emotions are something very ambiguous, I just really never met a person who said they were moved by his singing up until now. Whenever I came across the topic with people most of them agreed about him being an outstanding vocalist but most of them also agreed to not being touched by his voice. So...yeah

Elly, I've met many Kyuhyun-biased people though, ELF was like my first Kpop-Fandom. Tho I admit I didn't talk about vocals with all of them. xD Please don't feel personally offended, I love Kyuhyun nevertheless. ;) I like his voice and I know he's a great vocalist, but his delivery of emotions just doesn't do it for me. Thus I love love LOVE him in upbeat songs but when it comes to ballads...meh. And I used to be a Kyuhyun-biased person myself, at one point in time so.  :hehe: It's just that emotionally, Yesung does a lot more with my heartstrings.

That's because people seem to prefer singers who double over when reaching high notes and look like they struggle over effortless singing.

He moves me. His voice is enough, no theatrics needed.

Might be true about other people but not about me. It doesn't even move me when I don't even see him singing, in recordings and such. I don't think there are any visual theatrics in recordings...if visual theatrics is what you're talking about (not really sure).

It's okay though, me not being moved by is voice is subjective (and people really I can't really help it you can't FORCE emotions after all) and not a fact. :)

On a side-note, Onew's my bias and he's not really one of those singers that make big dramatic visual gestures when singing either (more than Kyuhyun probably but not really that much compared to others)... so yeah.

Oh I'm not offended, like at all, everyone is entitled to their opinions. A lot of people like Yesung's singing, myself included. I'm just shocked that you've never met someone who found him emotional, I can count on one hand the people I know that haven't been moved by him. (People who aren't fans included)

I have been tho...once. So you can't really add me to the list of people who have never been moved by him, cause once is not never.  :hehe:
